The Friday Five: Songs Of The Summer

We’re off to the beach for a week and while we’ll never stop fangirling, we won’t be posting.  Here are the songs we’ll be jamming to all week.  Also, it’s Summer y’all!  Go outside and enjoy!

1. Jake Miller – “Rumors”
We’d like to start some rumors with Jake!  There isn’t one song we skip on this surprise EP, and we can probably sing the entire thing by heart already.

2. Austin Mahone – “Dirty Work”
Austin has been busy doing some dirty work for his Mahomies, and it’s worth it!  Y’know this ain’t no 9-5, we’re going sundown to sunrise.  Dirty Work!

3. North of Nine – “Better Off Together”
Jackson Guthy’s voice gets better every time we see North Of Nine live, and his band never fails to bring a grin to our faces during the set.  We’ll ride or die with North Of Nine any day!!

4. Nathan Sykes – “Kiss Me Quick”
Nathan’s voice is what Bruno Mars would call “smoother than a fresh jar of Skippy!”  This song will for sure be on full blast all Summer long.

5. MKTO – “Bad Girls”
We’re suckers for anything with a horn section and MKTO have that covered.  They just dropped an EP with the same name.

Nathan Sykes Makes US Solo Debut With Sold Out Gramercy Theatre Show

Nathan Sykes made his solo US debut with a sold out show at Gramercy Theatre in New York City last night.  Nathan made a name for himself as the youngest and arguably the strongest vocalist in the British boyband, The Wanted which has since disbanded.  After a few minor set backs like vocal surgery, Nathan is ready to take over the pop world!   He’s armed with a velvety smooth voice and a classic sound that even your parents will love.  And trust us, the man can SING.

Nathan Sykes

A few hours before the show started, Nathan had tweeted that he was feeling under the weather and he wasn’t sure if he could even make the show.  But he pulled through and sounded incredible!  Nathan still hit every note and gave 110% into his performance.  You never know what to expect from a debut show where the crowd doesn’t know all the songs, but Nathan had the house dancing from start to finish.  In between songs, Nathan announced his debut solo album will be released in January 2016 in the United States.  We can’t wait to hear recorded versions of our favorite songs from last night like “Twist,” “Freedom,” and “Money.”

It was a fitting place for Nathan to launch his solo career.  The Wanted played a show at Gramercy Theatre that was “where it all began,” for the band, as Nathan mentioned during the show.  After last night, we’re sure that this is also the start of something new and exciting and we can’t wait to be along for the ride!   We love Nathan’s 60s rat pack style and sound, and the fact that he plays with a full, 8 piece band, including a horn section.  Oh, and did we mention Nathan can DANCE?   It’s always a question mark whether or not a boyband member can go solo, but we just might have another JT.

Carly Rae Jepsen Releases “Run Away With Me” Video

Carly Rae Jepsen knows how to craft a hit song and make a cute video.  “Run Away With Me” shows off Carly Rae’s fun-loving, adventurous life as she goofs around and plays tourist in Paris, New York and Tokyo!  The video matches the romantic feeling of the song, making you feel like she took you on the best vacation of your life: dancing on NYC subway platforms, taking in Paris from the top of the Eiffel Tower, and singing karaoke in true Tokyo fashion.

Carly Rae’s 80’s inspired, synth heavy sound on her new album, “EM.O.TION” is just what we’ve been wanting for this summer!

Kacey Musgraves Brings Southern Style to The Paramount in Huntington, NY

Country star Kacey Musgraves served up some Southern style at The Paramount Theater in Long Island, NY over the weekend.  She performed tracks from her new album, “Pageant Material,” which was just released last month, along with hits from the Grammy winning “Same Trailer, Different Park.”  We love Kacey’s style – her set was made to look like a sunset over the Texan desert, complete with neon cactus lights.  Her 5 piece band wore their signature light up suit jackets, and played everything from the steel guitar to the upright bass to the banjo.   They joined Kacey at the front of the stage at the end of the evening for “My House,” doing a little do-si-do.

Throughout the evening, Kacey showed off her vocal range and clever songwriting skills.   Other highlights of her set included a country version of TLC’s “No Scrubs” and a cover of Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” which Kacey penned.  She also filled the audience in on the inspiration for some of the tracks on her new album.  When she was 11 a crazy stage mom called her a “dime store cowgirl,” which Kacey ended up turning into a song.  She gave a  shout out to her “momma” who was in attendance.  We’re sure that even though Kacey’s “not Pageant Material” she’s still proud!

