“Pop Nation” Musical Based on 90s Pop Scene Opening in New York

We all know the 90s were the greatest musical era of all time, especially for pop music.  We had Backstreet Boys, we had *NSYNC, we had Britney, we had 2ge+her, we had it all.   So we were thrilled when we heard about a new musical opening in New York that is set in the 90s pop scene.  “Pop Nation,” opening in November,  “puts you behind the scenes as boy bands and bubblegum divas blast off on a whirlwind ride to the heights of pop royalty.”

The show is described as a “social theatrical experience,” mixing the feel of a musical with a nightclub.  We’re not sure exactly what this means, but they had us at “90s boybands” and we’ll definitely be checking this one out.   “Pop Nation” features original music by Damon Intrabartolo, choreography by RJ Durell, who has worked with Madonna and Britney, and production design by Kevin Antunes, JT’s go-to.

Previews for this new musical begin November 14th at the Hudson Hotel in New York City.  Tickets are available now on the official “Pop Nation” website.

The crowd was especially awesome during Sam Hunt’s set at the Best Buy Theater – nearly everyone was singing along.  Not bad for a newcomer whose first album isn’t even out yet (Montevallo is due on 10/27!)  You won’t want to miss this one – if the last show was any indication, this guy will be playing much bigger venues next time he’s in town.

The Friday Five: Classic Weezer Songs

Weezer’s 9th studio album, “Everything Will Be Alright In The End,” is out on Tuesday, October 7th.  Let’s rock out like it’s 94 and take a look back at some of their biggest hits.

1. “Buddy Holly” – 1994
One of the coolest music videos of all time – we still aren’t sure what sort of wizardry is happening here.

2. “Say It Ain’t So” – 1995
The song that defined the 90s alternative genre.

3. “Island In The Sun” – 2001
This song will forever remind us of the Olsen twin movie of the same name, where this track was played approximately every 5 minutes.  We hope Weezer got royalties for each use of the song!  (We estimate about 350 times in the film).

4. “Beverly Hills” – 2005
The perfect song to drive around with your windows down, as we did for the entire summer of ’05.

5. “(If You’re Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To” – 2009
Relationship Goals: This song
Bae Goals: This song
Everything: This song

Bonus: “Back To The Shack” – 2014
An instant classic.

Robert Schwartzman’s California Roll Tour Rolls Into NYC

Robert Schwartzman’s NYC stop on The California Roll Tour was delayed for two days – Robert’s bus broke down in Connecticut and couldn’t roll anywhere.  An early reminder of one of the (few) drawbacks about a venue on wheels – the show literally can’t go on without the bus!  The bus was eventually fixed, and parked in NoHo on a crisp Fall evening.  We’re hoping after this one small setback, the bus will make it back to CA problem free! (So far so good.)

Leading up to the concert, there was an extra layer of excitement: for the first time in a while, we had literally no idea what to expect from a tour.  Would the bus be moving?  What will the seats be like?  How many people will be there?  What songs will he play?  Where will the bus be?  (Emails are sent out the day before/day of the show with the location).   And for people who go to a LOT of concerts such as ourselves, it was refreshing to have something new to look forward to for a change.

The bus was by far the most intimate venue we’ve ever been in – two rows of seats that held a dozen or so fans, plus Robert, the bus driver, and the tour manager. The show was friendly and relaxed, much like Robert himself.  He played a mix of songs, which fans had the chance to vote for online, and were welcome to shout out requests throughout the evening.  The set included Rooney classics, and some of Robert’s solo material, including tracks from his last album “Double Capricorn” and the “Palo Alto” soundtrack.  Basically, it was one big singalong.  And it was awesome.
Robert gave personal anecdotes about each song, and told us that the songs from the first Rooney album always remind him of NYC, as he wrote them when he lived in the city for college.  He told us his favorite songs to play are the ones that the fans want to hear – we’re sure passerby on the street were wondering just what was happening inside bus as it rocked side to side during “I’m Shakin’.”

We also got to hear a preview of some of the new music Robert has been working on, for an album due out sometime next Spring.  All we can say is WOW.  We were blown away by the tracks, and it’s so good to hear some more classic pop-rock sounds (we miss hearing guitars and instruments!!)   Get ready for this album.

If you can make it to a stop on the California Roll Tour – GO!  It’s such a unique and memorable experience, and Robert is just plain awesome.  Check out all the upcoming dates HERE.

While his next tour will likely be back in traditional venues, Robert said he’s not getting rid of the bus.  He hopes to keep the tradition alive with some after parties, and more singalongs.  Knowing Robert, we’re sure he’ll come up with something else equally awesome.  And we can’t wait.

Artist To Watch: Jack Skuller

When we heard about a young singer being compared to Buddy Holly, we knew we had to check him out.  18-year-old New York native Jack Skuller is being hailed as both “a mini Jack White” and a “modern day Buddy Holly,” and is a gifted singer-songwriter who is skilled on both guitar and harmonica.  We love his classic rockabilly sound.  Listen below!

Jack Skuller has racked up quite the impressive resume so far, which includes releasing an acclaimed 7″ at the tender age of 14, produced by Daniel Ray on Bar/None Records.  He also went on a 14-city tour around the United States backed by Radio Disney,  and won the 2014 Holly Prize from the Songwriter’s Hall Of Fame, as a tribute to Buddy Holly.

His new singles, “Can You See Me” and “Hard To Want” were co-written with Chris Dell’Olio (of the Tall Pines) and produced by GRAMMY-nominated Joel Hamilton (The Black Keys, Pretty Lights, and Tom Waits).   Jack Skuller has certainly gotten the industry stamp of approval, proving that he’s got the chops to bring rock and roll back for good.  (Does anyone else miss good old fashioned guitar on the radio, or is it just us?)  And who doesn’t love a harmonica solo?  We could totally see Jack touring with The Strypes.

You can see Jack Skuller in NYC at The Bowery Electric on November 8th in NYC.  Click HERE for tickets and show information.
