Tennis Tuesday: News Roundup

This Week’s Tournament:
Western & Southern Open – Cincinatti, OH

Between all the withdrawls and negativity surrounding the games, we weren’t that excited about tennis at the Olympics before it started.  But man, did this week prove us wrong!  The tennis games at the Olympics turned into a compelling and emotional week, starting with that epic match between Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro which feels like ages ago.

Men’s Singles
Gold: Andy Murray (GBR)
Silver: Juan Martin del Potro (ARG)
Bronze: Kei Nishikori (JPN)
It was just SO. GOOD.  to see Del Potro and Rafael Nadal (who finished 4th) playing well again.  SO.  GOOD.

Men’s Doubles
Gold: Rafael Nadal & Marc Lopez (ESP)
Silver: Florin Mergia & Horia Tecau (ROU)
Bronze: Stevie Johnson & Jack Sock (USA)
Impressive that Nadal, the flag bearer for Spain, wasn’t sure if he would even be able to play in every event on site.  He ended up making it to the semis in singles and won the gold with good friend Marc Lopez in doubles.

Mixed Doubles
Gold: Bethanie Mattek-Sands & Jack Sock (USA)
Silver: Venus Williams & Rajev Ram (USA)
Bronze: Lucie Hradecka & Radek Stepanek (CZE)
How awesome was it to see two American teams on the podium for the medal ceremony?  Also Jack Sock now has a Gold Medal and Bronze medal along with Wimbledon and US Open Doubles/Mixed titles.

Women’s Doubles
Gold: Ekaterina Makarova & Elena Vesnina (RUS)
Silver: Martina Hingis & Timea Bacsinszky (SUI)
Bronze: Lucie Safarova & Andrea Hlavackova (CZE)

Women’s Singles
Gold: Monica Puig (PUR)
Silver: Angelique Kerber (GER)
Bronze: Petra Kvitova (CZE)
Puig made history, winning Puerto Rico’s first ever gold medal, in ANY sport.  Great for the country and great for the sport!

Del Potro Upsets Novak Djokovic At The Olympics
Juan Martin del Potro, still making his comeback from another wrist surgery, defeated #1 Novak Djokovic in an emotional 1st round match at the Olympics.  By the end of the match, which Delpo won 7-6 (4), 7-6(2), he was crying, Djokovic was crying, WE WERE ALL CRYING.  Also, shout out to the Argentinian Men’s handball team for rescuing Delpo from an elevator before his match!

Nadal Makes His Olympic Comeback

Rafael Nadal finally got the chance to carry the flag for Spain in the Opening Ceremony, after being sidelined with injury in 2012.   Rafa is playing in the men’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles this year.  Vamos!

Nick Kyrgios Wins BB&T Open in Atlanta

After lots of drama with the Australian tennis federation as to whether or not he’d be able to play in the Olympics, Kyrgios decided to opt out of this year’s games.  Instead, Kyrgios made the most of his time by playing in the BB&T Open in Atlanta, defeating 3-time winner John Isner in the final.

John Isner Seeking 4th Atlanta Title
Isner is not playing in the Olympics in Rio this year.  Instead, Isner is in Atlanta as he attempts to win the BB&T Atlanta Open for the 4th year in a row.  An American has won the tournament every year since it launched in 2010.  Besides Isner, past winners also include Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish.  You can still put your USA!  USA!  chants to good use in Atlanta this week.

One More Reason To Get Into The Olympics

Just in case you’re up to your knees in snow like we are, here is a heartwarming story of one US Olympic Skier trying to adopt stray puppies in Russia!  Gus Kenworthy found these super cute pups wandering around Sochi and now he’s trying to adopt them and bring them back home to the US.

His official Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are full of photos of the puppies and even some breathtaking views from the top of the freestyle ski slopes. Check out some of the pictures below!

The Real Reason To Watch The Olympics

Now that the 2014 Winter Olympics are well underway in Sochi, Norway leads the pack with 12 medals over all!
But who watches the Olympics for the medal counts? We like to watch for the cute boys…and sometimes for the ridiculous team uniforms (Norway Curling Team.…we’re looking at you in your wacky albeit snazzy pants).

We picked a few of Olympians that we think are the hottest – even based on their horrific “official” mugshots. We don’t know who takes those or when but it looks like they put the athletes on a 32-hour flight from New York to Russia and snapped them as soon as they got off the plane.

Mark McMorris – The 20 year-old Canadian took the bronze medal in Men’s Slopestyle Snowboarding and then he took our hearts. We did a quick Google search and discovered just how cute this kid is!  Click HERE for his official Sochi profile, follow Mark on Twitter and don’t forget to “like” his Official Facebook!

Staale Sanbech – Not exactly our typical “hottie” but when he debuted his shocking new haircut on the podium for slopestyle snowboarding (Staale took silver) we were curious about the 20 year-old Norwegian. Check out Staale’s official Sochi profile, follow him on Twitter, Instagram, and his official Facebook! Honestly, we don’t know how this InstaVideo hasn’t gone viral yet.

Magnus Hovdal Moan – Another Norwegian athlete who we discovered via sifting through the Sochi official profiles, Magnus is married with two sons (boo!!) but that doesn’t make him any less attractive! We clicked around on his Instagram and Twitter and realized he is extremely good looking!!  Again, we have no clue when they photograph the Olympians but those official photos do not do some of them justice.

Some of the athletes don’t always tweet in English (that’s what Google Translate is for, right?) but they will most definitely fill your Twitter and Instagram feeds with some pretty faces!
Let us know who your favorite hottie athletes in the Olympics are in the comments.

Brush Up on Your Winter Sports Movies in Time for the Olympics!

The 2014 Winter Olympics from Sochi, Russia are just around the corner (seriously, they start tomorrow!) and with the sudden influx of snow in the city, if we aren’t in the park sledding and having snowball fights…we’re parked on the couch with hot chocolate (and tea) watching our favorite winter sports themed movies!

1. The Mighty Ducks Trilogy

This film franchise was the reason we dusted off our in-line skates in the summer, and made us want to join the hockey team in the winter. Starring Joshua Jackson as Charlie Conway and Emilio Estevez as Coach Gordon Bombay, and Kenan Thompson as Russ Tyler, The Mighty Ducks movies follow a rag-tag team of misfits navigating their way through peewee hockey, the Junior Goodwill Games, and eventually high school.  And let’s not forget the original Banksy aka Adam Banks, who reluctantly joined the team mid-season but eventually became a full-fledged Duck.  Quack Quack Quack!

2. Genius

Charlie Boyle is Chaz Anthony. Chaz Anthony is Charlie Boyle. They’re the same person. Except Charlie wears glasses and a lab coat while Chaz dons a leather jacket and spikey hair. Hannah Montana before there was Hannah Montana! Charlie is a science nerd trying to defy gravity (he’s in college and he isn’t even 14). When he starts to tutor a beautiful girl named Clair (played by Emmy Rossum) Charlie enrolls in the local high school, reinventing himself as a bad boy slacker – Chaz Anthony. The movie follows Charlie’s struggles of living a double life and how you can defy gravity while playing ice hockey!

3. Cool Runnings

“If enough people say they can believe, Jamaica, we got a bobsled team!” Cool Runnings is loosely based off the true story of the first Jamaican bobsled team made up of the fastest sprinters in Jamaica.  It’s also one of the most quotable movies of all time.  “Hey Sanka, what ya smoking?”  “I’m not smoking, I’m breathing!”   And it stars 90s icons such as Doug E. Doug and John Candy.
