Friday Five: St. Patrick’s Day Songs

It’s Friday and it’s St. Patrick’s Day which means time for an Irish themed Friday Five!   While we probably won’t be joining the NYC St. Patrick’s Day parade festivities, we’ll just sit here wearing our green, and quietly wish Disney was playing “Luck Of The Irish” on TV tonight.  We struggled to pick just five songs to put on this list but we let the 4 leaf  clovers to work their magic. Celebrate St. Patrick and bring out your Irish side with these tracks!

NKOTB – “Hanging Tough”
Helloooo!! NKOTB wrote this to be the Boston Celtics theme song and to be Irish, you gotta be hangin’ tough!  On tour, the New Kids sample Dropkick Murphys as well for the intro so double yes!

Flogging Molly – “Drunken Lullabies”
As far as Celtic influenced bands go, Flogging Molly is a tried and true classic.  If you’re looking for something to get yourself in the spirit of the holiday, these guys are top notch!

Dropkick Murphys – “Shipping Up To Boston”
Whether you realize this song is by Dropkick Murphys or not, you have heard this song and we’re pretty sure you love it as much as we do. NKOTB sample this for the “Hanging Tough” intro on tour, athletes use it as their walk up song, and in numerous commercials.  This is the officially unofficial theme song for the city of Boston, MA. We rest our case.

B*Witched – “C’est La Vie”
Arguably one of the most underrated artists from the late 90s and early 2000s, B*Witched are still touring.  Currently, they are on tour in Australia with Atomic Kitten and Liberty X.  We had a hard time picking between “Rollercoaster” and C’est La Vie” but  that’s just life and this is just a classic song!

House Of Pain – “Jump Around”
It’s Friday, and it’s a holiday.  Go ahead, jump around.  We won’t judge you!  Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

AJR Play 1st Sold Out Hometown Show At NYC’s Gramercy Theatre

AJR have been killing it lately.  Their latest single, “Weak,” has gotten over 100 million plays on Spotify and is climbing up the charts.   Their first major headlining tour, the “What Everyone’s Thinking” Tour, has had sold out shows across the country.  The tour rolled into Adam, Jack and Ryan’s hometown of NYC over the weekend for a two night stand at the Gramercy Theatre.

AJR have played Gramercy Theatre in the past, but their show on Saturday night was their first ever hometown show that sold out. And it didn’t just sell out – the show sold out so quickly that a second date was added on Sunday.   How successful has the “What Everyone’s Thinking” Tour been?  They were nearly out of their stock of merch, with a few shows left to go!

If you’ve been to an AJR show, you know that things can “get weird,” as Jack told the crowd.  For their first big headlining tour, they brought out all the stops.  They are by far one of the most energetic acts we’ve ever seen on stage.  They honed their skills performing on the streets of NYC, where they learned how to win over a crowd. Jack never stops moving, flailing across the entire stage in a continual dance as he switches from playing the Maschine to the drums to the Melodica to the guitar.   All three brothers took turns playing the drums, even hopping into the crowd at one point.

One of the things we love most about AJR is how true they stay to themselves and to their music.   After playing “Let The Games Begin,” the band told the crowd how the music industry had tried to change them and told them they couldn’t do things.   “You can’t get that sound on the radio.  You can’t record in your living room.”  Even Jack’s hat was met by criticism.  Through it all, they stood by what they believed in.  We saw quite a few fans (including a mini Jack) rocking “the hat” in the crowd.

We love that AJR are confident in their sound and their growing fanbase proves that you don’t have to fit into a certain mold to make good music and connect with people. When they wrote the songs for their latest EP, “What Everyone’s Thinking,” they wanted to make songs that were very honest and the reaction has been unbelievable.

Adam told the crowd more about their songwriting process – the brothers write countless songs together, then let them sit for a few months.  The ones they like that “pass the test of time” get the go ahead, while others get shelved.  One track that has stood the test of time, and that the band still loves to play live is “Infinity.”  They also did a new rendition of fan favorite track “Woody Allen,” turning it into an acoustic song with a heavy kick drum.   Ryan said he was inspired to write the song after watching Woody Allen movies for film class: he wanted to capture that feeling of how he always gets the girl in the end.

