Our Favorite Concerts of 2016

We can’t believe 2016 is almost over!   It was a year full of fangirling and lots of amazing concerts.   While it’s always hard to pick favorites, here are some of our favorite shows of 2016!

Mixtape Festival – Hersheypark Stadium – Hershey, PA – August 2016
This festival had everything – boybands,  matching camo parachute cargo pants, oversized bib overalls, harmonies that you can’t find anywhere else, and of course the best fans ever!  NKOTB just get better and better with age.  98 Degrees wore camo cargo pants and sang a TRL medley.  O-Town crushed their set (yes, they played “Liquid Dreams”) and wore overalls and tie-dye.  Paul Abdul nailed every single dance move in her first show on 25 years (and told everyone about the Total Package Tour way before it was announced).  Boyz II Men brought down the house with their beautiful harmonies.

Dan + Shay – Playstation Theater – New York, NY – December 2016
Dan + Shay are one of our favorite artists to see live, because they bring so much joy and energy to the stage.  The “Obsessed” Tour was their second headlining tour, in support of their new album, and they owned the stage like they had been doing this forever.  Dan + Shay are having so much fun on stage, you can’t help but join in.  The whole show is one big singalong from start to finish.

Mariah Carey – Beacon Theatre – New York, NY – December 2016
We didn’t realize we were such big Mariah fans, until we saw her perform at the Beacon (and at Divas Live!) and fangirl cried a little.   This is our new Holiday tradition.

Cam – Highline Ballroom – New York, NY – October 2016
We were so excited to see Cam back in NYC on her first headlining tour!  She had the coolest set of the year, and told the best stories in between songs.  Cam is such a genuine talent that we knew the world couldn’t ignore since the first time we saw her opening for Dan+Shay.  Her voice is amazing, her songwriting is super fun (listen to her song “Fireball”) and heartwarming.

Dierks Bentley – Highline Ballroom – New York, NY – May 2016
We had just caught the opening night of Dierks’ big “Somewhere On A Beach” Tour at PNC Bank Arts Center a couple of weeks prior.  It was amazing to see Dierks again in such an intimate venue.  His “Last Call Ball,” in celebration of the release of his new album, “Black,” was a writers round with his collaborators.  Each took a turn telling the story behind the song and performing songs from the album and other hits they had written.   Did we mention we got to be approx 5 feet away from Dierks for this show?

Rooney – Webster Hall – New York, NY – October 2016
We are SO EXCITED that Rooney is back and on tour. Their new album, “Washed Away,”  was one of our favorites of the year, and we got to see them live 2 times in 2016!  The show in October at Webster Hall was our favorite, mostly because Robert asked everyone to come in Halloween costumes and the band dressed as vampires.   Good music + Halloween = happy fangirls.

Jake Miller – Highline Ballroom – New York, NY – October 2016
Jake definitely had a good thing going at Highline Ballroom.  His “Overnight” EP release show was one big party from start to finish.  Jake blessed NYC with an early bit of news about his “Overnight Tour” at this show and we’re so glad he’s coming back in 2017 because we need more Jake in our lives!! His voice keeps getting better and better and let’s face it – he’s so good with his fans that there’s no way we can’t love him just as much back!

p1580995

MAX – Beacon Theatre – New York, NY – February 2016
Speaking of Jake Miller, we caught his upcoming “Overnight” Tour mate, MAX, at the Beacon Theatre opening for R5.   He is insanely talented,   and we were blown away by his live performance.  We’ve had his album on repeat ever since.  If you’re going to see Jake this Winter, make sure you get there early to catch MAX’s set!

P1410073

Kacey Musgraves – Town Hall – New York, NY – December 2016
We were stoked that Kacey’s Christmas tour had a stop in NYC!  It was just as sparkly and fun as you would imagine.   Can we make this a Holiday tradition, too?

Good Charlotte – Webster Hall – New York, NY – April 2016
*FANGIRL SCREAMING*   Okay, now that we’ve had some time (alright like 8 months) to process this show, we still can’t believe just how incredibly grateful the guys of Good Charlotte are for their fans to come back after a long hiatus and still care about the little boys from Waldorf and their dumb punk music.  We grew up listening to GC, their lyrics are melodies are ingrained and practically tattooed on our brains.  When a band truly takes the time to acknowledge how awesome their fans are and to be so good to their fans, heck yeah we’ll keep coming back for more.  This show was wild from start to finish with the crowd singing literally every single word to every single song – even deep cuts and new tracks.

