SecretFangirls.com Interview Seaway

If you haven’t heard of Seaway yet, you’re about to!  We first caught the band opening for Sorority Noise and Knuckle Puck almost a year ago and we’ve been hooked on their catchy pop punk tunes ever since.  Singer Ryan Locke, guitarist/vocalist Patrick Carleton, guitarist Andrew Eichinger, bassist Adam Shoji, and drummer Ken Taylor have perfected the art of crafting hook filled songs like “Slam”, “Airhead”, and “Trick (So Sweet)” that you can’t help but sing along to!  They also put on a super fun, high energy live show that is not to be missed.

Hailing from Ontario, Canada, Seaway are currently on tour with fellow Canucks, Simple Plan in honor of the 15th Anniversary of “No Pads No Helmets…Just Balls.”  The tour officially kicked off in Florida last week and includes a stop in NYC on Saturday at Playstation Theater.  We can’t wait to hear them play their massive debut album front to back.  Catch us in the pit raging like our 13-year old selves would have wanted!

We had the chance to talk with Seaway guitarist Andrew Eichinger about what’s on their tour rider, and what to expect from the next Seaway album.  Read our interview with Andrew below!

SecretFangirls.com: You just kicked off the Simple Plan “No Pads No Helmets Just Balls” 15th Anniversary Tour for such an iconic pop punk album. What are you looking forward to most on this tour?
Andrew Eichinger: We’re really looking forward to playing in front of a ton of new people and doing our best to win them over. But it will also be very cool to see Simple Plan play that album front to back. Being from Canada, it was such a huge record for us when we were like 9/10 years old, so to be on this tour is one of those full circle moments for us and we’re super excited.

How would you describe a Seaway show in 3 words for those who haven’t seen you live before?
High Voltage Party

What are some “must haves” on your tour rider?
Nacho chips, queso and salsa. Not too spicy though lmao ;)~

Do you have any pre-concert rituals?
Not really. We’re pretty boring honestly. Usually just have a couple suds.

What artist have you or would you totally fangirl over if you met?
Shania Twain or Alanis Morissette.

The nostalgia is in full force with your album “Colour Blind” from the art to the sound.  What artists are your biggest influences as a band?
I think late 90’s / early 2000’s pop punk bands like Blink, Sum 41, New Found Glory and even Simple Plan are the obvious ones on that record because that’s the stuff that we grew up on. But we’re influenced by all kinds of different artists and bands on the pop and rock side of things that come out a little on Colour Blind and will continue to, on our next record.

You’ve been teasing photos from the studio lately, what can fans expect from a new Seaway album?
It’s hard to say right now but based on the songs we have it will be a natural progression from everything we’ve done in the past, but there will definitely be some new twists and turns in there as well.

Is there anything you’d like to say to your fans?
Shout out to the fans who are spending a little more than usual to come see us on this tour. It means a lot to us to have our fans there wildin out while we play in front of a sea of people that haven’t heard us before.

Jake Miller just dropped the music video for his new single, “Good Thing.”  The track is from the “Overnigh” EP, that Jake released back in October.  The video features Jake looking like a vintage movie star and dressed to the nines in the perfect white tux.  We love the classic look and style of the video!  Jake definitely has a good thing going on with his new music.  Watch the video below!

Fly By Midnight Cover “Everywhere” by Michelle Branch

When we heard that our friends in Fly By Midnight were covering Michelle Branch’s early 2000s hit “Everywhere” we couldn’t get the song out of our heads and they were simply everywhere to us.  They just released the video, shot on location in a laundromat complete with a classic boombox.  We love how Fly By Midnight put their own spin on the song – if we hadn’t spent a good portion of 2001 singing “Everywhere,” we would think it was a FBM track!   Watch the video below!

Love their version of the song?  You can download a copy of “Everywhere” from The Boombox Series by Fly By Midnight on iTunes now!

