Album Preview: We Were Sharks – “Lost Touch”

Our latest Artist To Watch, We Were Sharks are hitting the road early in 2018 to gear up for the release of their brand new album Lost Touch on February 23rd.  The album is called Lost Touch but We Were Sharks haven’t lost touch with the genuine feeling and joy that pop punk brings to the entire scene.

“Beyond Repair” kicks off the album like shattering the glass walls surrounding the album.  Lost Touch as a whole shows the obvious personal and musical growth of the band from their previous releases and brings them to the forefront of the genre.  We Were Sharks are poised to take their rightful spot on the list of our favorite releases for 2018 so far.

“Hotel Beds” is a stand out track with the bouncey scream along chorus and contrasting verses.  However, “Stay” is the pinnacle of the album.  Lyrically and musically, “Stay” is the closest the band comes to radio perfection on the album which should be more than enough to push them through to Summer song playlist domination.

Broadside’s Ollie Baxter brings his sugary sweet vocals on “Late Bloomer.”  The track centers on the topic of keeping a hold on things you loved when you were young.  Ollie brings that something we were missing and really catapults the album through to the end.

Lost Touch is a solid listen start to finish filled with odes to the glory days of pop punk and sing along choruses.  We can’t wait to see what the future holds for We Were Sharks!

Head To “Paradise” With Broadside

Broadside just released a brand new video for their latest high energy single “Paradise” and urge listeners to “Chase your paradise and value your time” in the title track to their sophomore effort due out June 16th.  The video perfectly encapsulates the band’s fun loving personalities in a beach-y inflatable filled video that takes a peek into their fans’ version of paradise.  Polaroids filter in and out throughout the video and are filled with beach scenes, mountain climbs, and family photos sent in by Broadside fans.  Taking their own advice, the band chased their own paradise by relocating to Los Angeles!

It’s clear these guys care about their fans and treat them as equals, not just fans.  Front-man Ollie Baxxter says “Life is a journey, and it should be documented and valued forever, so we wanted to give our fans an opportunity to share their version of paradise with us, and share their special moments in our music video. Thank you to everyone for letting us take a peek at your paradise.”

Album Preview: For The Win “Heavy Thoughts” Out April 14th

San Diego’s own heavy pop punk band For The Win are set to release their most honest album yet this April.  “Heavy Thoughts” is due out April 14th on Artery Recordings and features the band’s most personal lyrics to date blended seamlessly with high energy instruments and vocal harmonies.  We got an early listen of the band’s new album and there’s no sign of a sophomore slump with For The Win!

The album kicks off with a declaration “This is a song for the beaten and broken,” and quickly shifts gears with guitars chugging alongside a steady drum beat on “Us Versus Them.”  Singer Kyle Christensen promises the listener doesn’t have to walk this world alone, which is the overarching message of this album.   Almost every song speaks from the heart about some of those thoughts that sit in the back of your mind all the time.  The first two singles from the album, “Crash And Burn” and “Dancing Shoes” show the dynamic writing both lyrically and musically from the band.

For The Win found the ideal balance between light pop sing along choruses and heavy breakdowns that we’re sure will get the crowd moving during their live shows.  There are a few stand out tracks on this album, “Nowhere To Run” and “How Can I (Get Back To You)” are two of them.  These are two of the more pop hook laden tracks on the album, but lyrically they have the right amount of weight to hold their own against the other tracks on a truly solid sophomore album.

For The Win showcase their softer side as well on the album with the closing track “Until The End Of Time.”   The final track starts as a slow acoustic jam questioning “Do I sit around and wait for change or move ahead to better days without you” and later moves towards a more bitter tone as the drums and a string section fade in.

All in all, these guys are proving that the next generation of melodic hardcore and pop punk are in very good hands. This is an album that not only passed the “driving test” (you know, the one where you plug in the aux cord and just drive aimlessly around town while blasting the album) but it also gets us excited for what’s next from For The Win!

Be sure to grab a copy of “Heavy Thoughts” when it drops April 14th on iTunes, Amazon, and through the band’s official webstore.  Pre-order bundles are available and feature exclusive merch and more!

For The Win To Release “Heavy Thoughts” Album on 4/14

For The Win have been keeping busy in 2017 so far and they’re ready to kick it into high gear!  The guys just announced that they will be releasing their brand new album, “Heavy Thoughts” through Artery Recordings on April 14th.  The band’s second single off of their highly anticipated second album, “Dancing Shoes” comes out of the gate at a blistering pace and hits the listener a little harder than the last single, “Crash and Burn.”

Kyle Christensen says “‘Dancing Shoes’ is the heaviest song we’ve written as a band so far, instrumentally and lyrically. This song reflects a lot on how cutthroat the world can be, and how so many people are out for themselves. I felt like I was losing touch with my own self confidence and let too many opinions get to me and my drive. As you grow older you realize how naive you can be to others and their ulterior motives.”

The Friday Five: 2016 Pop Punk Albums

2016 is off to a great start and with so much new music to look forward to, we’re breaking it down to our Friday Five pop punk albums (and EPs) that we’re stoked about!  We’ve got some oldies coming back for more, some newbies here to break new ground, and a genre that’s here to stay, saying “we’re more than just a phase, MOM!!!”

1. Good Charlotte: Untitled
Out: Spring 2016

Benji and Joel Madden are back with their original gang of misfits from Waldorf (worldwide) and are promising a new album filled with familiar sounds.  No word on an official release date yet but they’ve been reawakened by the pop punk forefathers are are working with John Feldman on this new record!

2. Simple Plan: Taking One For The Team
Out: Feb 19th, 2016

Pierre, Jeff, David, Chuck, and Seb never actually stopped making albums as Simple Plan, they just flew under the radar for a few years. Now that pop punk is having a revival of sorts, they’re here to show the newbies that you can branch out and have Nelly on a pop punk album with a video that looks like a 90s boyband throwback.

3. Waterparks: Cluster
Out: Jan 15th, 2015
Waterparks recently signed with Equal Vision Records and MDDN management but these guys are set to be the most promising breakout of 2016.  Their new EP “Cluster” is sure to be filled with infectious hooks, sing along choruses, and melodies that’ll have you craving for more! (see what we did there?)  We suggest you get on this bandwagon before it’s too late – these guys are gonna be HUGE!

4. The Starting Line – “Anyways”
Out: Feb 5th, 2016
The Starting Line have been teasing new music at their annual Holiday Show for a while now but the tail end of 2015 saw the release of their first new song in SEVEN YEARS!!!!  We may or may not have clutched our computers and cried while we listened to it (spoiler: we did.) “Anyways”, the EP comes out February 5th and you should get it because The Starting Line Rock (.com)!

5. SWMRS – “Drive North”
Out: February 12th, 2016
Formerly known as “Emily’s Army” and featuring Joey Armstrong (yes, Billie Joe’s son & spitting image), SWMRS are the epitome of the Bay Area music scene.  They match bubblegum power pop with grit of punk rock to churn out a fun perpetual summer sound all their own.  Catch them on their first headlining tour this Spring!  Get the dates here.