Moose Blood – Studio at Webster Hall – New York, NY – July 2016
These guys really know how to put on a show!  Just before their sophomore album, “Blush” came out, Moose Blood put on a wild and crazy club show in NYC’s Studio at Webster Hall.  The show was completely sold out and we can bet that people from the other rooms of Webster Hall were coming downstairs to see what all the ruckus was about. What they found were four boys from Kent and about 300 fans screaming the words, all of us having the best night of our lives!  This show also took us about 6 months to process how amazing these guys are.

Dolly Parton – Forest Hills Stadium – New York, NY – June 2016
This was the first concert we went to at the newly renovated Forest Hills Stadium.  As huge tennis and music fangirls, just being there was exciting!   And Dolly was incredible.  She has such a gift for storytelling and performing, and the crowd was having a blast.

Hunter Hayes – Pennysaver Ampitheater – Selden, NY – August 2016
We sadly only got to see Hunter once this year, but he blew us away as always.   He played some amazing new songs, which he released later in the year.  Fingers crossed we’ll be seeing more of Hunter in 2017!

Weezer – Nikon Jones Beach Theater – Wantagh, NY – June 2017
Weezer has been on our concert bucket list for ages, and we finally got the chance to see them over the Summer!  And they did not disappoint.

weezer2016

Housing Works Writers Round – New York, NY – August 2017
This was one of the coolest shows we went to this year.  Housing Works hosted a benefit concert, a Nashville songwriters round.   Walker Hayes, Drake White, Sean McAnally, Matt Ramsey, Trevor Rosen, and Brad Tursi each took turns playing stripped down versions of the many hits they had written.

Cam’s “Burning House” Tour Hits Highline Ballroom in NYC

We saw Cam for the first time in 2014 when she opened for Dan + Shay on their first headlining tour at Highline Ballroom in NYC.  Her set was so much fun (one of our favorite openers ever!) and we knew we’d be hearing much more from her in the future.  Since that show, Cam signed with Sony, released her debut album “Untamed,” and had her first #1 single, “Burning House.”    Cam came full circle last week when she came back to Highline Ballroom on her first headlining tour, the “Burning House” Tour.

p1590738

Cam played every track from “Untamed” during her set.  The enthusiastic crowd sang along from start to finish.  We love that Cam took the time to introduce every track, telling the crowd anecdotes and the inspiration for writing each song.  She has a knack for storytelling, evident in both her songwriting and her on stage banter.  Every story was heartfelt or hilarious, or a little bit of both.  She reminded us of another blonde country star: Dolly Parton!

p1600058

Cam had one of the coolest sets we had ever seen, turning the stage into a beautiful house in the woods complete with forest creatures and flashing stars.  It got even cooler when a blacklight made it seem to glow in the dark about halfway through the set.

p1590719

Cam played some new material during the show, including the head-banging “Man Hunt,” which showed that Cam can totally rock.   She closed her set with the hilarious “Fireball Whiskey,” which Cam had actually pitched to the company.   She said they declined since the track “does not promote responsible drinking.”

p1600140

The night ended with Cam’s breakout single, “Burning House,” which turned into a very loud singalong.  The “Burning House” Tour runs through December.  Click here for tour dates!  Don’t miss your chance to see this rising star.

Dierks Bentley Kicks Off “Somewhere On A Beach Tour” in Holmdel, NJ

Summer concert season is officially here!  Dierks Bentley got the season off to a rocking start last night when the first stop on the “Somewhere On A Beach” Tour hit the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ.  He set a very high standard for the rest of the shows we’ll go to this Summer.  It was a high energy show from start to finish, and his 90 minute set seemed to fly by!  Dierks gets an A+ in fan interaction, constantly hi-fiving and pausing for selfies during the set without missing a beat.

P1520412

We got an exclusive first listen of Dierks’ new album, “Black,” in his mobile listening tour bus.  (yes, we fangirled hard at getting to be on an actual tour bus).  If you’re a black card member you can get on the bus too!  You can pre-order the album and get a card at the show if you don’t have one already.  We pre-ordered “Black” without hearing a single track from the album, knowing it would be awesome, and it even exceeded our expectations.

dierksblackcardbus

Opening acts Tucker Beathard, Cam, and Randy Houser set the tone for the evening with their lively sets.  Cam’s set showed the range of her music, from fun tracks like “Go Get ‘Em Cam!” and “Country Ain’t Never Been Pretty,”  to her emotional hit “Burning House” and new single “Mayday.”  The singalong and cheering during Randy’s performance of “Like A Cowboy” was one of the loudest and craziest we’ve ever heard.  New Jersey country fans, we are proud.

