With the release of 5 Seconds Of Summer’s debut album in the US, we’ve had a whole lot of pop punk on heavy rotation in the Fangirls office. Drums that pack a punch, whining guitars in the solo and breakdown, vocals that are hardly polished, and lyrics that you cling to when your parents say you can’t dye your one sided buzz cut leopard print. They just don’t understand you! But these classic pop punk bands sure do. One of us was part of the main target audience for this golden era of pop punk (or “mall rock” as some like to classify it) and it’s a genre that still heavily influences musicians all around the world whether they admit it or realize it. Without further adieu, we bring you this week’s Friday Five: Influential Pop Punk Bands
Good Charlotte – “Girls & Boys” Hailing from Maryland, Good Charlotte were the darlings of TRL for a short period. They brought pop punk to the masses and are generally written off for being “too mainstream” but they were just plain good at writing catchy songs. The hand claps are still one of our favorite parts of this song.
Blink-182 – “What’s My Age Again?” No matter where your music genre loyalties lie, we’re pretty certain that you can still sing the words to this without them in front of you. And it’s probably a safe bet that this video is the reason your parents outlawed MTV in your house. Blink-182 confirmed that they are working on a new album while Mark Hoppus tends to his personal farm in London (we don’t understand it either – he’s too pop punk for us.) What’s his age again?
Sugarcult – “Memory” Aahhh! Melodic pop punk at it’s finest. Sugarcult have made it onto our list of “albums we probably couldn’t live without” and this song was the reason we picked up the album in the first place. If only pop punk could sound like this again…we’d be in 7th heaven!
Green Day – “BasketCase” If you’re not familiar with Green Day, where have you been for the last 25 years?! They don’t quite appeal to the parents and their fans are still OK with it. Green Day made arguably some of the most timeless pop punk albums that bands still try to emulate to this day!
American Hi-Fi – “The Art Of Losing” Some fans may remember this song being in the Lindsay Lohan remake of “Freaky Friday” but pop punk enthusiasts will argue this song was really influential in the genre. The drumsticks rapping on the edge of the kit make this song stand out and if you’re playing “Guess This Song” – it shouldn’t be too difficult to recognize this one classic right off the bat! “The Art Of Losing” has the elements that make a great pop punk song – gang vocals in the chorus, lyrics about not fitting in, and the guitars really chugging along punch this song into overdrive.
We’d be totally lying if we said we weren’t still confused by the Jonas Brothers breakup, but we have moved on to the “acceptance” phase of this traumatic event. We hoped that Nick and Joe would at least still work on their solo music post-breakup. Nick Jonas & The Administration is one of our favorite under-appreciated albums of all time (if you’re commanding Prince’s band at the age of 17…nothing but respect). And as great as “Love Slayer” was, we’re still hoping to hear some of the “weird music he wrote with Robert Schwartzman” that Joe mentioned in his NY Magazine tell-all.
We’re thrilled that Nick Jonas has signed to Island Records and released his first post-breakup single as a solo artist! Nick J really is off the chain in this new single. Listen to the track, “Chains,” below!
It’s definitely a departure from his work with the Administration, but it sounds a lot like the Jonas Brothers tracks we heard off of their unreleased album, “V,” on tour last summer. By the way, we love how Nick just dropped his single. No months of hype, no constant tweeting of the word “soon.” Just music.

In case you were still sleeping from the previous couple days of trying to find foreign boys in bands around NYC, The Vamps performed on The Today Show and absolutely smashed it! Just days before they kick off their US headlining tour, Rixton released their second single, “Wait On Me!” We love Rixton’s Maroon 5 and Rob Thomas influenced sound, which is just as strong here as in their debut “Me and My Broken Heart.” Listen to the track below!
The Broken Heart Tour kicks off on July 30th at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston. Check out all of the dates here! Pickup a copy of the Broken Heart EP and Wait On Me on iTunes now!
When it came time for Long Island pop punk band Patent Pending to make a video for their hit single “Hey Mario” they decided to take the Rainbow Road less traveled. The band figured – why not form a fake band and make a documentary showcasing the rise and fall of said fake band, Spinal Tap style. Thus “Mario & The Brick Breakers” came to be. Not being a band to do anything half way, they even created a “Mario & The Brick Breakers: Greatest Hits EP” to go along with the 30 minute documentary that will be broken up into 5 separate videos. Watch the “Mario & The Brick Breakers” documentary trailer below!
One reason we love Patent Pending is how into everything they get. Each band member showed some serious commitment in really becoming their Smash Bros. character!
You can get a copy of Mario & The Brick Breakers Greatest Hits EP using the links below. Help get the album to the top of the charts!

They have a few more dates on the “American Meltdown Tour” before they open for MKTO at Irving Plaza in August. The band are also heading over to the UK for their special “Brighter UK” Tour this October. Grab your tickets HERE before they completely sell out!
Tuesday was an awesome day to be a 5SOS fan: the Aussie band’s debut album FINALLY got released in the US! AND they had a rockin’ performance on The Today Show! Ashton, Michael, Luke, and Calum were full of energy and they definitely showed the Today Show that they’re not just a teen sensation – they are talented musicians. Rockefeller Center was packed with 5SOS fans in one of the largests Today Show crowds we’ve ever seen! Someone even brought out a giant Will Smith face for the occasion that didn’t go unnoticed by the guys.
5 Seconds Of Summer performed three fan favorites on the TODAY Show! Watch the videos for each below!
The band’s US album debut is something that is going to bring back the pop-punk to the youth of America. It’s exactly the right blend of Maryland’s own All Time Low and Good Charlotte, and the UK’s McFly and Busted.
If you’re reading this, you probably don’t need to be reminded but you can get 5SOS’s debut album on iTunes now! Or head to Target and get their exclusive edition in your favorite color (Or all 4. We don’t judge).
