2014 Albums Of The Year

Taylor Swift wrote an outstanding piece in the Wall Street Journal over the summer about the future of music, where she wrote that “people are only buying [albums] that hit them like an arrow through the heart or have made them feel strong or allowed them to feel like they really aren’t alone in feeling so alone.”  We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.  Here are the albums in 2014 that hit us like an arrow through the heart.

1. Dan + Shay – “Where It All Began”
It’s rare and special to find an album where you listen to each and every song, and can sing along to from start to finish.  This album was by far our most played of the year, and the soundtrack to our 2014.  We’ll be able to look back at this year as “where it all began” for Dan + Shay, who have a very, very bright future ahead of them.  We can’t wait to see what’s next for the talented duo, starting with their 2nd major headlining tour in 2015.

2. Sam Hunt – “Montevallo”
We were lucky to have downloaded a copy of the “Behind The Pines” mixtape before Sam exploded over the summer with the release of his hit single “Leave The Night On.”  He released his full length debut, “Montevallo,” in October, opening at the top of the country charts, and third overall.  Sam’s unique style makes us excited about music.  His blend of a 90s R&B sound with country storytelling blends perfectly with Sam’s southern drawl, deep voice, and spoken lyrics.  He’ll be selling out arenas one day.

3. Hunter Hayes – “Storyline”
A sophomore album is always tricky, especially when your debut was nominated for a Grammy and countless other awards.  But Hunter managed to knock it out of the park.    The album is a more collaborative effort than his first, on which he played every single instrument.  Hunter’s music grabs you from the first listen.  We love how Hunter brings this album to life on tour, with unique arrangements for each song.   He’s the rare musician who makes his live show a full experience that stays with you long after the show.

4. The Strypes – “Snapshot”
“Snapshot” is another debut album that immediately got our attention and made us wonder where The Strypes had been all our lives.  Evidently they’d been honing their skills at pubs across their native Ireland, where they learned to play loud, fast aggressive, and just damn good old fashioned rhythm and blues.  And they’re all still in their teens.  There are no filler songs on the album – it’s solid from start to finish.  If you ever have the opportunity to see The Strypes live, don’t miss it.  Seeing the album come to life on stage was one of our favorite moments of the year.

5. Austin Mahone – “Secret”
Technically this is an EP, but at 8 tracks, it’s *almost* an album.  We fell for Austin’s sound with tracks like “What About Love” and “Banga Banga,” but this EP, with it’s 90s pop influences, cemented Austin’s status as the one man boyband.  We’re obsessed with the Britney and *NSYNC-esque slow breakdown in the title track, “Secret,” and couldn’t stop listening to “Next To You” on repeat for days.  Austin’s working on his much awaited full length debut with the legendary Max Martin (who wrote basically every great 90s pop song you can think of), and we can’t wait for more!

6. Jesse McCartney – “In Technicolor”
Possibly the most underrated album on this list.  His newest single, “Punch Drunk Recreation,” is a pop masterpiece.  Armed with a Justin Timberlake sound, and retro look, JMAC outdid himself with this album.  “In Technicolor” is one of those albums that will always be in style.

7. Nick & Knight – “Nick & Knight”
We admit that we’ll probably love anything that involves our favorite boybands – especially when two of our favorite members team up.   But Nick Carter and Jordan Knight’s album is a fun R&B/pop album worth checking out.

8. 5SOS – “5SOS”
It’s a safe bet that 5SOS are going to be extremely monumental in bringing pop punk back to a radio station near you!  We’ve had the band’s debut album on heavy rotation, and we don’t think we’ll stop playing it any time soon.  Also, can people please stop referring to them as a “boyband?”  These guys have the heart, drive, and sound to be restore Warped Tour to the glory days of 2006.

9. The Vamps – “Meet The Vamps”
While we had to wait for this album to be officially released in the United States, it was worth the wait!  The Vamps have an acoustic pop sound that makes you want to dance around your living room singing at the top of your lungs.

