The Friday Five: Best Concerts of 2014

We definitely shattered our record for most concerts attended in a single year in 2014.  While we loved each and every show, and it was nearly impossible to narrow it down to 5 favorites, here are the ones that stood out.

1. Hunter Hayes – 24 Hour Road Race – Palace Theatre – Stamford, CT
We ended up seeing Hunter more than any other artist this year – 7 times in total.  Impressive, considering on his past tours he came nowhere near NYC so we had no hopes of attending.  Hunter, if you’re reading this, please keep coming to New York.  We love you.  Of all the shows, among them the We Are Not Invisible Tour, Tattoo (Your Name) Tour, Arthur Ashe Kids Day, and so on, the most memorable was definitely the 24 Hour Road Race.  True, it was a short concert, but the record-breaking goal gave an added level of excitement, and now we can officially say we were part a Guinness World Record.  Oh, but we can’t forget that time he performed “Storm Warning” right in front of us…

2. Austin Mahone – MTV Artist To Watch Tour – Hammerstein Ballroom – New York, NY
We also had a hard time deciding which Austin show to pick, but this show wins since it was Austin’s first big headlining tour.  This show earned him his nickname of the “one man boyband,” due to his on point choreography.  We don’t have many videos of Austin performing, because it’s literally impossible to not dance along, but we managed to get one at his Mets Post-game concert later in the year.

3. Dan + Shay – Where It All Began Tour – Highline Ballroom – New York, NY
“Where It All Began” is hands down our favorite album of 2014.  While we saw Dan + Shay for the first time on the We Are Not Invisible Tour with Hunter Hayes, this was our first time seeing them play with a full band.  We were blown away by how passionate and talented they are, and how much they genuinely love performing.  Dan + Shay are so much fun to see live (seriously, the entire audience sings every word), and they make it special every time we see them.  We can’t wait for their next headlining tour in 2015!

4. 5SOS – Stars, Stripes & Maple Syrup Tour – Best Buy Theater – New York, NY
This might get the prize for one of the hottest concerts of 2014.  We were shocked when we scored a pair of tickets to this show! It had been such a long time since we went to a “pop punk” show that this finally made us remember why we fell in love.  5SOS have such great energy and they put on an incredible show to the sold out crowd.  Calum, Luke, Ashton, and Michael owned the stage and had everyone singing along to every word, even though the band had yet to release their album in the US.

5. The Strypes – Music Hall of Williamsburg – Brooklyn, NY
Whenever we write about The Strypes, we feel like nothing can do justice to how insanely talented and incredible these guys are.  All four members hail from Ireland and are under the age of 20, yet they play some serious rhythm and blues.  We had never really seen grown men fangirl until this concert.  That’s how good these guys are.  We were floored by their musicianship, and some absolutely insane harmonica solos.

Bonus: 106.1 BLI’s Summer Jam – Nikon Jones Beach Theater – Wantagh, NY
This gets the runner up place because of it’s awesome lineup: Austin Mahone, Cody Simpson, New Hollow, Midnight Red, AJR, and so on. Summer Jam definitely had something for everyone! The number of acts and the variety contributed to the “festival” feeling of this show, along with bonding with the people sitting around you for the entire day.  We hope Summer Jam will be back next year!

Dan + Shay’s Where It All Began Tour Hits NYC & Philly

Country duo Dan + Shay just wrapped up their first headlining tour, which included a sold-out show at NYC’s Highline Ballroom.  That’s right – a sold out country show in Chelsea.  We’ve been counting down the days to this show since we first found out about it in May, and they did not disappoint.  We can’t say enough good things about them – not only are they talented musicians and performers, they are also extremely kind and generous to their fans.  Luckily we planned to see them again in Philly the next night, and they were just as amazing the second time around!

P1030161

The “Where It All Began” tour is in support of their record breaking debut album of the same name, one of our favorites of the year.  Dan + Shay played every song off the album, and the enthusiastic crowd sang along to every word. (You know when some artists are like “now you sing!” and it’s just incoherent mumbling / crickets?  Yeah, that doesn’t happen at a Dan + Shay concert.)  They also let us know that they’ve been working on new music, and played a more recent track, “Partner In Crime.” They did a special unplugged version of “Can’t Say No,” sitting on the edge of the stage like one big campfire singalong.

Their set also included covers of Def Leopard’s “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” 5SOS “She Looks So Perfect,” and Taio Cruz’s “Dynamite,” proving that they’re just as comfortable playing rock, pop-punk, even hip-hop, as they are country. We’re sure they would have found success in any genre they chose. (Although we’re sure glad they chose country!)

