Kacey Musgraves’ Country & Western Rhinestone Review Sparkles In New Jersey

She may not be pageant material but Kacey Musgraves was certainly the star of her “Country & Western Rhinestone Review” when it hit Starland Ballroom in New Jersey over the weekend.   The show sparkled from start to finish.  The shimmery pink curtains decorating the stage, her band’s light-up pink suits, and Kacey’s silvery dress certainly helped set the scene.  Kacey played most of the tracks from her new album, “Pageant Material,” to a sold out crowd.  She thanked everyone for coming out, noting that despite her lack of radio airplay (which she hopes will change), fans still managed to pack Starland Ballroom through word of mouth and finding music on their own.

The energetic crowd knew every word to Kacey’s song and sang along throughout the night.   Kacey explained how she came up with the song “Dime Store Cowgirl” – before a performance when she was 12 or so, a woman told her that her cowboy hat made her look like a “dime store cowgirl.”  She told the crowd she had no idea what it meant at the time but thought it was pretty awesome that years later she wrote a song about it and had a sold out crowd that knew all the words.

We love Kacey’s band, who play everything from steel guitar to the upright bass.  When introducing them affectionately as the “runner ups,” Kacey started the “talent portion” of the evening and each member got to show off their skills, from juggling to balloon animal making.

P1400080

Kacey threw a few covers into her set, including “Mama’s Broken Heart,” which Kacey co-wrote but ended up being recorded by Miranda Lambert.  She told the crowd she “fangirled out hard” when Disney asked her to do a version of a song of her choice for an album.  She chose “A Spoonful of Sugar,” which she performed in the most delightful way.

Opening act The Cactus Blossoms made us feel like we were back at a concert in the 1950s – from their vintage country sound to their throwback look – perfectly set against Kacey’s pink stage.

The Friday Five: 2015 Albums of the Year (Country)

It was way too hard to narrow down all of our favorite albums this year to just 5, so we split between pop and country.  Here are our favorite country albums that were released in 2016!  (Okay so we picked 6, deal)

1.Thomas Rhett – “Tangled Up”
Thomas rode the momentum of his hit single “Makes Me Wanna” and the funky vibes of “Crash And Burn” into an an album full of soulful, R&B tinged jams, all country at heart.  “Die A Happy Man,” which Thomas wrote for his wife Lauren, will make you cry; “Vacation” will make you dance, and “I Feel Good” will turn any day around.

2. Hunter Hayes – “The 21 Project”
2015 was the year of trying new things for Hunter Hayes, including how he released music.  After dropping digital singles throughout the Summer, Hunter released a 3-disc set featuring 7 songs as acoustic, studio and live versions.   “Saint Or A Sinner” is one of our favorite songs of the year, no matter how we listen to it.

3. Kacey Musgraves – “Pageant Material”
Kacey’s latest album sparkles just as much as she does on stage.  She might not be “Pageant Material,” but she sure is great at crafting clever lyrics that anyone can relate to.  Each track has a story of it’s own and they all come together to create one of our favorite country albums of 2015.

4. A Thousand Horses – “Southernality”
What do you get when you mix Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers Band, and a whole lot of Southern moonshine? A Thousand Horses released the best “throwback” country rock album this year that we’ll be spinning for years to come.  Standout songs are the title track, “Trailer Trashed,” and “Travelin’ Man.”

5. Old Dominion – “Meat and Candy”
Even the band has commented on the strange name of their debut album but “Meat and Candy” is actually a fitting title for an album that has lots of sweet jams along with some more substantial tracks.  Their live show is not to be missed.

BONUS: Cam – “Untamed”
Released last week, Cam’s album barely made the cut but it’s one of the strongest debut albums we’ve heard in a long time!  We’re still kicking ourselves for not picking up one of those cute yellow flash drive bracelets when we saw Cam open for Dan+Shay!

Lineup Announced for 2016 Southern Ground Festival in Charleston

Let’s be real – concerts make us hungry.   But more often than not, we’re forced to eat bland, overpriced venue food.   Which is why we love the idea behind the Southern Ground Festival: it celebrates both the music and the food of the South!   The festival was started by Zac Brown in 2011, and will be held for the 5th time on April 16-17th 2016 in Charleston, South Carolina.  The lineup includes an exciting lineup of country artists (literally it’s like all of our favorites) and will feature gourmet concessions from local vendors.

Kacey Musgraves Brings Southern Style to The Paramount in Huntington, NY

Country star Kacey Musgraves served up some Southern style at The Paramount Theater in Long Island, NY over the weekend.  She performed tracks from her new album, “Pageant Material,” which was just released last month, along with hits from the Grammy winning “Same Trailer, Different Park.”  We love Kacey’s style – her set was made to look like a sunset over the Texan desert, complete with neon cactus lights.  Her 5 piece band wore their signature light up suit jackets, and played everything from the steel guitar to the upright bass to the banjo.   They joined Kacey at the front of the stage at the end of the evening for “My House,” doing a little do-si-do.

P1290578

Throughout the evening, Kacey showed off her vocal range and clever songwriting skills.   Other highlights of her set included a country version of TLC’s “No Scrubs” and a cover of Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart,” which Kacey penned.  She also filled the audience in on the inspiration for some of the tracks on her new album.  When she was 11 a crazy stage mom called her a “dime store cowgirl,” which Kacey ended up turning into a song.  She gave a  shout out to her “momma” who was in attendance.  We’re sure that even though Kacey’s “not Pageant Material” she’s still proud!

P1290540

The crowd was singing along to every word, even the newer material.  Kacey took time near the end of the set to individually point out and thank fans in the crowd (by name!)   Some had made her unique gifts, others had been to countless shows, and a young girl had asked Kacey to sign her guitar before the show.

P1290633

She closed out the show with an encore that began with a solo acoustic performance of “Cup of Tea” before her hit “Follow Your Arrow.”  Kacey came back out wearing light up boots for a country version of “These Boots Are Made For Walking” which had the whole venue rocking.   She thanked the crowd one final time and wished them safe travels before doing an acapella version of “Happy Trails” with her band.

Kacey Musgraves Debuts “Biscuits” Video

Kacey is on a roll and her brand new video for “Biscuits” is nothing short of a warm fluffy appetizer for her brand new album “Pageant Material” out on June 23rd!  As usual, we love Kacey’s style (check out her band’s light up suits!)  The video is a throwback to old school variety shows, or as Kacey describes it “Hee Haw meets Pee-wee’s Playhouse meets Wes Anderson.”  Watch it below!
