One of our favorite local NYC bands to burst onto the scene in recent months, Born Cages, are gearing up to release a debut full length with Razor&Tie/Washington Square Music later this year. Since October, we’ve been lucky enough to watch their audiences grow from about 15 people to close to 200 people! Comprised of lead singer/guitarist Vlad Holiday, keyboardist Amanda Carl, bassist Pete Malleo, and drummer Dave Tantao, Born Cages capture pure energy and emotion on “The Sidelines EP” with some pretty insane guitar solos and infectious melodies.
In anticipation of the band’s new album, rumored to be out this fall (fingers crossed), Holiday graciously took the time to answer some of our burning questions!
SecretFangirls.com: There are rumors of a fall release for a Born Cages full length album. Is there any truth to them?
Vlad Holiday: We’re working our way to the album. We’re gonna be doing some more touring before we release it, but we’re definitely hoping to have it out this year.
SF: Is there a song on the album or that you’ve written that you are itching to release?
VH: There’s a couple that come to mind. Actually I haven’t told anyone this yet, but we’re going to release a new track from the album very soon, so keep an ear out for that! It’s definitely one that I’ve been itching to put out.
SF: What song means the most to you that you’ve written? Will it make it on the album?
VH: That’s tough to say…but I wrote a song about a fan that was going through some very dark times. It ended up being one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, and will definitely be on the album. A couple months ago we toured in his area and sang the song live for him for the first time – it was kind of a surreal feeling.
SF: Is there a specific inspiration or vibe that has to be present to write?
VH: There definitely needs to be inspiration. I can try to edit a song or part at almost any time, but I can’t force myself to write a song from nothing when I’m not inspired.
SF: Do you guys have any pre show rituals?
VH: I like to warm up my voice before every show. Actually it suffers a bit when I don’t. I sing along backstage to this weird playlist I have on my iPhone, and typically all the other bands stare at me like I’m doing voodoo.
SF: What would be your “must-haves” on a tour rider?
VH: Wifi and alcohol are nice.
SF: What is your favorite song to perform live?
VH: I love playing the songs people know. We’ve been fortunate enough to start having people singing along every now and then, and one of the biggest validation for creating a song or performing a song is for the audience to relate and to join in on the experience.
SF: Who would be on your dream tour lineup?
VH: Let’s say The Vaccines, Metric, Haerts, and us. I’m gonna leave the obvious arena bands off this list.
SF: What musician would you totally “fan girl” over if you met?
VH: I totally didn’t fan girl when I met Metric’s drummer Joules and told him that my band covered his. So, I wouldn’t know… Oh, and I’ve always said I need to shake Paul McCartney’s hand before I die. Scr3w the h8ers
SF: What was the first concert you went to?
VH: Queens Of The Stone Age when Songs For The Deaf came out.
SF: Who are your biggest musical influences?
VH: That’s classified information, lady. Well the truth is, my biggest musical inspirations come from different corners for different reasons. I love blues guitar music, but not in love with some of the songwriting or vocals in that field. I love ambient and moody songs like Lykke Li’s for example, but when I’m in a certain mood I’ll need some M.I.A. to pretend to dance to. I love U2 for their lyrics and grandeur but sometimes I need something that rocks a bit harder. I love The Beatles, but… well they’re just all around great. I’ve got too many musical influences to even narrow it down to a list of 10 without it feeling like it’s taken out of context. The best way to know who inspires someone to write is to listen to what they write.

It feels like we’ve taken forever to get here, but we are finally less than ONE WEEK away from the release of Austin Mahone’s debut album, “The Secret!”
Austin just unveiled another track off the album called “Next To You,” and it’s AMAZING. It has the 90s boy band sound that Austin the one man boy band has been channeling, but with a modern edge. We cannot wait to see him perform this one live. (P.S. please play it next weekend at BLI Summer Jam!)
The track almost sounds like someone had written it for *NSYNC back in the day, dusted it off, and updated for Austin. Listen closely – can’t you just picture that classic *NSYNC lean and drop in the choreography?
You can pre-order “The Secret” on iTunes now and get an instant download of “MMM Yeah,” “Till I Find You,” and “All I Ever Need!” The full album, including “Next To You,” will be released on Tuesday, May 27th!
Tune into the Today Show on Monday, May 26th to see Austin perform live! (Or if you’re in NYC, get to Rockefeller Center by 6AM and see him in person!)
“Fox & Friends” unveiled the lineup for its sixth annual “All-American Summer Concert Series” today! Concerts kick off this Friday and continue every week until Labor Day. The diverse lineup includes country artists, classic rockers, and 90s faves Boyz II Men and Gin Blossoms!
We haven’t been to a “Fox & Friends” morning concert yet, but we have passed by at 7am and wished we were there. It looks like one giant summer party – they even serve Famous Dave’s Barbecue! If you’re debating whether or not you should squeeze in a quick concert before work or school, it’s always worth it! Will you be tired? For a day. Will you be majorly fangirling over that time Boyz II Men serenaded you? Forever. We still regret not going to see Cody Simpson last summer!
All concerts are free and take place in the Fox News Channel Plaza at 1211 Avenue of the Americas. The show tapes from 7 to 9am, but we recommend getting there early for a good spot! (and first dibs on BBQ). Check out the Fox & Friends site for all the details!

