The Friday Five: Memorial Day Playlist

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!  We’re sure many of you (including us) are traveling for the long weekend, so here is our playlist of the songs we plan to drive around blasting to celebrate the official start of summer.

1.  Austin Mahone – “Next To You”
Austin just released this track from his debut album “The Secret,” out next week!  And we’ve been listening to it nonstop. (Literally like 10 times in a row).   He’s said that his album was influenced by the boy bands of the 90s, and it’s evident in this track.  We can’t wait to see what moves Austin the one-man boy band has planned for this one!

2. Dan + Shay – “Sway”
We heard this unreleased track at the Dan + Shay + You acoustic session, and found ourselves instantly swaying and singing along.   Dan and Shay said this song, which they played here for the first time ever, would likely be on their next album.  Lucky for you (and us) we caught it on video!

3.  The Vamps – “Somebody To You”
As soon as we heard this song, we had a feeling it would be The Vamps’ next single.  And we were right!  What we weren’t expecting is for Demi Lovato to be featured on the track.  They’ve teamed up for what’s sure to be a mega-hit for the British band.  Hopefully all the radio play this song is getting will lead to the long awaited US release date for The Vamps album!

4. Hunter Hayes – “Tattoo”
We cannot say enough good things about Hunter Hayes.  Not only is he extremely talented (he can play over 30 instruments) he’s also kind and humble.  We love this track off of his new album, “Storyline,” which is likely to be the second single off the album.  This song will stick with you,  even the first time you hear it…just like a tattoo!

5. AJR – “After Hours”
Their first single “I’m Ready,” is on track to be a big hit this summer, but we love all of AJR’s songs, especially this track off of their “I’m Ready EP.”  It’s fun, catchy, and has a horn section.  We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: AJR’s unique sound just makes us excited about music.  We can’t wait for their debut album due out later this summer!

The Friday Five: Our Favorite “Dancing With the Stars” Contestants

In honor of Monday’s “Dancing With the Stars” finale, and our man James Maslow making it  to the finals, for this week’s Friday Five we’re looking back at our favorite DWTS contestants!

1. James Maslow
We cannot say enough good things about James, and are so happy to see him in the finals! He’s consistently improved week after week, and is such a passionate performer.  We’re glad everyone can see what us Big Time Rush fans have known all along!  Now if James could just take his new dance skills on the road on another BTR tour…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TPi7KC-5F0

2. Lance Bass
The last time we were this invested in DWTS was the season of Lance Bass and Cody Linley in 2008.  We’ll never forget Lance’s iconic Jitterbug, where he lost his shoe in the finals but still managed to come in 3rd place!  (He should have won)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lZWS-d6s9hg

3. Cody Simpson
Oh, Cody.  You left way too early, but at least we got this “Surfboard” dance before you went!  We’re looking forward to seeing him back on the finale – we hear he’s been working on something amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye2EHFarePQ

4. Joey McIntyre
Boy band members make the BEST contestants.  They have the moves, know how to charm a crowd, and have fangirl voting power.  We welcome any and all current and former boy band members to join the cast.  (Other former DWTS boy banders include Joey Fatone and Drew Lachey)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O_mj9PMsCJw

5. Aaron Carter
Aaron oh Aaron, what are we going to do with you?  Partner Karina Smirnoff managed to keep Aaron focused enough to make it to week 8!  He’s definitely got the moves and made each dance fun to watch.

Bonus: Cody Linley

And in case you were wondering what Cody Linley has been up to since DWTS, he released a single called “Breathe” in 2010.  You’re welcome.

The Friday Five: Our Favorite Tour Lineups

There is nothing better than seeing your favorite artist on tour.   Except when two or more of your favorites team up – then it’s pretty much guaranteed to fall into the best concert EVER category. Or as NKOTBSB billed it:  One Night.  One Stage.  Once in a Lifetime. (or in our case, 3 times.)  Here are some of our favorite tour lineups!

1.  NKOTBSB (New Kids on the Block & Backstreet Boys)
Basically the greatest tour of all time.   Sure anything with these two acts would be amazing.  But the way the show was arranged, with alternate medleys of songs from each group, kept the audience thrilled from start to finish. And they played every song you’d ever want to hear – just giving the fans what they want.  If you’ve never seen Backstreet Boys perform “Everybody” live, you’re missing out! The choreography, set list, stage, everything about this tour was amazing.  It took everyone back in time , be it 1989 or 1999.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzxMh-hiUKU

2.  The Best of Both Worlds Tour (Jonas Brothers, Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus)
It’s been years and we still aren’t sure how we managed to snag tickets to this one (as we say in our Fangirl Handbook, we refuse to buy resale tickets!)  But we were there, on the floor, and it was even 10 times more awesome than it looked in the 3D movie. We’d seen Jonas Brothers a couple of times before, but this tour was when they really hit their stride and exploded. And this tour was truly a once in a lifetime event.  Especially now that Hannah Montana is dead.