Dan + Shay are one of a few artists that really leave it all on the stage, night after night.  Shay Mooney has such an incredible voice and range, and his harmonies with Dan Smyers repeatedly gave us chills. One of the things that struck us the most is that you can feel how much they truly love being on stage and performing.  Their genuine excitement and passion is infectious, spreading through the entire crowd.   You can see how much it means to them to have people singing along to their songs, even to their hit first single “19 You + Me,” it’s still the greatest feeling in the world.

Opening act Cam is definitely one to watch – her fun set got the crowd pumped up, as she sang about everything from Fireball Whisky to real country style ( after all, “Country Ain’t Never Been Pretty!”)  One of our favorite songs was one she described as what she sings to herself in the mirror to pump herself up – “Go Get ‘Em, Cam.”

Austin Mahone Mets Post-Game Concert 9/27

The New York Mets couldn’t have picked a better night for the final show of their concert series.  It was a perfect late September night that kicked off with hundreds of young dance and cheer squads from the tri-state area doing a fun routine to songs by Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande.  Dance Cheer Night meant there were significantly more teenage girls than usual in the stadium – oh, and the fact that Austin Mahone was performing after the game!  Between the cheerleaders and the fangirls in attendance, it’s safe to say that it was one of the loudest crowds Citi Field has ever seen (especially whenever Austin Mahone showed up on the big screen).

P1010768 copyAfter the game (which the Mets ended up winning 2-1 in the 9th!), a stage was quickly rolled out behind 2nd base for the concert, which started just after 10:30pm.   Austin performed a 12-song set, including an acoustic section that showcased his vocals and guitar playing.   And we all know he can dance!   The one man boy band showed off his smooth choreography to hits like “Banga Banga” and his latest, “Secret,” which sounds like a 2014 update of a 90s Backstreet Boys song (and is the Secret Fangirls theme song).  Austin even invited 1 lucky fan on stage to serenade during “U.”   We always knew he was a great dancer, but this was the first time we got to see his choreography up close, and we were majorly impressed.

We can’t wait to see who the Mets will have in the lineup for the 2015 concert series!   Besides Austin, recent shows have included Boyz II Men and Third Eye Blind.  It’s a fun way to see your favorite artist, and to spend a perfect summer evening with some baseball, music and BBQ (or Shake Shack, or a burger…the food options at Citi Field are endless).

Austin Mahone & The Vamps Summer Tour Stops at the Izod Center

We were lucky to catch The Vamps at their first headlining show ever back at The Grammercy Theatre in NYC in February, and at their MTV Artist to Watch show earlier this summer.  So it was amazing to see how far they’ve come in such a short time, and to see them play in an arena setting. (And up next: a stadium!)   The Vamps played all of their singles, as well as their fun covers of Jason Derulo’s “Trumpets” and “Cecilia.”  We loved seeing all of the support The Vamps had in the arena – nearly everyone was singing and dancing along during their set.  Impressive for a band that’s relatively new to the US, but they’ve  had great success here so far.  Their “Somebody To You” EP was released earlier this month and debuted in the Top 10 on Billboard.  Pickup a copy on iTunes now!

The Vamps Setlist
1. “Wild Heart”
2. “Last Night”
3. “Trumpets”
4. “Somebody To You”
5. “Can We Dance?”
6. “Cecilia”

IMG_2695Austin, Austin, Austin.  What can we say?  He just gets better and better each time we see him.  His dance moves are so smooth and flawless, and the choreography is always on point.   We love how he interacts with his dancers, another reason why we call him the “one man boyband.”  We imagine this is what it would have been like to see a 90s boyband back in the day.  And we thank him for that.  The concert was a non-stop dance party, for us anyway.  (Yes that was us doing the choreography to “Banga Banga,” “Shawty Shawty,” and “What About Love.”)

IMG_2709
Of course Austin is more than just 90s-era slow breakdowns and perfect slow leans that would make any *NSYNC fan cry.  He can sing, too.  And play the guitar, which he showcased in an acoustic set that included covers of George Strait’s “Check Yes Or No” and John Legend’s “All Of Me.”   Too add to our boyband nostalgia, Austin put on a pair of ripped jeans that would have made Donnie Wahlberg proud.  Our only complaint?  We miss those leather tanktops Austin usually breaks out for tour…

There are still a few dates left on the tour, check out all of the dates here!   Be sure to pickup a copy of “The Secret” EP so you can sing along during the show!  Our personal favorites are “Secret” and “Next To You.”

