2014 Albums Of The Year

Taylor Swift wrote an outstanding piece in the Wall Street Journal over the summer about the future of music, where she wrote that “people are only buying [albums] that hit them like an arrow through the heart or have made them feel strong or allowed them to feel like they really aren’t alone in feeling so alone.”  We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.  Here are the albums in 2014 that hit us like an arrow through the heart.

1. Dan + Shay – “Where It All Began”
It’s rare and special to find an album where you listen to each and every song, and can sing along to from start to finish.  This album was by far our most played of the year, and the soundtrack to our 2014.  We’ll be able to look back at this year as “where it all began” for Dan + Shay, who have a very, very bright future ahead of them.  We can’t wait to see what’s next for the talented duo, starting with their 2nd major headlining tour in 2015.

2. Sam Hunt – “Montevallo”
We were lucky to have downloaded a copy of the “Behind The Pines” mixtape before Sam exploded over the summer with the release of his hit single “Leave The Night On.”  He released his full length debut, “Montevallo,” in October, opening at the top of the country charts, and third overall.  Sam’s unique style makes us excited about music.  His blend of a 90s R&B sound with country storytelling blends perfectly with Sam’s southern drawl, deep voice, and spoken lyrics.  He’ll be selling out arenas one day.

3. Hunter Hayes – “Storyline”
A sophomore album is always tricky, especially when your debut was nominated for a Grammy and countless other awards.  But Hunter managed to knock it out of the park.    The album is a more collaborative effort than his first, on which he played every single instrument.  Hunter’s music grabs you from the first listen.  We love how Hunter brings this album to life on tour, with unique arrangements for each song.   He’s the rare musician who makes his live show a full experience that stays with you long after the show.

4. The Strypes – “Snapshot”
“Snapshot” is another debut album that immediately got our attention and made us wonder where The Strypes had been all our lives.  Evidently they’d been honing their skills at pubs across their native Ireland, where they learned to play loud, fast aggressive, and just damn good old fashioned rhythm and blues.  And they’re all still in their teens.  There are no filler songs on the album – it’s solid from start to finish.  If you ever have the opportunity to see The Strypes live, don’t miss it.  Seeing the album come to life on stage was one of our favorite moments of the year.

5. Austin Mahone – “Secret”
Technically this is an EP, but at 8 tracks, it’s *almost* an album.  We fell for Austin’s sound with tracks like “What About Love” and “Banga Banga,” but this EP, with it’s 90s pop influences, cemented Austin’s status as the one man boyband.  We’re obsessed with the Britney and *NSYNC-esque slow breakdown in the title track, “Secret,” and couldn’t stop listening to “Next To You” on repeat for days.  Austin’s working on his much awaited full length debut with the legendary Max Martin (who wrote basically every great 90s pop song you can think of), and we can’t wait for more!

6. Jesse McCartney – “In Technicolor”
Possibly the most underrated album on this list.  His newest single, “Punch Drunk Recreation,” is a pop masterpiece.  Armed with a Justin Timberlake sound, and retro look, JMAC outdid himself with this album.  “In Technicolor” is one of those albums that will always be in style.

7. Nick & Knight – “Nick & Knight”
We admit that we’ll probably love anything that involves our favorite boybands – especially when two of our favorite members team up.   But Nick Carter and Jordan Knight’s album is a fun R&B/pop album worth checking out.

8. 5SOS – “5SOS”
It’s a safe bet that 5SOS are going to be extremely monumental in bringing pop punk back to a radio station near you!  We’ve had the band’s debut album on heavy rotation, and we don’t think we’ll stop playing it any time soon.  Also, can people please stop referring to them as a “boyband?”  These guys have the heart, drive, and sound to be restore Warped Tour to the glory days of 2006.

9. The Vamps – “Meet The Vamps”
While we had to wait for this album to be officially released in the United States, it was worth the wait!  The Vamps have an acoustic pop sound that makes you want to dance around your living room singing at the top of your lungs.

10. Walk The Moon – “Talking Is Hard”
With it’s December release, Walk The Moon’s sophomore album “Talking Is Hard” barely made our list.  The Ohio band celebrated by live tweeting with fans the first listen of the album, divulging secrets like “there’s a mess up in this part of the song” to “the weird lyrics are from this member!”  Walk The Moon are taking the album on a full headlining tour in the spring.  It’s not too late to hop on the dance jam bandwagon.

Nick & Knight Live At The Best Buy Theater in NYC

Nick Carter and Jordan Knight brought their duet project, Nick & Knight, to the Best Buy Theater in New York City on Friday night and it was everything we could have imagined and more for two boy band members teaming up for an album and tour.