3. The Package Tour (New Kids on the Block, 98 Degrees & Boyz II Men)
We love NKOTB and their boy band posse. They recruited newly reunited 98 degrees and Boyz II Men for the appropriately titled “Package Tour.” Once again, NKOTB nailed the set, stage, choreography, etc. They’re older now, as are their fans, so they’re at a point when everyone can just relax, have fun and have the time of their lives.  It’s a beautiful thing.  We’re so glad NKOTB reunited and are better than ever!

4. Summer Break Tour (Big Time Rush, Victoria Justice, Jackson Guthy & Olivia Somerlyn)
The perfect name for the perfect summer tour.   We’re huge Victoria and BTR fans so we were thrilled to see them team up!  Openers Jackson Guthy and Olivia Somerlyn were fun opening acts who had us singing and dancing along by the third go round.  BTR doesn’t get enough credit for being a legit boy band, and for bringing back the genre. We’re convinced NKOTBSB and all these amazing things wouldn’t have happened without BTR.  These guys are talented singers and dancers and totally bring it each night. It doesn’t hurt that they share a choreographer with NKOTB – boy band master Kevin Maher.  Now if the New Kids could just recruit Big Time Rush for their boy band posse…

5. Matchbox Twenty & Goo Goo Dolls
We’re 90s fan girls so when we heard Matchbox Twenty and Goo Goo Dolls, two of our favorite bands ever, would be touring together we HAD to go. Mostly because if you had told us 15 years ago we would have the chance to go and didn’t, we would have been very upset with ourselves. Luckily we decided to go and it was more than worth it. Both acts played very solid sets including all of their old material.   It was just as great in 2013 as it would have been in 1996. If you are/were a fan of either group, we highly suggest seeing them live at least once.

You can see New Kids on the Block, Backstreet Boys, and Goo Goo Dolls on tour this summer!

The Friday Five: Songs of the Summer

It’s only the second day of May, but after a brutal winter in NYC we’ve been dreaming of summer for weeks!  We can’t wait for outdoor concerts and trips to the beach, or in the event of Summer Jam and any shows at Nikon Jones Beach Theater – both!    Here are the songs we are loving right now, our soundtrack to the Summer of 2014.   All of these artists are on tour this summer, so check them out!

1.  Dan + Shay –  “Show You Off
The country duo’s debut album is the perfect summer soundtrack.  It makes us want to drive around with the windows down, sipping sweet tea with the wind blowing in our hair.  “Show You Off,” Dan+Shay’s second single, is catchy and refreshing like a cool drink of water in the summer, better than the other side of the pillow.  Check out all of their upcoming tour dates!

2. AJR –  “I’m Ready
We’ve had “I’m Ready” on repeat for months now, but AJR’s single is climbing the charts and is sure to be one of the biggest hits of the summer!  Their debut album, which brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met wrote, produced and recorded in their living room, is expected to be released late Summer.   You can catch them on tour at several radio festivals and opening for Lindsey Stirling this summer!  Watch our interview  with AJR here!

3. Austin Mahone – “Till I Find You
This is possibly the best summer ever for Mahomies!  Austin’s debut album, “The Secret,” is being released May 27th, followed by appearances at Summer Jam and a headlining tour with The Vamps!  He’ll also help kick off the Today Show Toyota Summer Concert Series on Memorial Day!

4. Cody Simpson – “Surfboard
There are some artists we always associate with summer, and Cody is one of them!  We first saw him opening for Big Time Rush at Jones Beach on their 2012 tour.  His laid back surfer vibe is perfect for his new single, “Surfboard.”  He’ll be at Summer Jam and is heading out on a European tour shortly after.  Stay tuned for the dates!

5. Hunter Hayes – “You Think You Know Somebody
We’re constantly impressed by the multi-talented Hunter Hayes.  In case you’re still inclined to refer to him as “the country Justin Bieber,” just check out his guitar solos in this live performance of “You Think You Know Somebody!”   He is by far one of our favorite acts to see live, and we could not be more excited for his new album, “Storyline,” out next week!  If you have the opportunity to see him live, go!  He takes every song to the next level. P.S. Hunter if you’re reading this, play a show in NYC – we love country, too!