MKTO’s American Dream Tour Hits NYC

We caught the American Dream Tour last week when it hit Irving Plaza in NYC.  It was an awesome lineup already, with Tiffany Houghton and Action Item opening for MKTO.  But we were even more excited when an old favorite, Patent Pending, was added to the New York show!

We unfortunately only got to see the tail end of Patent Pending’s set, but their energetic live show and infectious energy had the entire crowd pumped up.  Check out their latest project, Mario & The Brick Breakers.

Tiffany Houghton was up next!  We discovered Tiffany when she followed us on Twitter one day, and we’re so glad she did!  We instantly fell in love with her pop country sound and fun style.  Her live performance did not disappoint.  Tiffany is a perfect blend of sweet and sassy, just like her new single “The Best.”  Of course our favorite moment of her set came when she sang “Band Boy,” complete with a cover of 5SOS’ “She Looks So Perfect.”  She certainly won over all of the fan girls in the audience (she’s one of us!)  Watch her performance below.

We were majorly impressed with MKTO, especially as Tony Oller has been dealing with laryngitis. (They had to reschedule their Philly stop!)  He still sounded great – if he hadn’t tweeted about it, we would have had no idea!  What a trooper.  Tony and Malcolm did an outstanding cover of Nico & Vinz’s “Am I Wrong.”

IMG_2599
They played most of their debut album, including tracks like “Heartbreak Holiday,” “Forever Until Tomorrow,” “Thank You,” and of course their summer hit “Classic.”

If you can make it to the American Dream Tour, go!!!  There are a few shows left before the tour wraps up in Chicago next week.    MKTO will also be back in NYC for the US Open Arthur Ashe Kids Day on August 23rd with Hunter Hayes & The Vamps!  Get more info HERE!

MTV Artist to Watch: The Vamps at Highline Ballroom in NYC!

British band The Vamps (yes band, NOT a boy band) played to a sold out crowd at NYC’s Highline Ballroom on Sunday.  The show was part of the MTV Artist to Watch Series, which has recently featured artists such as Austin Mahone and Hunter Hayes.   We were thrilled to have the chance to see them again!   This wasn’t their first time playing in NYC:  Back in February, they played the Gramercy Theatre with AJR.  Since then, The Vamps released their debut album “Meet The Vamps,” which has been as high as #2 on the charts in the UK, and have been all over the world in support of their album.

IMG_2390
The quartet, Bradley Simpson (lead vocals, guitar), James McVey (lead guitar), Connor Ball (bass) and Tristan Evans (drums) really mesh well together considering they found each other via social media about 3 years ago!  Each member has their own unique style and musical taste (James for example is a fan of country stars like Dan + Shay), yet the music The Vamps create is pure, catchy pop rock at its best.  The band’s musicianship, harmonies, and talent show that  this group is more than just another band creating a frenzy among teenage girls.

IMG_2384
Their high energy performance had the crowd dancing from start to finish!  The Vamps’ set featured all of their singles, including the latest “Somebody To You,” and the first song the band ever wrote together, “She Was The One.”  The crowd was singing along to every word, which is impressive for a band whose album hasn’t even been released in the US yet!    They have a great stage presence, interacting with each other and also with the lucky fans in the front row!

IMG_2395

The Vamps also performed solid covers of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside,” Simon and Garfunkel’s “Cecilia,” and a fun, rock version of Jason Derulo’s “Trumpet.”   When the crowd started chanting “take it off,” Tristan turned it into a jam session showcasing all of their musical talents, as Brad told the audience “let’s make some music together!”   If you haven’t met The Vamps yet, get ready:  they are most definitely the Artist to Watch in 2014!

Setlist:

Somebody To You
She Was The One

If you’re in NYC, you can meet The Vamps and catch an acoustic set at Planet Hollywood tonight!  If not, be sure to tune into their livestream at 6PM today…they’ll be making a big announcement you don’t want to miss!

The Vamps will be touring the US with Austin Mahone all summer long!  Check out the dates here and get a copy of “Wild Heart” on iTunes!

106.1 BLI Summer Jam Takes Over Jones Beach!

June 1st marked the official start of our summer concert season with 106.1 BLI’s Summer Jam held at the Nikon Jones Beach Theater! The nearly 7 hour music festival featured a range of artists from Jason Derulo to Karmin, and  Fifth Harmony to Cash Cash. We were most excited to see secretfangirls.com favorites Austin Mahone, Cody Simpson, Midnight Red, and AJR! We also discovered a new favorite artist to watch, New Hollow.

midnight red summer jamMidnight Red
America’s boy band Midnight Red kicked off the festival with their cover of Rihanna’s “Diamonds” and heated up the stage with their hits “Hell Yeah” and “Take Me Home,” complete with choreographed dance moves.  (We highly approve!).  Behind the guys were giant inflatable caricatures of each member.