During the concert, Jordan kept picking on Nick for being a trooper and powering through the concert even though Nick had almost lost his voice and was having a hard time singing.  That didn’t slow down his dance moves though, which he showcased in their terrific 90s medley mid-concert.  We might be biased but the best part of the concert might have been that cover of Ginuwine’s “Pony” that had the audience screaming with delight – like it was 1996 all over again! Watch their 90s medley below, which on its own is worth the price of admission.

Nick and Jordan slowed things down a little when they broke out an acoustic guitar and keyboard to sing one of the most heartfelt songs on the album – “Halfway There.”  Making sure to give their larger than life fans the right stuff, Nick and Jordan also covered their boy band hits “I Want It That Way” and “Step By Step.”

While we’re sad Jordan didn’t sing “Stingy” (Donnie was busy filming his TV show on Friday night), the sold out audience was treated to “Give It To You” and “Larger Than Life” featuring Nick Carter on the electric guitar.

Nick & Knight Celebrate Album Release at Highline Ballroom

Backstreet Boys’ resident heartthrob and newlywed Nick Carter and New Kids On The Block’s Jordan Knight had so much fun on the NKOTBSB tour they decided to team up and keep the party going.  Nick & Knight are teaming up for an album and tour this fall. The duo celebrated the release of their debut album with a party at Highline Ballroom in NYC.

Nick and Jordan performed quite a few  songs from the album including “Switch”, “Halfway There” (with Jordan on piano) and  “Deja Vu” which was co-written by Brandyn Burnette!  They also took questions from the fans, revealing more about their upcoming tour. (Trust us, it sounds amazing!)  Jonathan Knight came out to support his brother and even mingled with the crowd, taking selfies with everyone.  Nick brought out his own laptop and did double-duty, showing off his DJ skills during the release party.

Nick and Jordan even previewed some choreography they’ve been working on for the tour! Watch a live performance of “Switch” below! (The track, one of our favorites on the album, was co-written by Bruno Mars)

They said they will play solo material for the Nick & Knight tour later this fall and topped the evening off with Jordan performing “Give It To You.”  We are still fangirling over this, because this was our JAM in 1999, and we voted for it on “TRL” almost daily.

The Friday Five: Nick & Knight’s Greatest Hits

In case you haven’t heard, Nick & Knight’s debut album will be released next week!  The album, out September 2nd, is a collaboration between all time boy band greats Nick Carter and Jordan Knight.   In celebration of the album, here’s a look at our favorite Nick & Knight songs and collaborations.  If you’re in NYC, you can celebrate the album release with Nick & Knight at Highline Ballroom!  Get more info here.  You can pre-order Nick & Knight’s album on iTunes now!

1.  Jordan Knight – “Give It To You”
Jordan’s first solo hit was a smash on TRL back in the day, although looking back we probably shouldn’t have been singing this song.  Oh well.  It was co-written by Robin Thicke, so it all makes sense now.

2. Jordan Knight featuring Donnie Wahlberg – “Stingy”
Nick & Knight’s album isn’t the first time he’s teamed up with a fellow boy band member.  We love this collaboration between Jordan & Donnie.

3. Nick Carter – “Just One Kiss”
While Nick’s solo career never reached the height of Jordan’s, he did release his 2nd solo album in 2011, including this catchy lead single.

4. NKOTBSB – “Don’t Turn Out The Lights”
The start of the Carter-Knight bro-mance began in 2010 when the supergroup, NKOTBSB was formed, AKA the greatest thing to happen in boy band history.

5. Nick & Knight – “One More Time”
And the second greatest thing to happen in boy band history: the first single released by the duo!  We can’t wait to see them on tour this fall.  Check out all the dates here!

Nick Carter & Jordan Knight Announce Joint Album & Tour, Nick & Knight!

As we’ve said before, Good Morning America gets all of the important fangirl announcements!  This morning, Nick Carter and Jordan Knight stopped by to drop huge news:  they recorded an album together, Nick & Knight, and are going on tour this fall!

The album will be released on September 2nd.  Pre-orders are up now at NickandKnight.com, and you’ll receive a digital download of their first single “Just The Two of Us” instantly!

We’ve seen collabs from within boybands before (such as Jordan Knight’s “Stingy” feat Donnie Wahlberg), but this is the first cross-boyband duo in history.  Since NKOTBSB was pretty much the greatest thing that has ever happened in the history of boybands, we are beyond thrilled for Nick & Knight!

Tickets go on sale Friday, May 2nd at 10am local time.  And don’t forget NKOTBSB are a close knit bunch – you never know who could stop by your show!  When we saw Jordan Knight in NYC, Donnie Wahlberg & Jonathan Knight stopped by.
