The Main Event Tour With NKOTB & TLC Hits Long Island, NY

There ain’t no party like a Block Party!  New Kids On The Block’s Summer Tour, aptly titled, “The Main Event,” stopped at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island over the weekend.  As with any NKOTB event, it was a nonstop party from start to finish!  It was everything we expected from this tour, and more.  NKOTB know how to BRING IT each and every night on stage.  Our review started as a fangirl keysmash but we managed to recover enough to write actual words.

P1230965

Round 1:  Nelly
Nelly got the party started with hits like “Country Grammar,” “Ride Wit Me” and “Hot in Herre,” making everyone feel like they were back in high school.

P1220823

Round 2: TLC
T-Boz and Chilli win for best outfits of the night.  Their holographic jumpsuits and their dancers’ “TLC” printed overalls made us feel like we were back in 1999.  The highlight of the set was a singalong to their hit “Waterfalls,” as the crowd held up lights in memory of Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes.

P1230137

Round 3: New Kids On The Block
The New Kids just get better and better with age.  NKOTB know how to put on a SHOW.  They also know how to make every fan in the arena feel like a part of the action.  Their stage setup is one of the coolest we’ve ever seen, with moving risers and multiple runways, so everyone has a chance to be close to the band.  And they know exactly what the fangirls want.  Change cam?  Check. Tuxedos?  Check.  Dance Moves?  Check.

P1230524

Their set was a mix of old favorites and recent ones, and the year of each song’s release was written on the big screen – from 1984 to 2013.  After singing “Please Don’t Go Girl,” Joey McIntyre said he’d been singing that song for 27 years, and asked the crowd if he could sing for 27 more, generating lots of screams from the audience (YES, PLEASE!)

P1240043

Jordan Knight came out for a solo segment, his white shirt billowing open thanks to a couple of wind machines.  Joey McIntyre followed, but decided to take things one step further and abandoned his shirt entirely.   Donnie Wahlberg, once known for his tank top ripping and getting extremely um, close to fans in the front row, is happily married now to Jenny McCarthy, who was also in attendance.   Instead of his old antics, Donnie led the crowd in a singalong of “Lean On Me,” while hundreds of #SelfiesForDonnie rotated on the big screen.

P1230797

A highlight of the show was when the band dispersed into the crowd during “Tonight,” getting even closer to some lucky fans.  Joey’s adorable son Griffin kicked off the song,  singing from on top of the piano.  He even did a spinning headstand.  Trust us, this kid is going to be playing arenas with (we hope) his own boyband one day!

P1230749

NKOTB are kicking off the 1st of 2 nights at Madison Square Garden tonight.  There’s just a few more stops left on The Main Event Tour, but if you can get to a show, it’s a MUST.

The Friday Five: Mariah Carey’s #1s

Few artists have had as much chart topping success as Mariah Carey. She ranks in second place in the most #1 singles of any artist, just behind The Beatles. She just announced her upcoming second full album of her 18 #1 hits, named “#1 to Infinity.”   Here are our all time favorite Mariah #1s and music videos!

1. “Fantasy”

This video is basically our Summer outfit and activity goals.

2. “One Sweet Day” featuring Boyz II Men

Why aren’t there more boyband/pop star duets? We need an *NSYNC/Britney single. The closest we have is Hannah Montana and Jonas Brothers “We Got The Party”

3. “Heartbreaker” featuring Jay-Z

Definitely one of the greatest music videos of the TRL era (RIP). We’d still vote for it today.

4. “Honey”

We love that this video is a mini Bond movie.  They just don’t make music videos like this anymore!

5. “Always Be My Baby”

Mariah will always be our #1

The Friday Five: *NSYNC’s “No Strings Attached” Turns 15!

This week mark’s the 15th anniversary of one of the greatest albums of all time – *NSYNC’s “No Strings Attached.” We have fond memories of pre-ordering the CD at Sam Goody, running to the mall after school the day it came out to pick it up. And of course, you weren’t cool unless you brought the album with you the next day and fangirled over the pictures of your favorite (JC and Lance) in the CD booklet! In honor of this momentous occasion, here are our favorite songs from “No Strings Attached.”  We recommend celebrating by watching *NSYNC: Live from Madison Square Garden and dancing along.

1. “Bye Bye Bye”
Everything about this song is amazing. The dance moves, the video, that note JC hits?

2. “It’s Gonna Be Me”
The origin of *NSYNC’s signature slow lean and pop.

3. “I Thought She Knew”
*NSYNC were known for their moves and style, but this track proved they could SING. We get chills every time we listen to it. If we ever get to hear this live (Which we will because a reunion tour will happen.) we will be in tears.

4. “It Makes Me Ill”
Don’t you feel awesome when you can sing along to that quick verse at the beginning?

5. “Digital Get Down”
Basically, *NSYNC sang about Face Time before it was even a thing.

Bonus: “Space Cowboy” feat. Lisa Left Eye Lopes
Yes, they rode mechanical bulls during this song on tour.

Bonus #2: “Just Got Paid”
MONEY MONEY MONEY

The Friday Five: 90s Teen Movies

We’re excited that The Duff is finally in theaters since it’s been a while since we’ve had a teen comedy in theaters – unlike the 90s when one seemed to open every week.  Here are some of our favorite 90s teen movies and their best musical moments.

