The Friday Five: Backstreet Boys’ Best Videos

This weekend marks the official start of summer, which means concert season is in full swing!  And we’re seeing the Backstreet Boys on Sunday!  It’s hard to believe BSB have been together for 21 years now, and after all this time they’re still going strong.  And they’re one of the few bands that have never let us down over the years.  We love that they brought back their original music video choreography for tour.  In honor of the In a World Like This Tour, here are our five favorite BSB videos!  (It was extremely hard to not make this a Friday Ten…)

1.  “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)”
This is probably the most iconic boy band video of ALL TIME.  Why are they monsters?  Nobody knows.  But seriously, you haven’t lived until you’ve seen Backstreet Boys perform “Everybody” live, with the entire crowd doing the choreography.   And have you caught the ending of “This Is The End?”  Apparently in heaven everyone knows the “Everybody” dance.

2. “Larger Than Life”
Budgets for music videos were much bigger in the 90s, like in this video when BSB went to outer space.   AJ is also probably the only man on earth who can pull off a mesh cropped top.  (He’s got the abs for it!)   We’re still not sure why they always insist on keeping Nick so under wraps in these videos (first he’s a mummy, now a robot?)

3. “I Want It That Way”
The video has over 98 million views on YouTube for a reason. Another iconic boy band video, which has been spoofed by Blink-182 and paid homage to by Big Time Rush.   We still get chills every time we hear Nick sing The Note.  (You know the one).   And that sad fangirl wave to Brian at the end?  We totally know your pain.

4. “Quit Playing Games With My Heart”
Otherwise known as that video where it starts raining and they dance around and get  their button down shirts and baggy pants soaking wet for no reason.   Howie D just totally takes it off.  Poor Brian had to keep his shirt buttoned because of his scar from heart surgery!  We are full of important 90s trivia facts like this, which we probably learned from TRL, Making the Video or Popup Video.

5. “As Long As You Love Me”
The CHAIR DANCE!  One of our fondest memories of middle school is when all the boys in our class blasted this song from their walkman, and attempted to recreate this chair dance during homeroom.  The key word being attempted.

Bonus. “We’ve Got It Goin’ On”
This might be the best song to dance to, ever.   And their wardrobe is on point.  Layered denim and leather?  Check.  This is also the song with the prayer dance.

Just do yourself a favor and head to the Backstreet Boys Vevo page and hit play all, it’s Friday.   We’ll be rehearsing our choreography for Sunday’s show.

Austin Mahone “The Secret” EP Is Out Now!

When we first heard Austin Mahone’s “Say Something” and
“Say You’re Just A Friend”, we instantly loved his classic pop sound (We’ve never been happier that we actually clicked on an Amazon music suggestion.)  But it was his hit single from last summer, “What About Love,” with its 90s sound and the video’s sweet choreography, that earned him the nickname “the one man boy band.”

Austin Mahone succeeds where others have yet to venture – filling the 90s boy band void in our hearts! (We’re talking real, dancing boy bands)!  His debut EP, “The Secret,” out this week, draws inspiration from and gives more than a few nods to 90s boy bands like *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys.  Songs like “Secret”, “Next To You”, and “Til I Find You” all have those classic throwback elements from the blaring bass in the chorus to the breakdowns that are just begging for a slow lean and pop, *NSYNC style.  If you have Backstreet Boys’ “The Call” stuck in your head after hearing Austin’s EP, we did too.  The (kind of) title track, “Secret” shows off the flashy bass line and synths that sound like an early Backstreet/*NSYNC track that never made the album cut – like that weird *NSYNC song that only got released in Germany.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBbEsEgjVC8

Austin’s slow jams whole-heartedly channel the likes of 98 Degrees and O-Town (who are reuniting by the way).  While every album needs a good love song,  some of these might fall short of a 98 Degrees  “Because Of You”.  Those are big shoes to fill but Mahone took a chance and reached for it, and we have to give him major brownie points for trying!

Watch Austin Mahone perform “Shadow” live on the Today Show!

The Friday Five: Our Favorite Tour Lineups

There is nothing better than seeing your favorite artist on tour.   Except when two or more of your favorites team up – then it’s pretty much guaranteed to fall into the best concert EVER category. Or as NKOTBSB billed it:  One Night.  One Stage.  Once in a Lifetime. (or in our case, 3 times.)  Here are some of our favorite tour lineups!

