Dan+Shay’s Debut Album “Where It All Began” Is Out Now!

Country duo Dan+Shay just released their debut album, “Where It All Began!”   The duo, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney, met just a year ago in Nashville (in a tent of all places), and started writing songs together the next morning.  It’s been a whirlwind year for them, with the early success of their single, “19 You + Me,” which was added to country radio stations across the US last fall, and has peaked at #12 on the charts as of release day.   They have already been nominated for an Academy of Country Music Award for Vocals Duo of the Year.   Tune in on April 6th to see if they win!

Dan + Shay have been releasing tracks in anticipation of the album, including “19 You + Me,”  “What You Do To Me,” and “Show You Off.”  Each track has already been in heavy rotation in the Secret Fangirl office!  (We may have played “What You Do To Me” about 10 times in a row after it was released during the Oscars.)  The album has been streaming on Spotify for the past week, and yes we have been playing it every day since.  We’re so excited to get the full album for ourselves!

From the first notes of this album, you know it’s going to be on repeat all summer long!  The album is the perfect blend of country crooning, upbeat pop melodies, and lyrics that make us wish it was perpetually summer.  Dan+Shay nailed it not only musically, but from live performances to hanging out with fans before concerts, these guys have the star quality and potential to become heavy hitters in the country world within the next year. Hopefully they can become the next big crossover duo into the pop world, too!

It’s really difficult to pick a favorite song, they’re all so good! A few standout tracks are definitely “Stop Drop + Roll”, “Parking Brake”, and “First Time Feeling”.

Basically, this album makes us want to drive around with the windows down, drinking real Southern sweet tea, and pick up our acoustic guitar again.

AJR Kicks off Spring Tour with Headlining Show at Gramercy Theatre

Our favorite band of brothers, AJR, kicked off their spring tour with a headlining show at NYC’s Gramercy Theatre on Saturday, March 15th.  It’s hard to believe this was only the band’s second headlining show, ever.  They played a solid 1-hour set, including a brand new song and some covers that seriously showed off their vocal ranges.

We were first introduced to AJR (brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met) at CMJ back in October, when they played a showcase at the Gramercy along with artists like Diane Birch.  At the time, there were maybe 30 people in the audience.  It’s amazing to see how far they’ve come in just a few short months!

The near-capacity crowd at Gramercy was dancing and singing along to every song, even tracks like “The Green and the Town” and “Married on a Hill,” which haven’t even been officially released by the band.  The show also marked the first performance of a new song, “Alice By The Hudson,” which AJR described as “the perfect summer song.”  We totally agree, and love the Beach Boys-influence you can hear in this song.   They also played favorites off their debut EP, 6foot1, like the ukelele-driven “Growing Old on Bleecker Street” and “After Hours,” which was so much fun to hear live.  They followed it up with a cover of Bastille’s “Pompeii” that (as with all of their covers) makes it impossible to go back to the original version because they just do it better!

They even brought back a song from the AJR archives, “3AM,” which was a nice addition to the set and for fans who had been around since they first started adding videos to YouTube a couple of years ago.

As if we weren’t impressed enough already, for their encore AJR sat down on the edge of the stage and beckoned their fans closer.  Without microphones, they did a cover of “Wagon Wheel,” which we could hear perfectly from the back.  It seemed like a fitting tribute to their days busking in Washington Square Park.  They ended the show with their single “I’m Ready,” which had the whole crowd dancing and clapping along.

Having seen them before, we were expecting an incredible show, but we were seriously impressed with this show and how much they’ve stepped up their game.  They have a few more dates coming up this Spring, and trust us, you do not want to miss this!  At this rate they’ll be selling out arenas this time next year.  We’re so excited to see what’s in store for this talented trio! Even more remarkable, AJR are a completely independent, DIY project – they write, produce and record songs in their parents’ living room in NYC and have full creative control.  As they say, No Label.  Just Fans.

The Fangirl Handbook #1: Concert Etiquette

We’ve been to a lot of concerts over the years, everywhere from CBGBs (RIP) to Madison Square Garden and everything in between.   So when it comes to concert behavior, we’ve experienced it all, good and bad.

Here are some simple rules to keep in mind at your next show.

1.  There are people behind you!  This is not the time to break out your finest top hat.  Also, please don’t put anyone on your shoulders, especially if you’re already 6+ feet.  And while we love and encourage dancing, please try not to jump back onto the people behind you.

Fan Girl hand book NO TOP HATS         fan girl handbook NO kids on shoulders

2. There is a time and place for screaming.  If the artist is introducing a meaningful ballad, try to keep the “I LOVE YOUUU!” in for just a little bit longer and you’ll be fine.   If you’re waiting in line to see the band, and you get that first up close glimpse of them, we know it’s exciting but please don’t scream.  You’re simultaneously scaring the band and taking up someone else’s brief time with them.