1. Clueless
The greatest movie of all time, and one of the greatest soundtracks, with everyone from Coolio to Radiohead to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.  The soundtrack is being reissued in April on vinyl for its 20th (!!!) anniversary.

2. Drive Me Crazy
Starring a pre-Entourage Adrian Grenier and a post-Sabrina Melissa Joan Hart, with a theme song by Britney Spears.

3. She’s All That
So many great musical moments, like Rachel Leigh Cook walking down the stairs to “Kiss Me” by Sixpence None the Richer.  But our favorite is the dance scene, where the entire school knows the choreography to “Funk Soul Brother” by Fatboy Slim.

4. Never Been Kissed
Michael Vartan = bae.  We can’t listen to the Beach Boys’ “Don’t Worry Baby” without thinking of this movie’s ending.

5. 10 Things I Hate About You
Everyone wanted to be serenaded by Heath Ledger.

Sam Hunt’s Lipstick Graffiti Tour Hits NYC

Sam Hunt brought his first headlining tour, The Lipstick Graffiti Tour, to NYC last night.  The show, which took place at Irving Plaza, sold out within minutes of going on sale.  And who said New Yorkers don’t like country?  It’s been a whirlwind 8 months for Sam since he signed with MCA Nashville and released “Leave The Night On” last summer.  He gathered support by working as a songwriter in Nashville, writing tracks for Keith Urban, Billy Currington and more, before releasing his “Behind The Pines” mixtape for free online last year.

P1140505

His set included tracks from that mixtape and his debut album, “Montvallo,” as well as the songs he penned for other artists.  Do “Cop Car” or “We Are Tonight” ring any bells?  We love going to country shows because they are usually one big singalong – the audience knows every word, and last night was no exception!  You could see how much it meant to Sam to have so many people singing along to the songs he wrote – he seemed genuinely touched.  It’s one thing to be a good songwriter, but Sam is also a talented performer. You can tell how passionate he is about music, and how much he loves being on stage.  It’s just not a good concert unless you get chills at some point, and despite the hot venue we had chills over and over again.  Throughout the set he interacted with the crowd, even coming down to the floor to have a “House Party” with the lucky fans in the front row!  And we’re pretty sure the girls he sang “Take Your Time” to are still recovering from their fangirl coma.

P1140279
There is a lot of talk about what country music is now, and if Sam should even be considered a country artist.  But fans aren’t so concerned with what genre an artist is – they just want good music! And he introduces new fans to the country genre, is this such a bad thing?  We’ve all grown up listening to a variety of artists, Sam included, and you can hear the range of influences in his music. Between each song he played, he sampled tracks from everyone from R Kelly to Jay Z to Miley Cyrus, yet this all worked together.  An acoustic medley of 90s songs was also a highlight of his set.  The band led a singalong of hits by Reba, Mariah Carey, Destiny’s Child and Deana Carter.

P1140332

Opening act Native Run got the crowed pumped up with an energetic set, including a cover of TLC’s “Waterfalls.”  We were majorly impressed by Rachel Beauregard totally crushing Lisa’s rap. TLC, if you need some help on the Main Event Tour this summer, give Rachel a call!  If you’re heading to a Lipstick Graffiti Tour stop, make sure you get there early to check them out.

The Lipstick Graffiti Tour continues through April (and is mostly sold out), but you can catch Sam alongside Hunter Hayes and Lady Antebellum on the Wheels Up Tour this summer. Can you say dream tour lineup? If you have a chance to see Sam on tour, GO! He’ll be headlining much bigger venues, very soon.

The Friday Five: *NSYNC Videos

It’s tearing up our hearts that an *NSYNC reunion hasn’t happened yet.  But we are never giving up hope.  Especially since the band members are all still friends – Lance revealed on Watch What Happens Live that the guys have a group text and talk almost every day. (!!!!)  Last night, E! aired a special on Lance Bass’ wedding to Michael Turchin.  It was a beautiful ceremony, and a historic moment, and we’re so glad that Lance and Michael shared with us all.  Oh, and how amazing was it seeing Joey and JC?  (Chris was there too but we only caught a brief glimpse of him)  We’re still fangirling over JC’s role as the “wedding singer.”  He hasn’t aged a day (sorry Justin, but he was always our fave), and it reminded us just how much we need to see JC, and the rest of the guys, on stage again.

So while we wait for that reunion tour announcement (seriously, the amount we would be willing to pay for tickets to that tour increases daily), watch our favorite *NSYNC videos and try not to drive yourself crazy wanting them back.

1. “I Drive Myself Crazy”
We used to re-enact this video, which we had recorded on a VHS tape.  So many great moments:  Lance and his flowers.  Justin’s hair.  JC’s eyes (swoon)

2. “Bye Bye Bye”
We voted for this video on TRL EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.   If you claim to not know the “Bye Bye Bye” dance, you are lying.

3. “Pop”
All that matters is that you recognize that’s it’s just about RESPECT!

4. “It’s Gonna Be Me”
The video that launched the signature “lean and pop” move (now replicated by the one-man boyband Austin Mahone)

5. “I Want You Back”
We prefer the European version of the video, which takes place in space, and has the guys in tight tops and baggy waggy pants.

BONUS: “U Drive Me Crazy”
Another European video.  Just watch it, we can’t even explain.