1.  NKOTBSB (New Kids on the Block & Backstreet Boys)
Basically the greatest tour of all time.   Sure anything with these two acts would be amazing.  But the way the show was arranged, with alternate medleys of songs from each group, kept the audience thrilled from start to finish. And they played every song you’d ever want to hear – just giving the fans what they want.  If you’ve never seen Backstreet Boys perform “Everybody” live, you’re missing out! The choreography, set list, stage, everything about this tour was amazing.  It took everyone back in time , be it 1989 or 1999.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzxMh-hiUKU

2.  The Best of Both Worlds Tour (Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus)
It’s been years and we still aren’t sure how we managed to snag tickets to this one (as we say in our Fangirl Handbook, we refuse to buy resale tickets!)  But we were there, on the floor, and it was even 10 times more awesome than it looked in the 3D movie. We’d seen Jonas Brothers a couple of times before, but this tour was when they really hit their stride and exploded. And this tour was truly a once in a lifetime event.  Especially now that Hannah Montana is dead.

3. The Package Tour (New Kids on the Block, 98 Degrees & Boyz II Men)
We love NKOTB and their boy band posse. They recruited newly reunited 98 degrees and Boyz II Men for the appropriately titled “Package Tour.” Once again, NKOTB nailed the set, stage, choreography, etc. They’re older now, as are their fans, so they’re at a point when everyone can just relax, have fun and have the time of their lives.  It’s a beautiful thing.  We’re so glad NKOTB reunited and are better than ever!

4. Summer Break Tour (Big Time Rush, Victoria Justice, Jackson Guthy & Olivia Somerlyn)
The perfect name for the perfect summer tour.   We’re huge Victoria and BTR fans so we were thrilled to see them team up!  Openers Jackson Guthy and Olivia Somerlyn were fun opening acts who had us singing and dancing along by the third go round.  BTR doesn’t get enough credit for being a legit boy band, and for bringing back the genre. We’re convinced NKOTBSB and all these amazing things wouldn’t have happened without BTR.  These guys are talented singers and dancers and totally bring it each night. It doesn’t hurt that they share a choreographer with NKOTB – boy band master Kevin Maher.  Now if the New Kids could just recruit Big Time Rush for their boy band posse…

5. Matchbox Twenty & Goo Goo Dolls
We’re 90s fan girls so when we heard Matchbox Twenty and Goo Goo Dolls, two of our favorite bands ever, would be touring together we HAD to go. Mostly because if you had told us 15 years ago we would have the chance to go and didn’t, we would have been very upset with ourselves. Luckily we decided to go and it was more than worth it. Both acts played very solid sets including all of their old material.   It was just as great in 2013 as it would have been in 1996. If you are/were a fan of either group, we highly suggest seeing them live at least once.

Nick Carter & Jordan Knight Announce Joint Album & Tour, Nick & Knight!

As we’ve said before, Good Morning America gets all of the important fangirl announcements!  This morning, Nick Carter and Jordan Knight stopped by to drop huge news:  they recorded an album together, Nick & Knight, and are going on tour this fall!

The album will be released on September 2nd.  Pre-orders are up now at NickandKnight.com, and you’ll receive a digital download of their first single “Just The Two of Us” instantly!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1C3UMPlgqkE

We’ve seen collabs from within boybands before (such as Jordan Knight’s “Stingy” feat Donnie Wahlberg), but this is the first cross-boyband duo in history.  Since NKOTBSB was pretty much the greatest thing that has ever happened in the history of boybands, we are beyond thrilled for Nick & Knight!

Tickets go on sale Friday, May 2nd at 10am local time.  And don’t forget NKOTBSB are a close knit bunch – you never know who could stop by your show!  When we saw Jordan Knight in NYC, Donnie Wahlberg & Jonathan Knight stopped by.

Backstreet Boys vs *NSYNC Feud in 2014: Why Can’t We All Get Along?

Back in the late 90s and early aughts, the Backstreet Boys vs *NSYNC feud was a very real thing. Across the world, middle school girls everywhere (OK and elementary, high school and college..) pledged their allegiance to one boy band, and one alone. This was even more serious than choosing a faction in Divergent. Did you prefer JT’s crunchy bleached curls? Or Nick’s platinum bowl cut?   It was one or the other, you couldn’t have both.

We always (not so) secretly loved both bands. If anyone asked it was all about *NSYNC, but we loved Backstreet just as much and still do. I guess you could say that we are Divergent: we are simply not made to love just one boy band. Each group offered something different: where would we be without JC hitting that note in “Bye Bye Bye?”   And Nick in “I Want It That Way?”