10. Walk The Moon – “Talking Is Hard”
With it’s December release, Walk The Moon’s sophomore album “Talking Is Hard” barely made our list.  The Ohio band celebrated by live tweeting with fans the first listen of the album, divulging secrets like “there’s a mess up in this part of the song” to “the weird lyrics are from this member!”  Walk The Moon are taking the album on a full headlining tour in the spring.  It’s not too late to hop on the dance jam bandwagon.

The Friday Five: Best Concerts of 2014

We definitely shattered our record for most concerts attended in a single year in 2014.  While we loved each and every show, and it was nearly impossible to narrow it down to 5 favorites, here are the ones that stood out.

1. Hunter Hayes – 24 Hour Road Race – Palace Theatre – Stamford, CT
We ended up seeing Hunter more than any other artist this year – 7 times in total.  Impressive, considering on his past tours he came nowhere near NYC so we had no hopes of attending.  Hunter, if you’re reading this, please keep coming to New York.  We love you.  Of all the shows, among them the We Are Not Invisible Tour, Tattoo (Your Name) Tour, Arthur Ashe Kids Day, and so on, the most memorable was definitely the 24 Hour Road Race.  True, it was a short concert, but the record-breaking goal gave an added level of excitement, and now we can officially say we were part a Guinness World Record.  Oh, but we can’t forget that time he performed “Storm Warning” right in front of us…

2. Austin Mahone – MTV Artist To Watch Tour – Hammerstein Ballroom – New York, NY
We also had a hard time deciding which Austin show to pick, but this show wins since it was Austin’s first big headlining tour.  This show earned him his nickname of the “one man boyband,” due to his on point choreography.  We don’t have many videos of Austin performing, because it’s literally impossible to not dance along, but we managed to get one at his Mets Post-game concert later in the year.

3. Dan + Shay – Where It All Began Tour – Highline Ballroom – New York, NY
“Where It All Began” is hands down our favorite album of 2014.  While we saw Dan + Shay for the first time on the We Are Not Invisible Tour with Hunter Hayes, this was our first time seeing them play with a full band.  We were blown away by how passionate and talented they are, and how much they genuinely love performing.  Dan + Shay are so much fun to see live (seriously, the entire audience sings every word), and they make it special every time we see them.  We can’t wait for their next headlining tour in 2015!

4. 5SOS – Stars, Stripes & Maple Syrup Tour – Best Buy Theater – New York, NY
This might get the prize for one of the hottest concerts of 2014.  We were shocked when we scored a pair of tickets to this show! It had been such a long time since we went to a “pop punk” show that this finally made us remember why we fell in love.  5SOS have such great energy and they put on an incredible show to the sold out crowd.  Calum, Luke, Ashton, and Michael owned the stage and had everyone singing along to every word, even though the band had yet to release their album in the US.

5. The Strypes – Music Hall of Williamsburg – Brooklyn, NY
Whenever we write about The Strypes, we feel like nothing can do justice to how insanely talented and incredible these guys are.  All four members hail from Ireland and are under the age of 20, yet they play some serious rhythm and blues.  We had never really seen grown men fangirl until this concert.  That’s how good these guys are.  We were floored by their musicianship, and some absolutely insane harmonica solos.

Bonus: 106.1 BLI’s Summer Jam – Nikon Jones Beach Theater – Wantagh, NY
This gets the runner up place because of it’s awesome lineup: Austin Mahone, Cody Simpson, New Hollow, Midnight Red, AJR, and so on. Summer Jam definitely had something for everyone! The number of acts and the variety contributed to the “festival” feeling of this show, along with bonding with the people sitting around you for the entire day.  We hope Summer Jam will be back next year!

Hunter Hayes Kicks Off The Tattoo (Your Name) Tour in NYC

Hunter Hayes kicked off his Tattoo (Your Name) Tour last night with a wild card show in New York City.  We’d like to think we’re at least partially responsible for this show, since we asked Hunter for a headlining NY show the last time we saw him, but really we have to thank Nash FM and all of the passionate country fans in the city for this one.