P1520379

On to the main event:  DIERKS!!   He encouraged the crowd to tip it on back and get a little sideways, free and easy.   The crowd was certainly there to get their good time on.  His set included hits from all of his albums along with new material from “Black.”  Some die hard fans (ourselves included) already knew the words to the new tracks like “What The Hell Did I Say” and even the title track which was as steamy live as the brand new video!

P1520862

One of the more emotional moments during the show came during “I Hold On,” which is in memory of Dierks’ father.  As the crowd loudly sang along, he told them that was always his favorite part of the night.  Later, Dierks decided to get a little closer to the audience and jumped from the stage into the middle of the crowd to make his way to a stage in the back.  He was joined by Cam and Randy for “Take It Easy.”  From the main stage to the B stage, Dierks’ knows how to get every single part of the crowd involved and  keep them entertained even if he’s not right in front of them.

P1520905

We almost don’t want to ruin it for you, so maybe stop reading this if you’re going to the tour.  During the encore Captain Dierks came out on an actual Dude Air plane.  Cam and Randy joined him on stage one last time, before members of the crew ran out, some in their Riser flight attendant outfits.  After the show, Dierks stayed on stage and signed anything people handed or tossed to him for a good 10 minutes as “Wanted Dead or Alive” was pumping through the venue. As if we didn’t love him enough already.   Check out the dates for the “Somewhere On A Beach” tour HERE and get your tickets now!

2. Kacey Musgraves – “Dime Store Cowgirl”

The Friday Five: 2015 Albums of the Year (Country)

It was way too hard to narrow down all of our favorite albums this year to just 5, so we split between pop and country.  Here are our favorite country albums that were released in 2016!  (Okay so we picked 6, deal)

1.Thomas Rhett – “Tangled Up”
Thomas rode the momentum of his hit single “Makes Me Wanna” and the funky vibes of “Crash And Burn” into an an album full of soulful, R&B tinged jams, all country at heart.  “Die A Happy Man,” which Thomas wrote for his wife Lauren, will make you cry; “Vacation” will make you dance, and “I Feel Good” will turn any day around.

2. Hunter Hayes – “The 21 Project”
2015 was the year of trying new things for Hunter Hayes, including how he released music.  After dropping digital singles throughout the Summer, Hunter released a 3-disc set featuring 7 songs as acoustic, studio and live versions.   “Saint Or A Sinner” is one of our favorite songs of the year, no matter how we listen to it.

3. Kacey Musgraves – “Pageant Material”
Kacey’s latest album sparkles just as much as she does on stage.  She might not be “Pageant Material,” but she sure is great at crafting clever lyrics that anyone can relate to.  Each track has a story of it’s own and they all come together to create one of our favorite country albums of 2015.

4. A Thousand Horses – “Southernality”
What do you get when you mix Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers Band, and a whole lot of Southern moonshine? A Thousand Horses released the best “throwback” country rock album this year that we’ll be spinning for years to come.  Standout songs are the title track, “Trailer Trashed,” and “Travelin’ Man.”

5. Old Dominion – “Meat and Candy”
Even the band has commented on the strange name of their debut album but “Meat and Candy” is actually a fitting title for an album that has lots of sweet jams along with some more substantial tracks.  Their live show is not to be missed.

BONUS: Cam – “Untamed”
Released last week, Cam’s album barely made the cut but it’s one of the strongest debut albums we’ve heard in a long time!  We’re still kicking ourselves for not picking up one of those cute yellow flash drive bracelets when we saw Cam open for Dan+Shay!

Lineup Announced for 2016 Southern Ground Festival in Charleston

Let’s be real – concerts make us hungry.   But more often than not, we’re forced to eat bland, overpriced venue food.   Which is why we love the idea behind the Southern Ground Festival: it celebrates both the music and the food of the South!   The festival was started by Zac Brown in 2011, and will be held for the 5th time on April 16-17th 2016 in Charleston, South Carolina.  The lineup includes an exciting lineup of country artists (literally it’s like all of our favorites) and will feature gourmet concessions from local vendors.

Cam Releases Debut EP, “Welcome To Cam Country”

Hot off the release of her single, “My Mistake,” rising country star Cam just released her first EP!  “Welcome to Cam Country” is a preview of Cam’s upcoming album on Sony Nashville.  All tracks were co-written by Cam, and produced by Jeff Bhasker and Tyler Johnson.  (They’ve worked with artists like Bruno Mars, Taylor Swift, and Ed Sheeran…just to name a few)  We instantly fell for Cam’s sound and energetic personality when we saw her open for Dan + Shay on tour last year.  Her music has a bit of a 90s country vibe, with clever, relatable lyrics.  Check out the tracklisting below and pickup a copy of the EP on iTunes now!