We loved *NSYNC’s dance moves and swag (it takes guts to pull off a down vest filled with cash and silver lipstick) and Backstreet Boys harmonies and over the top music videos.

But it’s not 1999 anymore, it’s 2014.  Can’t we all just get along?  There is more than enough boy band love to go around!

You can catch Backstreet Boys on their In a World Like This Tour across North America this summer, as well as Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 World Tour!  And you know we are never giving up hope for that *NSYNC reunion tour…

Be sure to follow *NSYNC, Backstreet Boys and each and every boy band that is your fire and one true desire on Twitter for more updates!

Fangirl Book Club: Out of Sync by Lance Bass

After the *NSYNC reunion at the VMAS (our favorite moment of 2013!) we couldn’t get enough of them. Thanks to YouTube, the Disney *NSYNC special is easily found, as is their Madison Square Garden concert (although we have that one on DVD) and this video which was released only in Europe, “Drive Me Crazy.”

Which led us to finally reading Lance Bass’ memoir, the perfectly titled “Out of Sync.” This book is a must read for any *NSYNC fan, as it reveals much about the boys’ climb to fame, the truth about that Backstreet Boys feud, and how Lance managed to handle screaming girls throwing themselves at him every night (easy: he just wasn’t interested).

Here’s what we learned from reading.

1. The Backstreet Boys vs *NSYNC feud was totally fake and orchestrated by Lou Pearlman, who would make up things to tell each band. (“Chris Kirpatrick said AJ McLean couldn’t sing!”)

2. Lance Bass once ripped up a $100,000 check and walked out of a meeting. Why? They’d had the number one album for weeks and had been touring non stop yet Pearlman was keeping most of the profits for himself as the “sixth member of the band.”

3. Lance went through a LOT of training to go into space. For starters, he had voluntary heart surgery to fix a minor problem. He also spent months learning rocket science in Russia, meaning he had to go through all of his training in Russian. Now, THAT’S dedication!!

4. Unfortunately due to networks pulling out and taking away funding (“it just wouldn’t look good for our sponsors if you died”) and JT’s continual delays of the bands’ reunion as he worked on his solo album, Lance never made it to space. We’re hoping now that space tourism is a thing, he’ll finally get the chance to go!

5. Chris and JT were the biggest ladies men on the road.

6.  Before *NSYNC, JT and JC, who knew each other from the Mickey Mouse Club, were working on a project as a duo when they got a call from Chris Kirkpatrick.  (Can this still happen?)

7.  We can all thank Chris Kirkpatrick for getting rejected from the Backstreet Boys and going on to form *NSYNC.

Grab your copy on Amazon today!  While you impatiently wait for that *NSYNC reunion, be sure to check out Justin Timberlake on tour!

Throwback Thursday: Iconic Late 90s Videos

There is no denying that the 90s are back in a big way this year.  We’ve seen more flannel shirts, Doc Martens, crop tops and floral platform sneakers than we have in years.  We are 90s girls, so the music of this time period will always hold a special place in our hearts, especially the videos we remember watching and calling in to vote for on TRL.  Remember when MTV played music?

Check out our list of the most iconic videos of the late 90s .. Who would you vote for on TRL today?

1.  All the Small Things – Blink 182

2.  I Want it That Way – Backstreet Boys

3. Oops I Did it Again – Britney Spears

4. Give it To You – Jordan Knight

5. Heartbreaker – Mariah Carey feat. Jay Z

6. Bye Bye Bye – *NSYNC

The Fangirl Handbook #2: Meeting the Band

Time for part 2 of The Fangirl Handbook! In part 1, we reviewed the proper concert etiquette. Now let’s discuss how to meet the band! Thanks to social media and companies like VIP Nation, it’s become easier than ever to meet your favorite celebs. Meeting your favorite band or celebrity is something you’ll remember forever – both the good and the bad.  There are two scenarios to the meet and greet:

1. How You Think the Meet & Greet Will Go:
Your favorite band member is so taken by your beauty, wit, and that perfect outfit you planned that they spend hours talking to you as if no one else is in the room.  You get to have a full, intelligent conversation with each member of the band, and then take the perfect meet and greet photo which you can instantly share.