Friday Five: St. Patrick’s Day Songs

It’s Friday and it’s St. Patrick’s Day which means time for an Irish themed Friday Five!   While we probably won’t be joining the NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade festivities, we’ll just sit here wearing our green, and quietly wish Disney was playing “Luck Of The Irish” on TV tonight.  We struggled to pick just five songs to put on this list but we let the 4 leaf  clovers to work their magic. Celebrate St. Patrick and bring out your Irish side with these tracks!

NKOTB – “Hanging Tough”
Helloooo!! NKOTB wrote this to be the Boston Celtics theme song and to be Irish, you gotta be hangin’ tough!  On tour, the New Kids sample Dropkick Murphys as well for the intro so double yes!

Flogging Molly – “Drunken Lullabies”
As far as Celtic influenced bands go, Flogging Molly is a tried and true classic.  If you’re looking for something to get yourself in the spirit of the holiday, these guys are top notch!

Dropkick Murphys – “Shipping Up To Boston”
Whether you realize this song is by Dropkick Murphys or not, you have heard this song and we’re pretty sure you love it as much as we do. NKOTB sample this for the “Hanging Tough” intro on tour, athletes use it as their walk up song, and in numerous commercials.  This is the officially unofficial theme song for the city of Boston, MA. We rest our case.

B*Witched – “C’est La Vie”
Arguably one of the most underrated artists from the late 90s and early 2000s, B*Witched are still touring.  Currently, they are on tour in Australia with Atomic Kitten and Liberty X.  We had a hard time picking between “Rollercoaster” and C’est La Vie” but  that’s just life and this is just a classic song!

House Of Pain – “Jump Around”
It’s Friday, and it’s a holiday.  Go ahead, jump around.  We won’t judge you!  Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

AJR Play 1st Sold Out Hometown Show At NYC’s Gramercy Theatre

AJR have been killing it lately.  Their latest single, “Weak,” has gotten over 100 million plays on Spotify and is climbing up the charts.   Their first major headlining tour, the “What Everyone’s Thinking” Tour, has had sold out shows across the country.  The tour rolled into Adam, Jack and Ryan’s hometown of NYC over the weekend for a two night stand at the Gramercy Theatre.

AJR have played Gramercy Theatre in the past, but their show on Saturday night was their first ever hometown show that sold out. And it didn’t just sell out – the show sold out so quickly that a second date was added on Sunday.   How successful has the “What Everyone’s Thinking” Tour been?  They were nearly out of their stock of merch, with a few shows left to go!

If you’ve been to an AJR show, you know that things can “get weird,” as Jack told the crowd.  For their first big headlining tour, they brought out all the stops.  They are by far one of the most energetic acts we’ve ever seen on stage.  They honed their skills performing on the streets of NYC, where they learned how to win over a crowd. Jack never stops moving, flailing across the entire stage in a continual dance as he switches from playing the Maschine to the drums to the Melodica to the guitar.   All three brothers took turns playing the drums, even hopping into the crowd at one point.

One of the things we love most about AJR is how true they stay to themselves and to their music.   After playing “Let The Games Begin,” the band told the crowd how the music industry had tried to change them and told them they couldn’t do things.   “You can’t get that sound on the radio.  You can’t record in your living room.”  Even Jack’s hat was met by criticism.  Through it all, they stood by what they believed in.  We saw quite a few fans (including a mini Jack) rocking “the hat” in the crowd.

We love that AJR are confident in their sound and their growing fanbase proves that you don’t have to fit into a certain mold to make good music and connect with people. When they wrote the songs for their latest EP, “What Everyone’s Thinking,” they wanted to make songs that were very honest and the reaction has been unbelievable.

Adam told the crowd more about their songwriting process – the brothers write countless songs together, then let them sit for a few months.  The ones they like that “pass the test of time” get the go ahead, while others get shelved.  One track that has stood the test of time, and that the band still loves to play live is “Infinity.”  They also did a new rendition of fan favorite track “Woody Allen,” turning it into an acoustic song with a heavy kick drum.   Ryan said he was inspired to write the song after watching Woody Allen movies for film class: he wanted to capture that feeling of how he always gets the girl in the end.