The Friday Five: Birthday Songs for Fangirls

In honor of one of our birthday’s today, check out our favorite non-traditional birthday songs.  Did you have any idea NKOTB and *NSYNC had original birthday songs?!  Well now you do.  Enjoy!

1.  “Birthday” by Selena Gomez
We find ourselves singing this song basically every day of the year, and are obsessed with Selena’s old school chair dance choreography to this song.  “Tell ’em that it’s my birthday when I party like that!”

2.  “Happy Birthday to You” by New Kids on the Block
The falsetto in this is just beautiful.  NKOTB is the gift that keeps on giving.

3.  “Birthday” by Katy Perry
Katy just released the official video for “Birthday” last night (great timing!).  She crashed a few birthday parties in disguise, with hilarious and adorable results.

4. “Not Your Birthday” by Allstar Weekend
You can always party like it’s not your birthday.

5.  “Happy Birthday” by *NSYNC
Again, who knew that *NSYNC had a birthday song?!

Bonus:  “Happy Birthday” performed a capella by *NSYNC.  Because who could ask for a better present?

Check out all of our Friday Fives!

The Friday Five: Our Favorite Tennis Players

Changing things up for this week’s Friday Five!  This week we’re looking at our favorite tennis players.  If there is anything we like more than music, it’s tennis.  We’ve previously discussed how tennis is the ultimate fangirl sport.  Not only are these athletes extremely fit and excellent at what they do, but it seems like there is a requirement to be good looking to play in the ATP tournaments.

1. Grigor Dimitrov – @grigordimitrov
We like to call Grigor our “Bulgarian bon-bon” (sort of like Viktor Krum to Hermione Granger). It’s not surprising that his nickname is “baby Fed” because of his skill and precision during the game. Dimitrov’s one handed back hand is something to envy, as well!  He isn’t just good at tennis, he’s also really entertaining on Twitter. Grigor likes to share adorable photos of himself with puppies, enjoying the flowers, as well as this gem:

https://twitter.com/GrigorDimitrov/status/455057165678813185

2. Richard Gasquet – @richardgasquet1
Here is another player with a really beautiful backhand (yes, backhand…..that’s all we’re implying….no innuendos here!!) Gasquet is French and plays the sport with an elegant flair.   Simply put, he’s just a beautiful player to watch.  When he gets frustrated, he throws his sweaty socks on the court because he can.  (At least he’s not smashing racquets?)  Sadly he doesn’t use Instagram as much as Dimitrov.

Richard Gasquet backhand gif

3. Rafa Nadal – @rafaelnadal
“For me, it will be a tough match for sure, no?”  Rafa is so humble about his game, even in first round matches where he is sure to bagel his opponents.  Rafa always fights his hardest and plays like it’s the final of a grand slam. He also gives the best acceptance speeches and press conferences, for sure.  And then there’s that Armani commercial where he just takes off his suit and puts on some jeans, because why not, no?

4. Ryan Harrison – @ryanharrison92
This kid is the next Andy Roddick, at least we think he has the potential! He needs to bring Andy back to be his coach (but it seems like Ryan is taking cues from Andy already). It also kind of freaks us out how much Harrison looks like Ryan Atwood from The O.C., or as We like to call him, Chino.  Can you tell who’s who?

5. John Isner – @johnisner
JOOHNNYYYY!!!  At nearly 6’10”, we love that he plays tennis and didn’t go into basketball. John is super loveable and watching him play is always a joy, even during stressful tie-breakers.  Which he tends to play.  A lot.  During on court interviews, he literally dwarfs any other player and interviewer. We love when he teams up with fellow American & BFF Sam Querrey for doubles!  Go Quisner!

The Friday Five: Songs On Repeat This Week

1. Jackson Guthy – Pretty Lady
We were introduced to Jackson Guthy on the BTR Summer Break Tour last summer and after sitting through his set two times, we were totally into every single song by the third go around! His songs are infectious and catchy. Get to the 5SOS tour early because Jackson is definitely an opening act you’ll want to know. Grab a copy of Jackson’s new song “Young & Single” on iTunes now!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLYq59d_LGA

2. The Vamps – Girls On TV
At their first headlining show here in NYC, The Vamps played a few new songs from their debut album “Meet The Vamps” (out now in Ireland, the UK and most of Europe on Monday!). One of those was Girls On TV. It’s got a reggae feel, but still displays The Vamps acoustic driven sound. Pick up a copy of “Meet The Vamps” on iTunes UK now! Check out all of their signings around the UK this week HERE!