They incorporated some of their remixes in the set, turning “I Got No Strings” and “Tiptoe Through The Tulips” into tracks you wanted to dance to.  They also created a “New York” remix on stage, breaking it down piece by piece to show the crowd how they create their unique sound.

AJR closed out their set with their breakout single, “I’m Ready,” which had the entire room dancing and clapping along.   They rolled out a giant banner printed to look like Jack’s Maschine, which he started to play.   The band came back out for one more song, their current hit “Weak.”  We got chills hearing every person in the room singing along.

It was by far the craziest AJR show we’ve been to!  The enthusiastic crowd knew every word,  loudly singing along from start to finish.  It’s amazing to see how far they’ve come (they’ve been performing together for 12 years!) and to see such an incredible response to their music.  There’s no one else quite like them.  AJR,  you just keep doing you.

Indian Wells Brings The Heat
While we’re having a blizzard/icy mess in the Northeast, the tennis world is in blazing hot Indian Wells for the BNP Paribas Open, one of the best tournaments of the year.  We’d gladly take 97 degrees over this snow!   Although the best part of having a snowday is we get to watch the incredible matches on the schedule for today!  The tournament has been getting lots of buzz for the so called “quarter of death” that includes Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Juan Martin del Potro, Nick Kyrgios and more, who are all in action today.  We can’t wait for Zverev vs Kyrgios, Sock vs Dimitrov, Nadal vs Verdasco, Del Potro vs Djokovic..

Vasek Pospisil Shocks Andy Murray
Canadian Vasek Pospisil has had a rough year.  He dropped out of the top 100 in the rankings, and has had to play through Qualifying and Challengers to keep up.  Vasek made it through the qualifying draw in Indian Wells before facing Andy Murray in the 2nd round.  He ended up beating Murray, whom he had never taken a set off of, in 2 straight sets: 6-4, 7-6(7).  It was the biggest win of Vasek’s career so far and we hope it will help give him the confidence to go back to the high level we all know he’s capable of!  After all, Anything is Pospisil.

Friday Five: Simple Plan Songs From NPNHJB

You will always love the music that you liked when you were 13.  This is one of the most true statements we have ever heard! Simple Plan, as bizarre as it sounds, has had a profound effect on us…well one of us anyway.  They’re the reason we picked up the guitar, the reason we wore those huge khaki shorts with tall tube socks, Vans, and Role Model clothing.  Yeah….we were super fangirls for SP, complete with an email address dedicated to Seb’s eyes!  We won’t get into that now though.  Here is our Friday Five favorite deep cuts from the Canadian band’s debut album “No Pads, No Helmets, Just Balls” which they’re currently playing in full on the 15th Anniversary Tour!

“Meet You There”  – This is one of the  songs on an album full of angsty emo teen songs. No matter where life takes us, we’ll always meet Simple Plan there.

“My Alien” – It seems like every good pop punk band need a song about aliens, space, and/or  girlfriends. SP hit all three targets.  Thy went and got the Astronaut kit so if you can provide the rocket, they’ll be with their beloved 4 leg/2 armed girlfriend again.

“You Don’t Mean Anything” – When your two favorite singers collab on a single, that’s definitely going to be your favorite song! Joel Madden from Good Charlotte lent his vocals to the third track on SP’s debut album and we’re still surprised this was never a single.

“The Worst Day Ever”  – If you thought “I’m Just A Kid” was emo, this song takes the cake for being one of the most emo songs we have ever heard.

“One Day” – The acoustic picking in this song sounds out of place with the rest of the album if you’re not looking at the big picture of early 2000s music. SP really are masters at their craft because if you just heard this song with no context or name attached, chances are you might not realize it’s the same band that wrote “I’m Just A Kid.”  This is still one of our favorite emo deep cuts, hands down!

Abierto Mexicano Telcel – Sam Querrey

World Tennis Day Hits MSG
Madison Square Garden hosted the 10th Anniversary of the BNP Paribas Showdown last night, in celebration of World Tennis Day.  This year’s showdown featured Team Americas vs Team World, played in a modified World Team Tennis format.  Captain Andy Roddick led Team Americas, with Jack Sock, Venus Williams, and Juan Martin del Poetro.   Captain Lleyton Hewitt led Nick Kyrgios, Kei Nishikori, and Garbiñe Mugaruza for Team World.