P1290540

The crowd was singing along to every word, even the newer material.  Kacey took time near the end of the set to individually point out and thank fans in the crowd (by name!)   Some had made her unique gifts, others had been to countless shows, and a young girl had asked Kacey to sign her guitar before the show.

P1290633

She closed out the show with an encore that began with a solo acoustic performance of “Cup of Tea” before her hit “Follow Your Arrow.”  Kacey came back out wearing light up boots for a country version of “These Boots Are Made For Walking” which had the whole venue rocking.   She thanked the crowd one final time and wished them safe travels before doing an acapella version of “Happy Trails” with her band.

The Friday Five: Boyband Draft

It’s boyband week over at Billboard.com, AKA the greatest thing ever.  Every week should be boyband week.  In honor of the occasion, Billboard staffers held a fantasy boyband draft, assembling their dream teams.  For this week’s Friday Five, we decided to get in on the fun and do our own boyband draft and create 2 super boybands: J5 and *Big Time Boys on the Block°.  The only rules were that you can’t pick 2 members from the same band.  Check out our picks and vote for your favorite!

Team A: J5 (JC, Joey, James, Jeff and Jesse)

JC Chasez
One of the greatest male vocalists, ever.  He can still hit ALL the notes, and he hasn’t aged a day since “Bye Bye Bye.”

Joey McIntyre
Just watch this performance from The Main Event Tour, and you’ll know why Joey is the MVP of any boyband.  Those vocals.  Those moves.  Those abs.

James Maslow
We knew James was a national treasure during Big Time Rush’s run, but he further proved it in his run to the final 3 of “Dancing With The Stars.”   Enjoy.

Jeff Timmons
Jeff has had the most uh, interesting post-boyband career.  He brings the moves for sure.  Fun fact we somehow just discovered: He was part of a “man band” on VH1 called “Sureshot” with Chris Kirkpatrick, Rich Cronin and Bryan Abrams in 2007.

Jesse McCartney
The most underrated former boyband member (Dreamstreet!).  His last single, “Punch Drunk Recreation,” and the accompanying video (where J Mac basically leads his own boyband) have not gotten nearly enough love.

Team B: *Big Time Boys on the Block°

Nick Carter
Nick has had his struggles in the past but he overcame them and continues to BRING IT every night on stage giving 110% during every show.  He also likes to make up his own moves on stage which is always A+ in my book.

Donnie Wahlberg
Do you watch NKOTV every week on A&E?  NO??  You should.  It’s the greatest night for television and you’ll see why Donnie Wahlberg is my top pick for boyband.  He knows how to treat the fans, he’s great to his wife (secret fangirl: Jenny McCarthy) and his family.  Plus – watch this video for further proof of A+ boybanding.

Nick Lachey
Another former boyband member who has a TV show about his own restaurant (“Raising The Bar” on A&E every Wednesday night.)  Let’s face it, Nick Lachey was the best looking member of 98* and he’s been the most successful – aside from Jeff Timmons’ stripper revue.

Kendall Schmidt
Kendall has seamlessly transitioned into boyband member to acoustic singer-songwriter while not alienating any fans from either end of the spectrum.  He’s got a good voice, and whether he wants to admit it or not – this boy can DANCE!  Plus, he’s got great hair.

Joey Fatone
He appeared on Hannah Montana, dancing with the stars, various food critic reality shows, and he’s still the most underrated member of *N SYNC.  Let’s not forget that Joey was also in “On The Line” with Lance.

James Maslow to Perform at Stream Con in NYC 10/31!

Yesterday was James Maslow’s 25th birthday, and he decided to celebrate by giving a gift to all of his fans!  James announced he is performing at Stream Con in NYC this October!   James has been busy working on solo music since his run to the finals of “Dancing With The Stars” last year, and this will be one of his first solo performances.  We can’t WAIT to hear what he has in store, because he was always one of our favorites from Big Time Rush.  We can only hope that he’ll continue to dance, because on both BTR and DTWS, he totally crushed it.  The Vine below pretty much sums up our excitement about James’ announcement.

Visit the Stream Con website for more info on James’ performance, which will be on Saturday, October 31st.   He will be doing a meet and greet as well, so stay tuned for more info!