New Hollow
New Hollow won us over instantly with their rocking cover of David Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel” – no easy task. Their original tracks like “She Ain’t You” have a 90s grunge sound and since we love anything and everything 90s around here, we may have found our new favorite band. They were the only artist on the lineup that we weren’t familiar with before the show and we’re so glad we caught their set!

ajr_summerjam
AJR
NYC-based indie pop band AJR played their biggest show to date to the crowd of nearly 15,000. We weren’t sure how their music would translate in a stadium setting, but they looked and sounded amazing as always. We love how unique AJR’s sound is – out of the 13 acts that performed, they had by far the most distinctive and original sound.  We’re sure they gained a lot of fans – the whole venue was clapping along to “I’m Ready!” We also love how they still set up their own equipment.  And did anyone catch the “I’m Ready” banner flying around the stadium?  They’re total rock stars now!

codysimpson_summerjam
Cody Simpson
We’ve been fans of Cody Simpson since we saw him opening for Big Time Rush at Jones Beach on their summer tour. His laid back Australian surfer vibe and sound are perfect for the venue (which if you haven’t been to, is surrounded by water on 3 sides). While we were expecting him to dance more, especially following his stint on “Dancing With The Stars,” we were pleasantly surprised to see his guitar playing skills showcased instead as he played both acoustic and electric during his set, which included his new single, “Surfboard“.   The crowd went wild for Cody and we’re hoping he’ll be back on another headlining tour soon! He’s heading off to Europe this week for his Acoustic Sessions tour.

austinmahone_summerjam
Austin Mahone
Of course the highlight of the evening was Austin MAHONE, who kicked off his set with a Banga Banga!  We’re still fangirling over the fact that he played “Secrets” (our theme song) and “Next To You” from his new EP, “The Secret”.  From Austin’s crisp boy band dance moves to his flawless vocals, it’s safe to say everyone at Jones Beach last night became a Mahomie!  Austin also showed he’s multi-talented, breaking out the acoustic guitar for “Shadow.”  He kept teasing the crowd with “one more song!” which thankfully turned into 4 more songs, including “MMM Yeah” and “What About Love.”    We’re even more excited for his summer tour with The Vamps, because we just didn’t get enough Austin last night!

BLI says they’re hoping to bring Summer Jam back in 2015, to which we say “YES PLEASE!!” Except, can we maybe have it on a Saturday next year?

Dan + Shay + You Acoustic Session!

It’s no secret that one of our favorite new artists is Dan + Shay.  Their debut album, “Where It All Began,”  was released last month, and we’ve been playing it nonstop!  So we were thrilled to finally see them live on the “We’re Not Invisible Tour” with Hunter Hayes!  Before they opened the show for thousands of people, Dan + Shay had a small, acoustic set backstage for around 30 people.

The acoustic session was one of the most unique artist experiences we’ve ever had.  The intimate gathering allowed for the duo, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, to interact and connect with their fans on a more personal level.   Their acoustic-driven sound was perfect for the up-close setting.  And gave us a reason to just have one big sing along to songs off their album that they wouldn’t be playing in their set later that evening, like “Party Girl”

Dan + Shay also played a new song, “Sway,” for the first time ever!  They said the song could be on their “next album,” but we are already loving it!  We found ourselves swaying (pun intended) and singing along the first time we heard it.    Shay’s voice gives us chills.  Check it out below!

Following the acoustic set, Dan + Shay were first to open the We’re Not Invisible Tour.  They opened with our favorite song, “What You Do To Me,” and closed with their new single, “Show You Off,” which just was just added to country radio.  We’re even bigger fans of Dan + Shay than before, and can’t wait to see them again!  Not only is this duo extremely talented, they are also funny, gracious and sweeter than sweet tea on a hot summer day.

Check out all of their upcoming tour dates here!  Visit Dan+Shay.com for more details on the Dan + Shay + You experience.

5SOS & Jackson Guthy Bring The Stars Stripes and Maple Syrup Tour to NYC!

We caught Aussie band (NOT boy band) 5SOS’ first North American headlining tour when they stopped in NYC this week!  We were just as excited to see opener Jackson Guthy, whom we loved on the Summer Break Tour with Big Time Rush last year.  He played several new songs including his new single, “Young and Single.”  Jackson does a great job of getting the crowd pumped up with his catchy songs and energetic performance.