2. What the Meet & Greet is Actually Like:
You are in a line with approximately 500 other people. You overhear a security guard complain that they are running behind. Venue staff are panicking because doors open in 45 minutes and they’ve got to corral thousands of screaming girls into the venue. Instructions are being yelled at you, usually some variation of “no touching, no cell phones, no cameras, no autographs” as you make your way towards that moment you’ve been dreaming of. You can finally see them in the distance! This is your chance! Based on how quickly the line is moving, you calculate you will have about 15 seconds, 20 if you’re lucky. Panic sets in. You’re next! What do you say? His eyes are more beautiful than you remember from the hi-res photos you found on Tumblr. You barely manage to get out a “hello” before you feel yourself being pushed between your least favorite boys. Security yells at you to turn around for your picture, and voila your moment is over. You didn’t even make it down the line to say hi to your favorite!!  Six days go by, and you STILL don’t have that priceless meet and greet photo, which you’re sure by now is a total disaster.

We’ve been lucky enough to meet a few of our favorite bands before, here is some of our advice to make the most of it (for you and everyone else involved).

DOs and DON’Ts of Meeting the Band.

DO:

  • Be polite.
  • Stay calm.
  • Talk to them! You might not get the chance again.
  • Ask for a picture if you can. A picture says 1000 words.
  • Have an idea of what you want to say in advance. Usually you will get just a couple of minutes (even seconds) and having something in mind keeps you from freezing up or worse rambling incoherently at them.
  • Give them a chance to talk too!
  • Thank them! They do not have to be standing around for hours taking pictures and meeting hundreds of people. Not everyone does.
  • Introduce yourself. It may be your FAVORITE BAND MEMBER OF ALL TIME OMG but they are people too. Think of meeting them like you would any other person. This helps with remaining calm.
  • Be nice to them. We shouldn’t have to say this, but you would be surprised.
  • Have your camera ready! You will have very limited time, so don’t waste any digging in your purse for your camera!
  • Be kind to other fans and help each other out! (Again, we shouldn’t have to say this). Remember, we’re all in this together!
  • Follow directions. If security says no hugging, then just don’t do it. They have rules for a reason, whether you like them or not. You don’t want to be that person that gets escorted out.

DON’T:

  • Scream in their face. Would you like a random stranger running up to you screaming in your face? No? Then don’t do it to them.
  • Scream as soon as they enter your line of vision. You are both taking time away from someone else, and scaring the band.
  • Touch them inappropriately. (Yes, we’ve seen this happen.) Just generally don’t touch the talent.  As we were told on TRL however, the talent can (and will) do whatever they want.
  • Jump on them. They see you. They know you are excited. You don’t need to physically attack them to show this.
  • Ask for more than one photo. If your first photo turned out, there is no need to ask for a “selfie!”. Use the extra time to chat with them – you already have 1 photo, enjoy your brief time!
  • Twerk. Ever. Just stop. It’s not cute.
  • Say rude things to them. Don’t like his girlfriend? Keep it to yourself.
  • Bring embarrassing or inappropriate photos for them to sign, or bring up uncomfortable topics. This should be self explanatory. Don’t do it, it’s not funny or cute. It’s just plain rude.
  • Attack them before they’ve gotten out of the car/off stage/etc. Just calm down. They see you. They are more than happy to meet you if you are calm and nice, but will get scared if you suddenly jump on them and start twerking and asking for selfies.
  • Push/shove other fans out of the way, or use people’s heads as a tripod. Once the pushing starts, they will get scared and leave…as would any sane person. And you’re ruining the experience for someone else.

We hope this list of Do’s and Don’ts help prepare you for the next time you get the chance to see your favorite boy band on tour! Check out VIP Nation for upcoming tour info.

Backstreet Boys Announce Summer 2014 North American Tour on GMA

We’re so glad we made the switch from The Today Show to Good Morning America recently – GMA seems to get all of the important fangirl announcements.  Like this morning, when Backstreet Boys revealed they will be heading back out on a North American tour this summer!   We were getting majorly concerned that it was already March and we had no boyband tours to look forward to this year (We even made a list of forgotten bands who could reunite) so we are so excited that Backstreet’s Back in 2014!  This will be their second North American tour since Kevin Richardson rejoined the group last year, just in time for BSB’s 20th Anniversary.   Avril Lavigne will be joining the tour as well, so get ready for a night of early 2000s nostalgia.

Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, March 21st 2014 at 10am local time.  Be sure to visit BackstreetBoys.com for info about fan club pre-sales, VIP packages, upgrades and after parties!