3.  If it’s an arena show, try your best to arrive before the main artist takes the stage.  There is nothing more annoying than having to wait for someone to shuffle by and locate their seats (and they can never find them) blocking your view while you miss your favorite song.

4. Put the phone away.  Of course, take a few photos and videos, but if you are sitting there texting the entire time, why are you there in the first place?  You can do that at home – for free!  And isn’t it nice to experience things in real life once and a while, rather than through a screen?

5.  Personal space.  You aren’t the only person in the room.

6.  No smoking of ANY kind.  This shouldn’t even have to be said, but you’d be surprised.

7.  Mind your beverages.  Try to keep them in your hand, and off of my purse/coat/new shoes/merch I just bought/head/etc.

8.  Standing is totally fine, IF you are in your own seat.  Do not stand in the stairway.  Do not stand on the barricade at the end of the stairway.  Do not stand on your chair. 99.9% of the time, you will be blocking the view of someone who actually paid for a seat in that section.  Also, if you can’t see because you’re seated and someone in front of you is standing, don’t get mad and rudely shout at the other person to sit.  Stand up!  It’s a concert, you should be dancing!

9.  Posters should only be used between songs, or held up for brief moments.  Again, just keep in mind your giant poster board is guaranteed to be blocking the views of everyone behind you.  Easy rule to follow?  If the band is singing, don’t put the sign up.  Wait for between songs.

10. Do not throw things on stage.  Ever.  This is why we can’t have nice things, like bottle caps at concerts.

11. If you are just arriving to a GA show seconds before showtime, no one believes that your “friend” is holding your spot in the front row.  Most likely everyone in the front has already been there for hours (even days), respect that, and don’t violently force and push your way through the crowd.  Want to be in the front?  You’ve got to put in the time.

Now if we could just get everyone to follow these simple guidelines, we can all enjoy the show!  (Don’t even get us started on tennis watching etiquette…)

Stay tuned for part 2 of our Fangirl Handbook:  How to Meet the Band

The Friday Five: Summer Tours That We Are Super Excited For

1. Hunter Hayes – “We Are Not Invisible Tour” feat. Dan+Shay, and Danielle Bradbery
It’s no secret that we are completely obsessed with Hunter Hayes (and Dan+Shay for that matter) but this tour tops this week’s Friday Five. Even better, Hunter is trying to set a world record for most concerts played in 24 hours AND it’s all in the country music deprived Northeast!! Click HERE for dates and ticket info.

2. Backstreet Boys – “In A World Like This Tour”
This morning, BSB announced they will be touring North America with Avril Lavigne. We are totally hyped on that lineup because who didn’t love “Sk8r Boi” the first time around?!  Click HERE for dates and ticket info and visit BackstreetBoys.com for VIP packages, upgrades, and fan club pre-sales.

3. 5SOS – “Stars Stripes and Maple Syrup Tour” feat. Jackson Guthy
Aussie band 5 Seconds Of Summer announced their highly anticipated North American tour and it sold out in minutes and tickets keep popping up for $300 on StubHub for the shows! They don’t even have an album out yet and already selling out concerts? That’s crazy. For ticket info and all of the dates, click HERE!

4. Bruno Mars – “Moonshine Jungle Tour 2014”
We all love “The Lazy Song” and “When I Was Your Man”, and who DIDN’T love his halftime performance!?? Don’t miss your chance to have Bruno croon his way into your heart forever on his upcoming summer tour! Get all of the dates and ticket info HERE.

5. Goo Goo Dolls Summer Tour feat. Daughtry and The Plain White T’s
In keeping with the 90s-00s nostalgia, the Goo Goo Dolls decided to go on another summer tour! This time they’re bringing Daughtry out with them. (we tried to sing one of their songs but it turns out we kept singing Nickleback….hey! kinda the same thing, right?) Click HERE for all of the dates and for ticket information.

Backstreet Boys Announce Summer 2014 North American Tour on GMA

We’re so glad we made the switch from The Today Show to Good Morning America recently – GMA seems to get all of the important fangirl announcements.  Like this morning, when Backstreet Boys revealed they will be heading back out on a North American tour this summer!   We were getting majorly concerned that it was already March and we had no boyband tours to look forward to this year (We even made a list of forgotten bands who could reunite) so we are so excited that Backstreet’s Back in 2014!  This will be their second North American tour since Kevin Richardson rejoined the group last year, just in time for BSB’s 20th Anniversary.   Avril Lavigne will be joining the tour as well, so get ready for a night of early 2000s nostalgia.

Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, March 21st 2014 at 10am local time.  Be sure to visit BackstreetBoys.com for info about fan club pre-sales, VIP packages, upgrades and after parties!