Country duo Dan + Shay just announced dates for their first headlining tour to support their debut album, “Where It All Began!” The tour kicks off in October in Minneapolis, and they’ll be making stops across the country including New York City! We get extremely excited when country artists have smaller scale shows in NYC, as it’s unfortunately a rare occurrence! And we might have asked Dan + Shay (and Hunter Hayes) to make sure they included a stop in NY on their next tour (thanks for listening! ;).) We cannot WAIT for this!
We just caught Dan + Shay opening for Hunter Hayes on the We’re Not Invisible Tour, with a short acoustic set pre-show. They were amazing live, and our only complaint was that we didn’t get to hear enough of our favorite songs! Which would be every track on the album. So we’re thrilled that we’ll be seeing them again soon, playing a full set!
Watch the tour announcement below & stay tuned to DanAndShay.com for ticketing and meet & greet info! Tickets go on sale next week.

The Vamps just released their next single, “Somebody to You!” While she’s not featured on the album version, Demi Lovato teamed up with the Vamps for the single release! Listen to the track below!

Unfortunately we are still (impatiently) waiting for a US album release date, and will hopefully have one soon! In the meantime you can get their single “Wild Heart” on iTunes now!
The Vamps will be back in the US for a headlining show in NYC on June 15th, before they join Austin Mahone on tour later this summer!
Danielle Bradbery just released the video for her new single, “Young in America.” Check it out below!

Hunter Hayes’ sophomore album, “Storyline,” just debuted at #1 on the Country Charts & #3 overall! It’s his highest charting album to date, and his second #1 on the country charts. It’s also one of our favorite albums of the year this far. On his self-titled debut, Hunter recorded every instrument and vocal himself. (He plays over 30 instruments). For “Storyline,” it was a more collaborative process, as Hunter recorded with his touring band: Sam Ellis, Devin Malone, Matt Utterback, and Steve Sinatra. Check out our track-by-track review!
“Wild Card” What a fun way to open a record! This uptempo song is definitely one of our favorites on this album. It’s the perfect opening number too, as we saw during our Storyline release week shows! The song is a nice reminder to always be yourself – you never know who loves your little quirks!
“Storyline” The title track for Hunter’s sophomore effort was actually written pretty late in the writing process but it’s a great concept of living one’s life – like it’s a story that’s still being written!
“Tattoo”
Likely the second single off the album, Hunter plays this as part of the encore on the “We’re Not Invisible Tour.” Even the first time hearing it, you find yourself singing along. And we basically haven’t stopped singing or listening to it since our first Storyline release week show! This should be a big summer hit for Hunter! If it does well, he said at his iHeartRadio show that he’ll get a tattoo of “your name.”
“Still Fallin”
Every album needs a love song! Hunter’s songwriting is definitely showcased in this song. Everyone who has ever been in love can totally relate to what he’s singing about – being with someone for so long and still falling in love with them every minute of every day.
“Invisible”
The first single released from the album is an anthem for anyone who has ever felt powerless and invisible. The song is especially powerful and moving when the whole arena is singing along.
“You Think You Know Somebody”
If you ever had any doubts as to Hunter’s talent just watch his guitar solos in this song. This is definitely “as angry as it gets” on this album, as Hunter likes to say. (Hunter’s angriest song would actually be “More Than I Should” – you can literally feel it from the first note he plays)
“Flashlight “
Hunter said this song was written as a follow up to “Faith to Fall Back On.” It’s definitely one to remind you there’s a light at the end of every tunnel and that no matter how dark it gets, there are people right next to you ready to help you find your way.
“Secret Love”
The anthem for every band member that’s ever been told to lie about having a girlfriend (fyi we all know the truth anyway so might as well just be honest). Hunter sings about a secret relationship which just makes us wonder who it could have been (we’re a gossip free zone so we’ll leave the guesses to you!)
“Nothing Like Starting Over”
This track is kind of the anthem for everyone who has ever let out a huge sigh of relief for starting over. Hunter really nailed it with this song, too.
“If It’s Just Me” We always think this is Dan+Shay when the song starts, but once we realize it’s Hunter, we understand why they’re touring together.
“Love Too Much” In a world where showing love is a delicate balance, Hunter croons “You can never say love too much”. Hunter is definitely a “lover not a fighter” and that is displayed in his ballads. Who doesn’t love a guy that’s not afraid to show his sensitive side!
Get your copy of Storyline on iTunes now & visit HunterHayes.com for any of Hunter’s upcoming tour dates!
America’s boy band, Midnight Red, just released a new cover video, and this time it’s in Spanish! Watch their cover of “Can’t Remember to Forget You” by Shakira featuring Rihanna below!
We love Midnight Red for being true to the boy band genre, with their synchronized dance moves and harmonies. We can’t wait to see them at Summer Jam!