P1050131 - Version 2

We love watching Hunter perform because of the passion and energy he has on stage.  You can tell how much he absolutely loves what he’s doing, and how much he appreciates it.  (As he said, “I’m so happy even one person showed up tonight!”  And the Best Buy Theater was packed).  We’re also consistently impressed by his musicianship – his live shows always include extended guitar solos, jam sessions, and multiple instruments. (After all, he can play over 30 of them).

P1050116 - Version 2
In a Wild Card show, anything can happen, and of course the opening night of a tour is always special as it all comes together for the first time. Hunter is great at interacting with the crowd – he stopped to take a few selfies with fans in the front row, and even left the stage during the encore to say hello to the crowd on the floor.  But the biggest surprise of the night came when he read a fan’s poster that said “Hunter, can I sing with you?”  To which he said, “Sure, come on up!”  The lucky fan (“Miss Helen”) joined him onstage for “Everybody’s Got Somebody But Me,” perfect for a singalong.

P1050296
The Tattoo (Your Name) Tour also has an interactive element – after all, YOU are the most important part of the show.  Hunter teamed up with Glow Motion to create custom wristbands for the show.  You’re given one when you enter the venue, and have to activate it using the Hunter Hayes App.  We highly recommend downloading the app BEFORE getting to the venue.  You will need to use the wifi to activate the wristband, and having the app already downloaded will save you a lot of time (and internet use, especially in an arena with 1000s of others also trying to get the app!)  The wristbands glow red when you receive them, and will turn green once activated.   If you’re having trouble activating it, find someone with a green glowing wristband!  You have the option to keep the wrist band after the show, with a $10 donation to the USO, which Hunter is supporting during this tour.

P1050924
The wristbands lit up in tune with many of the songs, playing off the lights on stage and changing colors to the beat.  It was fun to see the light show extended through the entire crowd, not just on stage.  Our only advice?  Put your hands up!  You’re at a concert, and it’s a lot cooler when everyone can see you light up like the fireworks flying on the fourth of July.

P1050911
The Railers and Dan + Shay will be joining the tour starting October 30th.  Check out all of the Tattoo (Your Name) Tour dates HERE and get to a show near you!  A tour lineup doesn’t get much better than this.

Hunter Hayes’ Next Single: Tattoo!

It’s official!  The second single off of Hunter Hayes’ new album “Storyline” is “Tattoo!”   Hunter performed the song on the CMT Awards this week. This is one of our favorite tracks off the album, and is sure to be one of the biggest songs of the summer!

As if we weren’t excited enough about one Hunter performance at the CMT Awards, he also teamed up with John Legend and Jennifer Nettles for a special arrangement of “All of Me,” done by the man himself.   We’d be totally okay if Hunter arranged more songs on the radio. And we love how into the performance he is, as always!   Watch Hunter’s rehearsal session for the performance below.

The Friday Five: Memorial Day Playlist

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!  We’re sure many of you (including us) are traveling for the long weekend, so here is our playlist of the songs we plan to drive around blasting to celebrate the official start of summer.

1.  Austin Mahone – “Next To You”
Austin just released this track from his debut album “The Secret,” out next week!  And we’ve been listening to it nonstop. (Literally like 10 times in a row).   He’s said that his album was influenced by the boy bands of the 90s, and it’s evident in this track.  We can’t wait to see what moves Austin the one-man boy band has planned for this one!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNHds5irF0k

2. Dan + Shay – “Sway”
We heard this unreleased track at the Dan + Shay + You acoustic session, and found ourselves instantly swaying and singing along.   Dan and Shay said this song, which they played here for the first time ever, would likely be on their next album.  Lucky for you (and us) we caught it on video!

3.  The Vamps – “Somebody To You”
As soon as we heard this song, we had a feeling it would be The Vamps’ next single.  And we were right!  What we weren’t expecting is for Demi Lovato to be featured on the track.  They’ve teamed up for what’s sure to be a mega-hit for the British band.  Hopefully all the radio play this song is getting will lead to the long awaited US release date for The Vamps album!