3. Cody Simpson – Surfboard
One of our favorite stars on this seasons Dancing With The Stars, Cody Simpson, released his new single “SURFBOARD” to great reviews. It’s been on constant repeat in the fangirl office since it dropped. Pick up a copy of “SURFBOARD” on iTunes and don’t forget to watch and vote for Cody on DWTS every Monday.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye2EHFarePQ

4. Austin Mahone – MMMYeah
We can’t say enough awesome things about Austin Mahone but we’ll keep trying. The one man boyband recently celebrated his 18th birthday by announcing his debut album “The Secret” as well as announcing a headlining tour featuring The Vamps and Fifth Harmony. Tickets are on sale now and with every ticket order, you receive a digital copy of Austin’s album!

5. 5SOS – She Looks So Perfect
5 Seconds Of Summer kick off their North American headlining tour today and what better way to celebrate their EP debuting in the top spot on the Billboard Digital Albums Chart! Like Billboard, we totally dig their power pop punk sound and we can’t wait to see them in NYC. Pick up a copy of the US Edition of the “She Looks So Perfect EP” on iTunes and sing along all summer long!

The Friday Five: New Yorkers Like Country Music Too

Happy Friday!  Last week we gave you our favorite imported bands.  This week, we’re taking things a little closer to home and showing our favorite country artists at the moment.   Make sure you tune in to the Academy of Country Music Awards on Sunday April 6th!  An open letter to all of you:  there are lots of country fans in NYC, and we would greatly welcome any of y’all round these here parts.

1.  Dan + Shay
This is a huge week for the duo – not only did their debut album, “Where It All Began,” come out on Tuesday, it’s been #1 on the iTunes country charts all week!  Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney also made appearances on Good Morning America and Ellen this week, and will top it off with Sunday’s ACM Awards, where they are nominated for Vocal Duo of the Year.  Pickup a copy of their album on iTunes or Amazon!

2. Kacey Musgraves
Kacey’s no stranger to country music fans, but she made a huge splash at this year’s Grammy Awards where won she performed her powerful song “Follow Your Arrow.”  In light up country boots to boot.  Her album, “Same Trailer, Different Park,” won Best Country Award at the Grammys.  Get it now on iTunes!

3.  Hunter Hayes
We have to give Hunter full credit for getting us into country music.  His self-titled debut is on the top of our favorite albums of any genre, and he’s one of our favorite artists to see live!   We can’t wait to catch him on the We’re Not Invisible Tour with Dan + Shay in May!   You can catch Hunter performing his latest single, “Invisible,” at the ACM Awards!  Pre-order his new album Storyline, out May 6th!

4. Sam Hunt
The Georgia native played football for the University of Alabama before moving to Nashville to pursue a career in songwriting.   He’s already co-written songs for Kenny Chesney and Keith Urban, and is working on his debut album due in 2014.  His single “Raised On It” is on iTunes now!  He’ll be playing a few shows with Hunter Hayes and Dan + Shay this summer!  Check out his official website to download his “Between the Pines” acoustic mixtape for free!

5. Needtobreathe
They’re probably the most traditional country artist on our list, but when we saw them open for Taylor Swift on the Speak Now Tour a couple of years ago, we instantly loved their sound.   Their new album, “Rivers in the Wasteland,” will be out on April 15th but you can pre-order it now and get 4 tracks instantly, including “The Heart!”

The Friday Five: The Best New Imported Bands

It’s time for another Friday Five!  This week we’re looking at our favorite freshly imported bands, hailing from the UK, Australia and even New Zealand.

1. The Vamps
Shout out to Ciara Bravo for introducing us to The Vamps about a year ago on Twitter!  We clicked on the video for “Can We Dance” and loved their fun sound and video.  They recently had a sold out show at NYC’s Gramercy Theatre, their first US headlining show ever.  Their debut album will be released on April 14th in the UK.  We’re still waiting on a US release date, but we hear The Vamps will be back stateside in May!  Stay tuned for more details.  You can get their single, “Wildheart,” on iTunes now!

2. The Strypes
We just discovered The Strypes last week, when we randomly decided to look them up after seeing them in a BBM ad in Rolling Stone.    The quartet hails from Ireland, and although they are just 16-18 years old, their music sounds way beyond their years.   They remind us of acts like The Hives and The Strokes, and draw their influences from The Yardbirds and early Rolling Stones.  Of course, we realized that we missed their sold out show at NYC’s Bowery Ballroom by a mere 5 days.  We hope they’ll be back soon!   They just booked a performance on The Late Show with David Letterman, and their debut album, “Snapshot,” was just released in the US on March 18th.  Download it now on iTunes or Amazon!

