The Friday Five: Rooney Songs

Robert Schwartzman’s California Roll Tour kicks off tonight in Boston.  We’re beyond excited for this tour –  for starters, Robert has written some of our favorite songs of all time (both solo and as the front man of Rooney) and we haven’t seen him in ages!  But the tour itself is something completely new and unexpected – he’s hosting it on a 30-passenger party bus.   We literally have no idea what to expect from this show which definitely adds an extra air of excitement!  So, in honor of the tour, here are our favorite Rooney songs!  (It was nearly impossible to keep this to 5 songs).

1. “Blueside”
The band’s first official single.  Bonus points if you caught Robert performing the song in “The Princess Diaries.”

2. “Popstars”
Robert is always ahead of his time – the lyrics of this song are even more relevant today than when it was released in 2003.

3. “I’m Shakin”
Hey man, do you know who sings this song?  ROONEY!

4. “I Should’ve Been After You”
This song and video perfectly capture Rooney’s retro sounds.

5. “I Can’t Get Enough”
Warning: watching this video will make you want to go roller skating. (Luckily the revival of all things 90s lately has included roller rinks!)

Bonus #1: Robert Schwartzman – “Out Of My Mind”

Bonus #2:  Solobob – “The Victim”
Robert’s first solo venture, and the greatest music video of all time.

Nick Jonas Releases New Single “Jealous”

Nick Jonas has been keeping busy since the Jonas Brothers broke up.  He’s been in the studio writing new music for his solo launch – without The Administration this time!  In between fashion week shows in NYC, Nick J made a few press stops to promote his latest single, “Jealous.”

The song was inspired by Nick’s jealous feelings when other guys look at his girlfriend, a former beauty-queen.   Wonder if she ever gets jealous of all the fan girls looking at Nick?  Maybe he should post less revealing photos on Instagram…

You can download “Jealous” on iTunes or Amazon now.  In addition to the new music, Nick also announced a new tour this fall!  Receive early access to tickets when you pre-order the new album HERE.   Check out the dates below. (P.S Nick: no New Jersey or New York date?  Okay…)

The Friday Five: Songs Of The Week

We’ve spent most of the last 2 weeks at the US Open, our favorite time of the year.  Here’s what we’ve been listening to this week!  We’ll be back to regular blogging next week after the finals.

1. Demi Lovato – “Really Don’t Care”
We think this is the US Open DJ’s favorite song, because we heard it at least five times a day.  Or maybe he’s just really excited about the Demi World Tour, which kicks off tomorrow?

2. MKTO – “Classic”
MKTO performed at Arthur Ashe Kids Day this year, getting the US Open off to a fun start with this classy jam.

3. Hunter Hayes – “Wildcard”
This should be the theme song for every player that gets a wild card into a tournament.   Would have been a perfect song for Hunter to perform at Arthur Ashe Kids Day!  But we were totally okay with hearing “Tattoo” twice.  Tickets are on sale now for the “Tattoo (Your Name) Tour!”

4. Nick & Knight – “Switch”
We got a little break from the tennis action on Wednesday when we headed to Nick & Knight’s album release show at the Highline.  The show was a preview of what to expect on their tour this fall, and trust us, you don’t want to miss it.  Their harmonies, choreography, and bromance are amazing.

5. NKOTB – “Single” & Backstreet Boys “The One”
Another US Open DJ favorite is “Viva La Vida” by Coldplay.  Which just brings back memories of the NKOTBSB tour opener mashup of NKOTB’s “Single” and Backstreet Boys’ “The One.”  So naturally we just start singing NKOTBSB anytime we hear it.

AJR To Release Infinity EP on September 23rd!

While we have to wait a bit longer for the release of AJR’s debut album, “Living Room,” we’ll still be getting some new music this month!  The indie pop trio, brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met, announced that they will release the “Infinity EP” on September 23rd.   The EP will feature their next single, “Infinity,” as well as fan favorites “Alice By The Hudson” and “3AM.”  There’s even a remix of their hit “I’m Ready” by the guys themselves. (Have you entered their remix contest yet?)  Check out the tracklisting below.  You can pre-order the EP on iTunes or Amazon now!

