The Friday Five: 2015 Albums of the Year (Country)

It was way too hard to narrow down all of our favorite albums this year to just 5, so we split between pop and country.  Here are our favorite country albums that were released in 2016!  (Okay so we picked 6, deal)

1.Thomas Rhett – “Tangled Up”
Thomas rode the momentum of his hit single “Makes Me Wanna” and the funky vibes of “Crash And Burn” into an an album full of soulful, R&B tinged jams, all country at heart.  “Die A Happy Man,” which Thomas wrote for his wife Lauren, will make you cry; “Vacation” will make you dance, and “I Feel Good” will turn any day around.

2. Hunter Hayes – “The 21 Project”
2015 was the year of trying new things for Hunter Hayes, including how he released music.  After dropping digital singles throughout the Summer, Hunter released a 3-disc set featuring 7 songs as acoustic, studio and live versions.   “Saint Or A Sinner” is one of our favorite songs of the year, no matter how we listen to it.

3. Kacey Musgraves – “Pageant Material”
Kacey’s latest album sparkles just as much as she does on stage.  She might not be “Pageant Material,” but she sure is great at crafting clever lyrics that anyone can relate to.  Each track has a story of it’s own and they all come together to create one of our favorite country albums of 2015.

4. A Thousand Horses – “Southernality”
What do you get when you mix Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers Band, and a whole lot of Southern moonshine? A Thousand Horses released the best “throwback” country rock album this year that we’ll be spinning for years to come.  Standout songs are the title track, “Trailer Trashed,” and “Travelin’ Man.”

5. Old Dominion – “Meat and Candy”
Even the band has commented on the strange name of their debut album but “Meat and Candy” is actually a fitting title for an album that has lots of sweet jams along with some more substantial tracks.  Their live show is not to be missed.

BONUS: Cam – “Untamed”
Released last week, Cam’s album barely made the cut but it’s one of the strongest debut albums we’ve heard in a long time!  We’re still kicking ourselves for not picking up one of those cute yellow flash drive bracelets when we saw Cam open for Dan+Shay!

Lineup Announced for 2016 Southern Ground Festival in Charleston

Let’s be real – concerts make us hungry.   But more often than not, we’re forced to eat bland, overpriced venue food.   Which is why we love the idea behind the Southern Ground Festival: it celebrates both the music and the food of the South!   The festival was started by Zac Brown in 2011, and will be held for the 5th time on April 16-17th 2016 in Charleston, South Carolina.  The lineup includes an exciting lineup of country artists (literally it’s like all of our favorites) and will feature gourmet concessions from local vendors.

It’s the dust in the air and the freedom everywhere

The Friday Five: Country Groups

It’s officially Summer, y’all!  Now that the weather is heating up, Summer tours are underway (our first is Lady Antebellum at Jones Beach!) we can’t stop listening to country-not that we want to.  It was difficult to pick just five this week but these are our picks for up and coming-fresh faced country groups that are ready to storm the charts with their perfect harmonies and wild on stage energy!

1. Old Dominion
We were lucky enough to catch Old Dominion at Joe’s Pub in NYC a few weeks ago and we were blown away with how good they are to their fans.  They’ve written for so many other country artists but these guys are ready to break out on their own and show the world what they can do!

2. The Railers
The Railers are one of the most fun groups we’ve seen both acoustically and plugged in! They really bring down the house with on stage energy every time we’ve seen them.  The Railers are taking their show on the road with tour dates around the US including NYC’s first ever Farmborough Festival!

3. A Thousand Horses
NashFM called A Thousand Horses “one of the tallest bands in country” and after catching their private show in NYC, we know why.  Between the height, the luscious hair, and the insane talent, these guys are revving up their engines- ready to kick it into overdrive before Summer is over!

4. The Cadillac Three
The band may be called Cadillac Three but these guys turn their set all the way up to 11! Loud, raucous, and ready to party, this group blend classic rock with country that will be the soundtrack to getting’ your Southern on this summer.

5. Natalie Stovall And The Drive
Natalie has been fiddlin’ around in music since she was ten years old, her on stage arena ready energy is what is getting this group noticed.  Natalie was recently named one of CMT’s “Next Women Of Country” and it’s a no-brainer – Natalie Stovall and The Drive are here to stay!
