The Friday Five: Our Favorite Songs of the Week

Happy Friday!  Here’s what we’ve been listening to this week.

5.  Demi Lovato – “Trainwreck”
We’re seeing the Neon Lights Tour tonight, and hoping that she’ll bring back this classic from her first album

4. Justin Timberlake – “Murder”/”Poison” Mashup
If you haven’t caught JT’s 20/20 Experience Tour yet, what are you waiting for?  This mashup of “Murder” and Bell Biv Devoe’s “Poison” is a highlight in the nearly 3-hour show.

3.  Austin Mahone – “Till I Find You”
We caught Austin’s Artist to Watch Tour at Hammerstein Ballroom this week, and immediately fell in love with this song.  It sounds like something NSYNC could have released, which is always a good thing!  But Austin (the one man boy band) has yet another winner with this song.  When is his album coming out again?!  We’ve been waiting so long!!

2.  Dan + Shay – “What You Do To Me”
This song was released once pre-orders went live for their debut album, “Where It All Began,” out April 1st.  And we immediately listened to it 5 times in a row.  We love what we’ve heard from Dan + Shay so far, and can’t wait for more!

1.  Austin Mahone – “What About Love”
Yes, Austin gets to be on this list twice because his show at Hammerstein Ballroom was just that good.  We’re still trying to learn the “What About Love” dance.  Maybe Austin can teach us next tour?

Top 10 Moments of 2013 – Part 2

It’s almost time for 2014, so you know what that means – time to recap our favorite moments of 2013!  (We’re so original here).   As we mentioned before, 2013 was an awesome year for music, especially if you’re a secret fangirl.   Here are our favorite things that happened this year.  Check out Part 1 here.

5. Summer Break Tour

We were already thrilled that Victoria Justice was heading out on a summer tour, and the lineup got even better when it was announced she would be joining our favorite boy band, Big Time Rush!  The show was the perfect summer tour:  fun music and cute boys on a warm summer night under the stars.  What more could you ask for?!   BTR broke out their amazing dance moves, and Victoria’s “Shake” dance has a fun Zumba choreography.   Learn it here!  Openers Olivia Somerlyn and Jackson Guthy are ones to watch for in 2014.

4.  The Package Tour
It’s no secret that we love boybands, so a tour with three of the best ever on the same bill was like a dream come true!   98 Degrees, Boyz II Men and New Kids on the Block joined forces for one of the most entertaining tours of the year.  NKOTB have proved time and time again they still have the right stuff, we are pretty sure 98 Degrees haven’t aged a day since 2002, and who doesn’t love Boyz II Men’s 90s jams?  They all seem to get better and better with age.   And what comes with age is simply not caring what people think, and this is a beautiful thing.  If you haven’t seen NKOTB live, get to a show as soon as possible.

3.  Hunter Hayes

We expected big things from Hunter after winning Best New Artist at the CMAs last year and we were right.  He released the deluxe version of his debut album, “Encore,” this summer with new tracks like “I Want Crazy” and “A Thing About You.”  We had the chance to see him live and he does not disappoint.   We knew he would be amazing, but Hunter blew us away with his serious musicianship and his passionate performance.

2.  Justin Timberlake’s Return to Music

We’ve been impatiently waiting for the day JT would come back to his musical roots, and let’s face it, it wasn’t looking like it would happen anytime soon.  Little did we know JT had secretly recorded an album last summer and would be releasing it so soon after that thrilling “I’m Ready” teaser came out.  If you haven’t made it to a show on the 20/20 Experience World Tour, pay whatever amount you can find tickets for because JT is WORTH IT!  He performs for nearly 3 hours, plays every song you’d want to hear, and has a few surprises up his sleeve that we won’t ruin for you.  Just seriously, go.  You never know – it could be 7 years before you get the chance again!

1.  *NSYNC REUNITING AT THE VMAs!!!!

We could hardly believe it when the rumors started earlier that week.   Sure, it was only 90 seconds, but it was more *NSYNC than we’ve had in a decade!   And they’ve proved that they’ve still got it – if they were that great after just a few hours of rehearsal, imagine if they planned a full tour?  And man, we miss hearing JC Chasez’s voice.  We’re just keeping our fingers crossed for a full reunion tour.   We don’t mind waiting (Lance Bass announced his first solo single will be out in January!) as long as it happens!

Top 10 Moments of 2013 – Part 1

It’s almost 2014, so you know what that means – time to recap our favorite moments of 2013!  (We’re so original here).   As we mentioned before, 2013 was an awesome year for music, especially if you’re a secret fangirl.   Here are our favorite things that happened this year.