4. Hunter Hayes – “Tattoo”
We cannot say enough good things about Hunter Hayes.  Not only is he extremely talented (he can play over 30 instruments) he’s also kind and humble.  We love this track off of his new album, “Storyline,” which is likely to be the second single off the album.  This song will stick with you,  even the first time you hear it…just like a tattoo!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ak-T-JS05xE

5. AJR – “After Hours”
Their first single “I’m Ready,” is on track to be a big hit this summer, but we love all of AJR’s songs, especially this track off of their “I’m Ready EP.”  It’s fun, catchy, and has a horn section.  We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: AJR’s unique sound just makes us excited about music.  We can’t wait for their debut album due out later this summer!

Hunter Hayes’ “Storyline” Is Out Now!

Hunter Hayes’ sophomore album, “Storyline,” just debuted at #1 on the Country Charts & #3 overall!  It’s his highest charting album to date, and his second #1 on the country charts.   It’s also one of our favorite albums of the year this far.   On his self-titled debut, Hunter recorded every instrument and vocal himself.  (He plays over 30 instruments).   For “Storyline,” it was a more collaborative process, as Hunter recorded with his touring band:  Sam Ellis, Devin Malone, Matt Utterback, and Steve Sinatra.   Check out our track-by-track review!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOL02udbPeI

“Wild Card”
What a fun way to open a record!  This uptempo song is definitely one of our favorites on this album.  It’s the perfect opening number too, as we saw during our Storyline release week shows!  The song is a nice reminder to always be yourself – you never know who loves your little quirks!

“Storyline”
The title track for Hunter’s sophomore effort was actually written pretty late in the writing process but it’s a great concept of living one’s life – like it’s a story that’s still being written!

“Tattoo”
Likely the second single off the album, Hunter plays this as part of the encore on the “We’re Not Invisible Tour.” Even the first time hearing it, you find yourself singing along. And we basically haven’t stopped singing or listening to it since our first Storyline release week show!   This should be a big summer hit for Hunter!  If it does well, he said at his iHeartRadio show that he’ll get a tattoo of “your name.”

“Still Fallin”
Every album needs a love song! Hunter’s songwriting is definitely showcased in this song. Everyone who has ever been in love can totally relate to what he’s singing about – being with someone for so long and still falling in love with them every minute of every day.

“Invisible”
The first single released from the album is an anthem for anyone who has ever felt powerless and invisible.  The song is especially powerful and moving when the whole arena is singing along.

“You Think You Know Somebody”
If you ever had any doubts as to Hunter’s talent just watch his guitar solos in this song. This is definitely “as angry as it gets” on this album, as Hunter likes to say.  (Hunter’s angriest song would actually be “More Than I Should” – you can literally feel it from the first note he plays)

“Flashlight “
Hunter said this song was written as a follow up to “Faith to Fall Back On.” It’s definitely one to remind you there’s a light at the end of every tunnel and that no matter how dark it gets, there are people right next to you ready to help you find your way.

“Secret Love”
The anthem for every band member that’s ever been told to lie about having a girlfriend (fyi we all know the truth anyway so might as well just be honest). Hunter sings about a secret relationship which just makes us wonder who it could have been (we’re a gossip free zone so we’ll leave the guesses to you!)

“Nothing Like Starting Over”
This track is kind of the anthem for everyone who has ever let out a huge sigh of relief for starting over. Hunter really nailed it with this song, too.

“If It’s Just Me”
We always think this is Dan+Shay when the song starts, but once we realize it’s Hunter, we understand why they’re touring together.

“Love Too Much”
In a world where showing love is a delicate balance, Hunter croons “You can never say love too much”. Hunter is definitely a “lover not a fighter” and that is displayed in his ballads. Who doesn’t love a guy that’s not afraid to show his sensitive side!
