Album Preview: For The Win “Heavy Thoughts” Out April 14th

San Diego’s own heavy pop punk band For The Win are set to release their most honest album yet this April.  “Heavy Thoughts” is due out April 14th on Artery Recordings and features the band’s most personal lyrics to date blended seamlessly with high energy instruments and vocal harmonies.  We got an early listen of the band’s new album and there’s no sign of a sophomore slump with For The Win!

The album kicks off with a declaration “This is a song for the beaten and broken,” and quickly shifts gears with guitars chugging alongside a steady drum beat on “Us Versus Them.”  Singer Kyle Christensen promises the listener doesn’t have to walk this world alone, which is the overarching message of this album.   Almost every song speaks from the heart about some of those thoughts that sit in the back of your mind all the time.  The first two singles from the album, “Crash And Burn” and “Dancing Shoes” show the dynamic writing both lyrically and musically from the band.

For The Win found the ideal balance between light pop sing along choruses and heavy breakdowns that we’re sure will get the crowd moving during their live shows.  There are a few stand out tracks on this album, “Nowhere To Run” and “How Can I (Get Back To You)” are two of them.  These are two of the more pop hook laden tracks on the album, but lyrically they have the right amount of weight to hold their own against the other tracks on a truly solid sophomore album.

For The Win showcase their softer side as well on the album with the closing track “Until The End Of Time.”   The final track starts as a slow acoustic jam questioning “Do I sit around and wait for change or move ahead to better days without you” and later moves towards a more bitter tone as the drums and a string section fade in.

All in all, these guys are proving that the next generation of melodic hardcore and pop punk are in very good hands. This is an album that not only passed the “driving test” (you know, the one where you plug in the aux cord and just drive aimlessly around town while blasting the album) but it also gets us excited for what’s next from For The Win!

Be sure to grab a copy of “Heavy Thoughts” when it drops April 14th on iTunes, Amazon, and through the band’s official webstore.  Pre-order bundles are available and feature exclusive merch and more!

Drawing North Drop “Stay”

Drawing North officially dropped their new single “Stay” just in time for Summer!  The brand new track is a departure from their previous sound but we are hooked on the catchy pop sound these guys are bringing over from Australia.

The single is the first since the band released of their first album “El Dorado” last September.  The new music is more electronic but keeps the dance-y pop influenced sound fans have come to love from Drawing North.

Listen to “Stay” by Drawing North on Spotify now!

Grab a copy of the single on iTunes or Amazon.

Steve Madden Music Announces Brooklyn Pop Up Show With PVRIS

Steve Madden Music just announced an exclusive pop up show in Brooklyn with Boston natives, PVRIS. For seven years, Steve Madden Music has hand picked rising artists to play special pop up shows in their stores. Eventually, the brand moved the shows to bigger venues like Music Hall Of Williamsburg and began holding the exclusive concerts monthly.  PVRIS will join the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Warpaint as part of this exclusive class of artists hand picked by one of the most iconic shoe brands.
PVRIS are the kind of band you stumble on through a friend and suddenly your life is divided in to two parts: before you knew about PVRIS and after.  Then you see them live and your life is divided again: before you saw PVRIS live and after.  Lynn Gunn, Alex Babinski, and Brian MacDonald put on a live show that is unlike any other – it’s electrifying, powerful, and yeah, pretty much life changing. They’ve been keeping a low profile while they work on the follow up to their breakthrough debut album “White Noise” that featured “St. Patrick” and “My House” and we hope they debut some new material at this once in a lifetime show!

Tickets for this pop up show will be available starting April 7th at 12noon EST.  They are free however they are on a first come- first served basis so you have to be quick!

Tennis Tuesday: News Roundup

This Week’s Tournament:
Davis Cup

Last Week’s Winner:
Miami Open – Roger Federer

Roger Federer Wins Sunshine Double
Roger Federer’s incredible comeback continues!  He pulled off the “sunshine double” (aka winning both Indian Wells and Miami) for just the 3rd time in his career, defeating Rafael Nadal in the Miami Open final 6-3, 6-4.   It’s Federer’s 3rd title of the 2017, and the 3rd time he’s played and defeated Nadal this year.  2017 has been a fun year for tennis, hasn’t it?   Federer did say on court that he’d be sitting out most of the clay season and his next tournament would be Roland Garros.

Davis Cup Quarterfinals This Weekend
The Davis Cup is back April 7-9!  The World Group Quarterfinals are taking place in venues across Europe and Australia.  We’re looking forward to the tie between the US and Australia as John Isner, Jack Sock, Sam Querrey & Stevie Johnson take on Nick Kyrgios, Jordan Thompson, Sam Groth & John Peers.

Australia (host) vs USA
France (host) vs Great Britain
Belgium (host) vs Italy
Serbia (host) vs Spain

The #NextGen is Coming
#NextGen ATP stars Sascha Zverev and Jared Donaldson were both impressive in Miami.  Sascha defeated John Isner (saving 3 match points) and Stan Wawrinka en route to the Quarterfinals, where he fell to Nick Kyrgios in one of the best matches of the Miami Open.  Jared Donaldson played his way through qualifying and made it to the 4th round.  He eventually lost to Jack Sock, but his run in Miami brings him to a career high of 75 in the ATP rankings.

Tennis Watching Etiquette
We’ve covered concert etiquette before, and after watching the match between Nick Kyrgios and Roger Federer last week, we feel the need to address tennis watching etiquette as well.  If you’re lucky enough to be watching a professional tennis match in person, here are some things to keep in mind.
1. Cheering in support of your favorite player is fine, but show some respect for the other player.  Calling out against them, cheering negative things, or playing linesman and calling close balls “out” is rude and distracting to both players.
2. Learn when to cheer and when to be quiet.  Generally speaking, if the ball is in play, that’s your cue to sit and watch.   Between points, cheering is welcome and encouraged!   But please do not applaud double faults and do not call out in between 1st and 2nd serves.
3. Wait for the changeovers to enter or leave your seats.  It’s distracting to both the players and the other fans in the stadium to have people constantly going in and out.
4. Enjoy points like this!