10.  78Violet
After what seemed like years of talk, 78Violet, aka Aly & AJ, announced an official reunion and a new single, “Hothouse.”  We are loving their new sound!   They are very interactive with their fans, and had some adorable sister moments on stage at their Grammercy Theater show, like mixing up their mic-pacs and swapping them back on stage.   We also love Aly’s story about their song “53rd Floor” – she realized only after the song was finished she had gotten the floor number wrong. Oops!

9.  Macklemore & Ryan Lewis
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis were everywhere in 2013, and we would put “Can’t Hold Us” and “Thrift Shop” on any Best of 2013 list.   Their live show is just incredible with freestyle rapping, a full horn section, confetti blasters, and some serious crowd surfing.  Not to mention one of the most energetic performers we’ve ever seen!  Oh, and have you heard how Macklemore (aka Ben Haggerty) met his now fiance Tricia Davis?  Take notes: She had heard one of his songs on the radio, and sent him a MySpace message offering to make him a picnic, or so the legend goes.  She did, and they’ve been together ever since.    Fangirling at its finest.  We love it!

8. Jesse McCartney’s Comeback
We’ve been fans of J Mac since his days on “Summerland” and his first album.  Okay, we admit we were fans of Dreamstreet too.  (Remember them?)  He’s been focusing on acting lately, so we were stoked when he announced he would be joining the Backstreet Boys on their 20th Anniversary Tour.   Jesse let us know he’d been in the studio too, and released an EP, In Technicolor Part I, in December. Our favorite song is “Back Together”.

7.  Austin Mahone!
We discovered Austin by actually clicking on an “Amazon MP3 suggests” selection, and boy are we glad we did.   Talent, style, sweet dance moves? Austin is the complete package.  We were counting down the days until his headlining MTV Artist to Watch Tour in the fall, which was sadly postponed, but now means we’re just counting the days until it now kicks off in March!

6.  Selena Gomez Makes the Stars Dance
Selena returned to music this year with her album, “Stars Dance.”  This also marked the first time she released music without her band, The Scene.   Her music and performances are a throwback to early Britney (chair dances!!) and we are loving her pop-dance sound.   Say what you want about her,  but there is no denying the girl can dance and put on a good show.

Stay tuned for Part 2!

Why We’re Excited For 2014

If you’re a secret fangirl, 2013 was an incredible year for music.  Could we ever have guessed that this would finally be the year that Justin Timberlake returned to music?  That 98 Degrees would release an album and tour with New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men?   THAT *NSYNC WOULD REUNITE AT THE VMAS?!    No.  But all of these things happened and more.  We’re hoping that this momentum rolls into 2014 in the form of an *NSYNC reunion tour (just once?!? please?)

Meanwhile, here are some of our sure bets of what music we are excited for in 2014.

Olivia Somerlyn
Olivia Somerlyn is the ultimate Secret Fangirl.   More on that later, but 2013 was a breakthrough for Olivia, as she scored opening slots on the Summer Break Tour with Victoria Justice and Big Time Rush, for the Jonas Brothers, and for Jessie J in the UK.  Olivia is currently working on her debut album, to be released in 2014. Keep an eye out for big this from Olivia in the coming year!  Follow Olivia Somerlyn Twitter, and don’t forget about the #12DaysOfLivGifts on her Official Facebook.

AJR
It’s no secret that we are major fans of AJR.  In the short time since we were introduced to them, we’ve seen them get bigger and bigger.  (Like, the “I’m Ready” video is a serious case of life imitating art).  With a new EP, ‘6foot1,’ being released at the end of this year, an album coming out in the Spring of 2014, and early support from the likes of Sia, Demi Lovato and The Wanted, AJR are the act to watch in 2014. Keep up with AJR every step of the way on Twitter and Facebook.

Midnight Red
We are from the generation where boy bands were defined as “a group of young men who sing and DANCE.”   Aside from Big Time Rush, the generation today is deprived of this wonderfulness.   We will always have NKOTB, Backstreet, and (ONE DAY AGAIN) *NSYNC, but it’s nice to see another proper boy band in the mix today! Don’t forget to follow Midnight Red on Twitter.

Lance Bass
LANCE BASS IS RELEASING A SINGLE IN 2014.  WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS OUR EXCITEMENT FOR THE POSSIBLE TOUR! There really is nothing else to say about this. Get the latest updates from Lance on Twitter.