The event featured 6 sets of Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Mixed Doubles, and Men’s Doubles, with each game counting toward the team’s overall score.   We loved the team format, especially as tennis is mostly an individual sport.  It was a fun night watching so many great competitors on court in a more relaxed setting.  There were trick shots, tweeners, and “ole, ole, ole, ole, Delpo, Delpo” cheers all night long.  In the end, Team World defeated Team Americas 29-24.

Sam Querrey Wins 9th Title in Acapulco
Sam Querrey just had one of the best weeks of his career.  He won his first ATP 500 level tournament in Acapulco in style, taking out 3 top-20 players on the way.  Sam was impressive all week, defeating David Goffin, Dominic Thiem, and Nick Kyrgios en route to the final against Rafael Nadal.   Sam defeated Rafa 6-3, 7-6(3), in a  It was Sam’s first victory over Rafa, and Rafa’s first career loss in Acapulco.  Acapulco has one of our favorite trophies of the year – and doesn’t Sam look so natural in that hat?

Brasil Open Features Ball Dogs
Ball kids are an important part of any tennis tournament – they couldn’t run without them.  The Brasil Open in São Paulo is the first to feature ball dogs!  The dogs, from 2 local non-profit shelters, chase down and retrieve balls from all over the court.  They also help promote local shelters and adoption.  We love this idea and would love to see more tournaments get involved!

Indian Wells Announces Wild Cards
Wild Cards were announced for the BNP Paribas Open, which kicks off this Wednesday in Indian Wells.  Bjorn Frantangelo, who nearly defeated Novak Djokovic in IW in 2016, received entry along with #NextGen Americans Frances Tiafoe, Taylor Fritz, Stefan Kozlov, and Reilly Opelka.   The draw will be announced at 3pm local time today.   Fingers crossed they don’t all end up playing each other in the first round!   Make sure you tune into to the tournament, which starts on Wednesday, March 8th on ESPN.

Andy Grammer Remixes “Fresh Eyes”

Andy Grammer might be looking at his girl with fresh eyes, but now thanks to Australian producer, Ryan Riback, we’re hearing the song with fresh ears as well!

Ryan is known for his infectious EDM dance floor ready sound and has worked with everyone from Maroon 5 to Fifth Harmony and now he’s adding some new fire to Andy’s hit single that’s sure to rise to the top of the charts once more.  “Fresh Eyes” is already certified platinum in multiple countries and double platinum in Australia!  Listen to the new remix below.

Be sure to grab a copy of the “Fresh Eyes” remix on iTunes and add it to your Spotify playlist, too!

Friday Five: New Artists To Watch

It’s been a while since we did a Friday Five but we’re bringing it back!! Each week, new music is released on Fridays and gets our weekend off to an awesome start. It’s hard to sift through all of the new tracks if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Sometimes we let the Youtube shuffle do it’s thing and lead us in new places we never ventured before. Other times we take cues from our current favorite bands and see who they’re playing shows with or what they’re listening to.  This week, let us help you find your new favorite artist to elevate your weekend to the next level!  Check out our Friday Five New Artists To Watch!

Chase Atlantic – “Into It”
Chase Atlantic just released their new video for “Into It” on Snapchat which is great because that’s where we spend most of our social media time anyway. Genius idea, awesome band, perfect song.

Citizen Four – “Testify”
They sing in 4 part harmony, have luscious hair, cool boy style, and they dance. What more do you want in a boy band?! Watch C4’s lyric video for “Testify” and you’ll be a fan before it’s over.

James Maslow – “How I Like It”
Okay, so he’s not “NEW” but as a solo artist he is brand new! James Maslow, from BTR, just released his first solo album and it’s SO GOOD SO GOOD!!  “How I Like It” is the first single and that’s how we like it.

Seaway – “Slam”
Whether you saw Seaway opening for Real Friends with Moose Blood or you’re catching them on the upcoming Simple Plan tour, these Canadians bring back everything we loved about late 90s/early 00s pop punk.  Every song from these guys gets us jumping and screaming “EVERYTHING IS COOL MAN!”

As It Is – “Hey Rachel”
Patty Walters poured his heart and soul into the latest As It Is record and his raw honesty on the song “Hey Rachel” is showing us that it’s okay to be well…just, Okay. Even when you don’t think you’re fine, you’ll always have your family to lean on.