It’s clear that 5S0S draw a lot of their inspiration from early 2000s pop-punk and add their own twist on it.  The Australian band powered through their set like old pros playing old favorites like “Don’t Stop” and new releases from their EP like “Heartache On The Big Screen”.  It was almost like watching All Time Low and Blink-182’s love child on stage!  Everything from the onstage banter, to the antics to move from stage right to stage left, and even the dueling guitars between Luke and Michael had us wishing we could turn back time to Warped Tour 2007-2008.

IMG_2088
As the band slowed things down (not by much) with their song “Beside You”, the crowd responded with raising paper hearts in the air and signs reading “the city that never sleeps” with the NYC skyline on them.  Lead singer, Luke Hemmings commented mid song how cool the crowd looked from stage and we totally agree.  It’s amazing to see just how much social media has impacted music and concerts today, as hundreds of fans in the audience held up their hearts.

The sold out crowd was extremely enthusiastic, and we noticed a LOT of items being thrown on stage at the band.  Clearly some people haven’t read our Fangirl Handbook for the proper concert etiquette!  (Rule #1:  Don’t throw things at the band.)

IMG_2096
5 Seconds Of Summer are sure to get the respect they deserve with the support and friendship of fellow pop-punk artists, All Time Low.  Alex Gaskarth co-wrote a song called “Disconnected” with 5SOS for the US Tour Edition of the “She Looks So Perfect EP”.  The song definitely sounds like an outtake from an earlier ATL album (hey, we’re not complaining!) and we can hear the ATL influences in their track “Lost Boy.”

If you get the chance to see 5SOS on tour, and you love to feel nostalgic for early-mid 2000’s pop-punk – hop on that bandwagon before it gets too full!

Watch 5 Seconds Of Summer perform “She Looks So Perfect” live at the Best Buy Theater in New York City from last night!

Check out the set list below from PupFresh!

“18”
“Out of My Limit”
“Voo Doo Doll”
“Don’t Stop”
“Heartache on the Big Screen”
“Lost Boy”
“Amnesia”
“Beside You”
“Disconnected”
“Heartbreak Girl”
“Teenage Dream”
“What I Like About You”
“Good Girls Are Bad Girls”
“She Looks So Perfect”
“Try Hard”

AJR Kicks off Spring Tour with Headlining Show at Gramercy Theatre

Our favorite band of brothers, AJR, kicked off their spring tour with a headlining show at NYC’s Gramercy Theatre on Saturday, March 15th.  It’s hard to believe this was only the band’s second headlining show, ever.  They played a solid 1-hour set, including a brand new song and some covers that seriously showed off their vocal ranges.

We were first introduced to AJR (brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met) at CMJ back in October, when they played a showcase at the Gramercy along with artists like Diane Birch.  At the time, there were maybe 30 people in the audience.  It’s amazing to see how far they’ve come in just a few short months!

AJR Gramercy Theatre 15March2014 photo by Alyloveyx 2

The near-capacity crowd at Gramercy was dancing and singing along to every song, even tracks like “The Green and the Town” and “Married on a Hill,” which haven’t even been officially released by the band.  The show also marked the first performance of a new song, “Alice By The Hudson,” which AJR described as “the perfect summer song.”  We totally agree, and love the Beach Boys-influence you can hear in this song.   They also played favorites off their debut EP, 6foot1, like the ukelele-driven “Growing Old on Bleecker Street” and “After Hours,” which was so much fun to hear live.  They followed it up with a cover of Bastille’s “Pompeii” that (as with all of their covers) makes it impossible to go back to the original version because they just do it better!

AJR Gramercy Theatre 15March2014 photo by Alyloveyx 3

They even brought back a song from the AJR archives, “3AM,” which was a nice addition to the set and for fans who had been around since they first started adding videos to YouTube a couple of years ago.

As if we weren’t impressed enough already, for their encore AJR sat down on the edge of the stage and beckoned their fans closer.  Without microphones, they did a cover of “Wagon Wheel,” which we could hear perfectly from the back.  It seemed like a fitting tribute to their days busking in Washington Square Park.  They ended the show with their single “I’m Ready,” which had the whole crowd dancing and clapping along.

Having seen them before, we were expecting an incredible show, but we were seriously impressed with this show and how much they’ve stepped up their game.  They have a few more dates coming up this Spring, and trust us, you do not want to miss this!  At this rate they’ll be selling out arenas this time next year.  We’re so excited to see what’s in store for this talented trio! Even more remarkable, AJR are a completely independent, DIY project – they write, produce and record songs in their parents’ living room in NYC and have full creative control.  As they say, No Label.  Just Fans.