They incorporated some of their remixes in the set, turning “I Got No Strings” and “Tiptoe Through The Tulips” into tracks you wanted to dance to.  They also created a “New York” remix on stage, breaking it down piece by piece to show the crowd how they create their unique sound.

AJR closed out their set with their breakout single, “I’m Ready,” which had the entire room dancing and clapping along.   They rolled out a giant banner printed to look like Jack’s Maschine, which he started to play.   The band came back out for one more song, their current hit “Weak.”  We got chills hearing every person in the room singing along.

It was by far the craziest AJR show we’ve been to!  The enthusiastic crowd knew every word,  loudly singing along from start to finish.  It’s amazing to see how far they’ve come (they’ve been performing together for 12 years!) and to see such an incredible response to their music.  There’s no one else quite like them.  AJR,  you just keep doing you.

Friday Five: Simple Plan Songs From NPNHJB

You will always love the music that you liked when you were 13.  This is one of the most true statements we have ever heard! Simple Plan, as bizarre as it sounds, has had a profound effect on us…well one of us anyway.  They’re the reason we picked up the guitar, the reason we wore those huge khaki shorts with tall tube socks, Vans, and Role Model clothing.  Yeah….we were super fangirls for SP, complete with an email address dedicated to Seb’s eyes!  We won’t get into that now though.  Here is our Friday Five favorite deep cuts from the Canadian band’s debut album “No Pads, No Helmets, Just Balls” which they’re currently playing in full on the 15th Anniversary Tour!

“Meet You There”  – This is one of the  songs on an album full of angsty emo teen songs. No matter where life takes us, we’ll always meet Simple Plan there.

“My Alien” – It seems like every good pop punk band need a song about aliens, space, and/or  girlfriends. SP hit all three targets.  Thy went and got the Astronaut kit so if you can provide the rocket, they’ll be with their beloved 4 leg/2 armed girlfriend again.

“You Don’t Mean Anything” – When your two favorite singers collab on a single, that’s definitely going to be your favorite song! Joel Madden from Good Charlotte lent his vocals to the third track on SP’s debut album and we’re still surprised this was never a single.

“The Worst Day Ever”  – If you thought “I’m Just A Kid” was emo, this song takes the cake for being one of the most emo songs we have ever heard.

“One Day” – The acoustic picking in this song sounds out of place with the rest of the album if you’re not looking at the big picture of early 2000s music. SP really are masters at their craft because if you just heard this song with no context or name attached, chances are you might not realize it’s the same band that wrote “I’m Just A Kid.”  This is still one of our favorite emo deep cuts, hands down!

Grab a copy of NPNHJB on iTunes or Amazon if you lost your copy, broke it from over playing it, or just want a digital copy.

Chase Atlantic Release “Into It” Music Video Via Snapchat

Chase Atlantic are the heart of what’s new and fun in music and they don’t shy away from unorthodox ways of doing things. The guys just released their new video for “Into It” on Snapchat which is pretty dang cool if you ask us!  When they announced their tactic early in the week, we weren’t quite sure what to expect or how that was going happen since Snaps only last for 24 hours max unless the person who posted them saves them. We knew that we had to follow the guys to get the full story!  Pun fully intended.

Brothers Mitchell and Clinton Cave together with their friend Christian Anthony were just teasing us with their Snapstory music video because they released the entire music video on Facebook shortly after and quickly racked up 5k+ views on it!

The guys edited all of their fun and rowdy Snap stories together from the past couple of months to their new single, “Into It.”  There are snaps from the studio, the guys hanging with Benji and Joel Madden and the MDDN Co management team, traveling to NYC, and even some live shots of the band performing.  We love the creativity behind this video and can’t wait to see what Chase Atlantic come up with next!  Watch the video below.