Hilary Duff
We love Hilary Duff.  The girl is good at everything, manages to stay sweet and humble, and live a normal life with her husband and adorable kid.   After focusing in recent years on her book series and being a mom to baby Luca, we were beyond stoked to hear that Hilary has returned to the studio to work on her fourth album. Follow Hilary on Twitter and get the latest on her new music first!

Ashley Tisdale
Unlike Hilary, we aren’t exactly sure what Ashley Tisdale has been doing the last couple of years, but we are equally thrilled for her comeback to music!  She just released her first single, “You’re Always Here,” with more to come in 2014. Don’t forget to follow Ashley Tisdale on Twitter and “like” her on Facebook .

The Ceremonies
Another trio of brothers, by way of Los Angeles instead of New York.  They have messy hair and wear tight pants, with an early 2000s NY Strokes-vibe – definitely those boys your Mama warned you to stay away from!  Matthew, Mark, and Michael Cook are making waves in the underground scene with their self-titled EP. Expect to hear a lot more from The Ceremonies in 2014. Stay up to date with The Ceremonies on Facebook and Twitter.

Austin Mahone
Austin’s debut album is FINALLY dropping in 2014 (we hope).  We were sad when his MTV Artist to Watch Tour was postponed in October (glad you’re feeling better Austin!!) and we literally cannot wait until his tour kicks off in March!  We have loved each single he’s released more than the last, and are so excited to see what’s in store for him next year.  His recent string of Jingle Ball performances have proved Austin has the talent to go to the next level, with top notch choreography and awesome stage presence.   We are (not so secret) MAHOMIES! Become an official Mahomie and follow Austin on Twitter.

American Authors
You know that song in the Walter Mitty commercial that’s been stuck in your head for 2 days? It’s not a new Imagine Dragons song (don’t worry…we thought it was too!) “The Best Day Of My Life” is by a new band from Brooklyn, NY called American Authors. Recently signed to Island Records, these guys are capturing hearts of fangirls and music junkies alike. Their debut album is due out in 2014, but grab your copy of their self-titled EP on iTunes HERE. American Authors will be playing Sacramento’s own 107.9 The END’s Jingle Ball 2013 with Emblem 3, Panic At The Disco, and Fall Out Boy on 12/21. Get your tickets HERE and don’t forget to follow @aauthorsmusic on twitter for the latest updates from the guys!

Born Cages
If you ever wanted The Strokes to have a musical love child with The Darkness then…REJOICE! Your dreams have come true!! Born Cages are exactly that – complete with insane guitar riffs and gravity defying hair. Hailing from Brooklyn (what’s in the water out there and how can we get some?!) Born Cages recently released The Sidelines – EP in June and we can’t believe it took us this long to find them! Big choruses, church bells, synths and guitar riffs that would make any 80s hair band proud, The Sidelines EP makes us want to get up and dance!! Pick up your copy on iTunes and follow Born Cages on Twitter and “Like” them on Facebook. Next time they roll through your town, check them out. You won’t regret it. I promise.

The Vamps
The British are invading quicker than you’d believe! The Vamps first won our hearts with their song “Can We Dance” and they’re at it again with a new single and a new video for “Wild Heart”.  They have already opened for Selena Gomez and now they’re gearing up for a string of opening dates on Taylor Swift’s RED Tour at The O2 Arena in February. We are expecting a debut album from The Vamps in 2014, making them just another reason we are stoked for the new year!  Follow The Vamps on Twitter and “like” them on Facebook.

Heffron Drive
As much as we love Big Time Rush, we also love Kendall Schmidt’s other band, Heffron Drive, formed with friend and guitarist Dustin Belt.  While the band has a different vibe and sound than BTR (sadly no dancing), we love anything that keeps Kendall up on stage!  (And okay, the electric guitar is maybe even better than the hip rolling) We’re looking forward to everything that the new year holds for Heffron Drive! Follow Kendall and Dustin on Twitter, and don’t forget to “Like” them on Facebook.

What are you hoping to see in 2014? (Besides that *NSYNC reunion tour…NEVER GIVE UP HOPE!)

Austin Mahone Z100 New York Jingle Ball

Last night, Austin Mahone performed at Z100’s Jingle Ball to a sold out crowd at Madison Square Garden.

The “Banga! Banga!” singer wowed in a holographic suit that *NSYNC would have been proud of.  We can’t wait for his debut album, which he says has influences of 90’s boy bands like *NSYNC and Backstreet Boys.  (We don’t call him the one man boy band for nothing!)

It was Austin’s first performance at MSG, and we are sure we’ll be seeing him there again in the future.
