The Friday Five: CMJ Artists To Watch

CMJ Music Marathon is a week long festival that literally takes over any and every music venue in NYC.  It’s an entire week filled with seminars on the music industry, concerts, and new emerging artists playing pop up shows all around the 5 boroughs.   It’s worth checking out a showcase or two, and we suggest staying to catch all of the artists – you never know, you might just find your new favorite band!  One of us worked the festival last year and it was one of the most fun experiences we’ve ever had!  Here are our top five picks for bands to catch at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon.

1. Born Cages
Coming back for round two at CMJ, Born Cages are ready to hit the ground running with their latest single “Rolling Down The Hill”.  The band are playing a few shows for CMJ this year so be sure to catch them this year.

2. We Are Stations
Playing their first CMJ festival this year, We Are Stations aren’t afraid to give it their all.  Armed with a Foo Fighters sound and positive songs that can turn that frown upside down, this is a show you don’t want to miss at CMJ this year.  When we spoke with the band over the summer, they teased each other as well as a possible EP!

3. The Ugly Club
If you like Walk The Moon, there’s a chance you might like The Ugly Club.  Despite their name, the band is actually really easy on the eyes but that’s just an added bonus.   Spot one of their stickers around the five boroughs and tweet a picture of it- there could be a surprise in store for you!

4. The Rare Occasions
Continuing the grunge trend in 2014, The Rare Occasions are here and they’re going to take over your playlists one song at a time. The bands latest single is huge and we will definitely have this in heavy rotation in the fangirl offices!

5. Bailen
Bailen (previously The Bailen Brothers), is made up of twin brothers, their sister, and a family friend and honorary Bailen.   They first caught our attention when they opened for CMJ alumni AJR earlier this year.   If you like infectious melodies and harmonizing siblings, Bailen is definitely worth checking out.

The Friday Five: 5 Songs Currently On Repeat

Whether we hit “replay” on our AppleTV to rewatch Sam Hunt’s live performance videos, or someone catches us humming 5SOS’s new single, we all have those songs that we can’t stop listening to.   This week’s Friday Five is a short playlist of the songs we just can’t seem to get enough of!

1. Jake Miller – First Flight Home
On the heels of his new single “First Flight Home”, Jake Miller announced that he would be playing at Miami’s Y100 Jingle Ball 2014 – something he says has been on his bucket list for a long time! Watch the official video for “First Flight Home” below.

2. Sam Hunt – Break Up In A Small Town
Sam Hunt is being billed as a “soon to be superstar”, and when we caught him opening for Kip Moore on the CMT “Up In Smoke Tour” we fully agreed.  Sam is set to play Emporium on Long Island in November and he’s one artist we will gladly go to “almost the Hamptons” for because he’s THAT good!

3. 5 Seconds Of Summer – Good Girls
Jingle Ball is the perfect exposure for the Australian pop punk band to potential fans that might not realize they actually do like guitar driven music!  5SOS are scheduled to perform at a bunch of annual jingle ball festivities around the United States in anticipation of their huge summer 2015 headlining tour!

4. North Of Nine – We Ride
Jackson Guthy’s new band North Of Nine hit the ground running with a single and a video for “We Ride”.  While the band aren’t touring just yet, they’re looking to the future and something big could be on the horizon for them.

5. Born Cages – Rolling Down The Hill
Local indie band, Born Cages are a fangirl favorite and not just because of their sleek sound, churning out catchy song after catchy song. Their latest single “Rolling Down The Hill” is getting added to a bunch of radio stations and it’s definitely a fun song during live shows!  Born Cages are slated to play two showcases at CMJ in New York this October.

Artist To Watch: Jack Skuller

When we heard about a young singer being compared to Buddy Holly, we knew we had to check him out.  18-year-old New York native Jack Skuller is being hailed as both “a mini Jack White” and a “modern day Buddy Holly,” and is a gifted singer-songwriter who is skilled on both guitar and harmonica.  We love his classic rockabilly sound.  Listen below!

Jack Skuller has racked up quite the impressive resume so far, which includes releasing an acclaimed 7″ at the tender age of 14, produced by Daniel Ray on Bar/None Records.  He also went on a 14-city tour around the United States backed by Radio Disney,  and won the 2014 Holly Prize from the Songwriter’s Hall Of Fame, as a tribute to Buddy Holly.

His new singles, “Can You See Me” and “Hard To Want” were co-written with Chris Dell’Olio (of the Tall Pines) and produced by GRAMMY-nominated Joel Hamilton (The Black Keys, Pretty Lights, and Tom Waits).   Jack Skuller has certainly gotten the industry stamp of approval, proving that he’s got the chops to bring rock and roll back for good.  (Does anyone else miss good old fashioned guitar on the radio, or is it just us?)  And who doesn’t love a harmonica solo?  We could totally see Jack touring with The Strypes.

You can see Jack Skuller in NYC at The Bowery Electric on November 8th in NYC.  Click HERE for tickets and show information.

THE HEYDAZE Release New Single “Don Juan”

NYC’s THE HEYDAZE just released their brand new song “Don Juan!”  The track explores the lifestyle of the legendary stud.  While THE HEYDAZE haven’t been around for that long (their first show as a band was back in April),  they’ve already proven themselves to be masters of crafting catchy, playful tunes, with a penchant for lyrical puns.  Just like all of their songs, the melody gets stuck in your head and you find yourself singing it at the most inopportune times.  But you keep playing it again because it’s just that good!

Listen to “Don Juan” below on SoundCloud.

You can catch THE HEYDAZE on tour this Fall with Timeflies.  Check out all of the dates HERE!  “Like” THE HEYDAZE on Facebook for more music from the band for free!  Or if free music isn’t your thing, you can download from iTunes as well.

The Railers Debut Single “Kinda Dig The Feeling”

Rising country band The Railers just released their first single “Kinda Dig The Feeling!”  You might have heard the track on tonight’s “Nashville,” or on country radio, where it’s been gaining airplay.  Listen below and pickup a copy on iTunes now!

We first discovered The Railers when they opened for Hunter Hayes on his 24-Hour Road Race and instantly we were hooked by their on stage energy, musicianship, and catchy melodies.  They’re also a lot of fun live, and great at interacting with fans, be it with the crowd at a show or on Twitter.  We’re looking forward to seeing them again on the Tattoo (Your Name) Tour with Hunter Hayes & Dan + Shay this Fall!  Check out the dates HERE!