3. 5SOS
As said on last week’s New Girl, “Are you Australian, or from heaven?”  5SOS hails from Australia, and sold out their first US headlining tour in a matter of minutes.  The Stars, Stripes and Maple Syrup Tour kicks off in April! With influences (and friends) like All Time Low, Green Day, and Blink-182, 5SOS are definitely the pop punk band we’ve been looking for since 2008.  We can only hope they strike gold in America! We think that pop punk is more about how you view life and less about your melodies and bass lines. The common thread and bottom line: they don’t take life too seriously and sometimes (read: 82% of the time) it’s totally okay to act like you’re 17 and hear “You should start acting your age” from your friends…to which you should always answer “What’s my age again?”

4. Bastille
This UK rock band have been making a huge splash Stateside. Their fourth single, “Pompeii” has been taking over the radio, spawning covers left and right. With a reissue of their debut album, Bastille are poised to be the big rock group for 2014. The band start a US spring tour in three days, starting in Chicago and ending their run at The Governors Ball in NYC in June. Get all the dates HERE and pick up a copy of “Bad Blood” on iTunes now!

5.  Titanium
Otherwise known as New Zealand’s First Boy Band.  Feeling left out of the fine world of  boy bands, a NZ Radio Station, The Edge, held a competition to form the country’s first.   Contestants went through a “boy band bootcamp,” where they practiced their dance moves, harmonies, and likely saying their band name in unison.  Titanium later broke a record by being the first act in New Zealand to have 3 singles in the Top 40 at the same time – just shows you how deprived they were of the magic of the boy band!  And we’re talking legit boy bands here.  Titanium even hooked up with America’s boy band, Big Time Rush, to write a few songs for their album.  We’re still holding out for a Titanium / Big Time Rush tour in the US!

Bonus:  Flight of the Conchords, because it’s impossible to write about the music of New Zealand without thinking of the country’s “almost award winning 4th most popular folk music duo.”

The Friday Five: Albums We’re Looking Forward To in 2014

It’s Friday and that means it’s time for The Friday Five! This week, we’re picking five upcoming albums that we are totally excited to hear. So, let’s get started!!!

1. AJR – Title and Release Date TBD
AJR’s unique sound makes us excited about music again! The indie pop band, comprised of brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met, are the true definition of an independent, DIY artist.  We’ve loved every song we’ve heard from them so far (seriously, it’s impossible to pick a favorite), and can’t wait to hear more!  They’re tentatively naming their debut album “Living Room,” as much of the album was written, produced and recorded from their parents’ living room in NYC.  The album should be released sometime this Spring.  Are you ready?

While you wait for the album, make sure to download their EP 6foot1!

2. Hunter Hayes – “Storyline” (due May 6th)
Hunter is another artist who makes us excited about music again. The multi-talented singer not only wrote or co-wrote every track on his self-titled debut, he also played the 30+ instruments used in the recording.  We had the opportunity to attend his “Encore” release concert at Webster Hall last summer, and were blown away by his musicianship.   We’re thrilled to finally be seeing Hunter live again on the “We’re Not Invisible Tour,” and for his new album, “Storyline!”   And have you heard about how you can be a part of Hunter’s attempt to break the world record for most concerts in 24-hours?

You can pre-order “Storyline” now and get an instant download of the tracks “Invisible” and “Wild Card!”

3. Dan + Shay – “Where It All Began” (due April 1st)
We hadn’t heard of country duo Dan + Shay until they were announced as the opening act on Hunter Hayes’ “We’re Not Invisible Tour,” but it was love at first listen when we heard their single “19 You + Me.”  The duo met last year in Nashville, and started writing together the next day.   If the rest of their album is anywhere near as good as the tracks they’ve released so far, including “What You Do To Me” and “Show You Off,” we may have our new favorite summer album.

You can pre-order their debut album, “Where It All Began,” now and get an instant download of all 3 tracks!

4. Austin Mahone – Title and Release Date TBD
It’s hard to believe that after releasing so many hit singles, we STILL don’t know when Austin’s debut album will be released.  Austin just wrapped up his first headlining tour with MTV, and we’re hoping we’ll have an announcement for a new tour and album before the summer!

Be sure to follow Austin on Twitter for updates and get his latest single, “MMM Yeah” on iTunes!

5. The Vamps – Title TBA  (due April 14th in the UK; US Date TBD)
Unfortunately for now there is no US release date for this album, but we are eagerly awaiting the release date!    We love The Vamps energetic sound and after a very solid set at their headlining show in NYC, we’re looking forward to hearing more!

While we wait for an official US release date, you can pickup their single Wild Heart on iTunes!