AJR “Infinity EP” Tracklisting
1. “Infinity”
2. “Alice By The Hudson”
3. “Pitchfork Kids”
4. “3AM”
5. “I’m Ready” (Remix by AJR)

AJR’s influences include Imagine Dragons, Kanye West, and the Beach Boys.  The band manages to sound like each one of them, and yet none of them at all, as they have a sound that’s all their own.   The brothers wrote, mixed, produced and recorded the songs on the EP from their living room in NYC.  One of our favorite tracks, “Alice By The Hudson,” sounds like a modern day version of “Surfer Girl.”  Watch a performance of the song below.

AJR will be heading out on tour this Fall, stay tuned for tour dates!  You can pickup a copy of the “I’m Ready EP” on iTunes or Amazon now.  Be sure to follow AJR & Secret Fangirls for more updates!

The Friday Five: Nick & Knight’s Greatest Hits

In case you haven’t heard, Nick & Knight’s debut album will be released next week!  The album, out September 2nd, is a collaboration between all time boy band greats Nick Carter and Jordan Knight.   In celebration of the album, here’s a look at our favorite Nick & Knight songs and collaborations.  If you’re in NYC, you can celebrate the album release with Nick & Knight at Highline Ballroom!  Get more info here.  You can pre-order Nick & Knight’s album on iTunes now!

1.  Jordan Knight – “Give It To You”
Jordan’s first solo hit was a smash on TRL back in the day, although looking back we probably shouldn’t have been singing this song.  Oh well.  It was co-written by Robin Thicke, so it all makes sense now.

2. Jordan Knight featuring Donnie Wahlberg – “Stingy”
Nick & Knight’s album isn’t the first time he’s teamed up with a fellow boy band member.  We love this collaboration between Jordan & Donnie.

3. Nick Carter – “Just One Kiss”
While Nick’s solo career never reached the height of Jordan’s, he did release his 2nd solo album in 2011, including this catchy lead single.

4. NKOTBSB – “Don’t Turn Out The Lights”
The start of the Carter-Knight bro-mance began in 2010 when the supergroup, NKOTBSB was formed, AKA the greatest thing to happen in boy band history.

5. Nick & Knight – “One More Time”
And the second greatest thing to happen in boy band history: the first single released by the duo!  We can’t wait to see them on tour this fall.  Check out all the dates here!

The Strypes at the Music Hall of Williamsburg

We caught The Strypes show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, part of their mini-tour of the US this week in support of their “4 Track Mind” EP.  It was a relentless onslaught of talent from start to finish.  It’s hard to believe that all 4 members of the band, hailing from Cavan, Ireland, are still in their teens.  The band got their start by playing in pubs around Ireland, where to get people’s attention, they learned to play loud, fast, good old fashioned rhythm and blues.  Their influences include The Yardbirds, Bo Diddley, The Rolling Stones, and Dr. Feelgood.

IMG_2806
The band proved that they were total masters of their instruments – Ross Farrelly (16) on harmonica & lead vocals; Josh McClorey (18) on lead guitar; Peter O’Hanlon (18) on bass; and Evan Walsh (17) on drums.  As if that wasn’t enough, near the end of their set, everyone just switched instruments – Farrelly on guitar; McClorey on bass; and O’Hanlon on harmonica.  O’Hanlon had an impressive harmonica solo that had everyone in awe.   All their time spent winning over crowds has certainly paid off.  The crowd was one of the most animated we’ve ever seen, and the band had everyone jumping and dancing along from start to finish.

IMG_2809
We can’t say enough good things about The Strypes, and neither can Rolling Stone.  If you ever have a chance to see them live, GO!   They are incredibly gifted young performers, and if they are this good now they can only get better.
