The Friday Five: Australian Open Preview (Fangirl Style)

The Australian Open kicks off this weekend in Melbourne! ¬†It’s time for our annual bae-watch list. Here are some of the (many) players we’ll be rooting for for the next two weeks.

1. Borna Coric

Coric finished 2015 as the youngest player in the top 100. He is definitely one of the top young guns to watch in 2016 – he already has a win over Rafael Nadal, and played his first ATP World Tour final last week in Chennai. And is it just us or does anyone else get a little Jake Miller vibe from him?

2. Jack Sock

The young American has started 2016 with a bang, beating top players Kevin Anderson and David Ferrer en route to the finals in Auckland. Jack has a powerful, aggressive forehand and the game to match. But he’s also known for his great sportsmanship, suggesting his opponent Lleyton Hewitt challenge a call during Hopman Cup last week.

3. Pierre-Hugues Herbert (AKA P2Hugz)

P2Hugz is p2cute. He teamed up with fellow Frenchman Nicolas Mahut to win the US Open doubles trophy last Fall. The duo also made it to the finals of the 2015 Australian Open, so they will be confident playing on these familiar courts. Pierre-Hugues is also looking to qualify for the singles draw (ALLEZ!!!)

4. Taylor Fritz

Taylor is another young American player on a hot streak. Since winning the US Open Juniors title a few months ago, he has gone on to win 3 ATP Challenger titles and risen to 154 in the rankings. Fritz is also playing qualifying st this years tournament.

5. Benoit Paire

We’re not sure which Benoit will end up at this year’s tournament: the one who beat Nishikori at the US Open or the one who has on court meltdowns. But we can guarantee he’ll be entertaining to watch either way! We also suggest following him on Instagram for heart- eyes worthy photos.

BONUS: Lleyton Hewitt

The Australian Open is sadly Hewitt ‘s last tournament as a professional. We’ll be cheering Aussie Aussie Aussie OY OY OY until the last point. We expect him to go down fighting in some epic 5 set matches.

The Friday Five: US Open Preview (Fangirl Style)

As we’ve said before, tennis is the perfect sport for fangirls. ¬†And the US Open is finally here! ¬†After spending the rest of the year watching our score app¬†or trying to find a live stream, we finally get to see our favorite players up close and in person. ¬†So, in honor of the US Open kicking off on Monday, August 31st, here are our 5 players to watch.

1.Grigor Dimitrov
Grigor is one of the hottest young rising stars¬†in the sport. ¬†And if you’ve ever wondered what Grigor’s favorite Backstreet Boys’ song is, we suggest you watch this video. ¬†(also an ATP boyband? ¬†Yes please!)

2.Rafa Nadal
Thank you, Tommy Hilfiger.  Thank you.

3.Richard Gasquet
The Frenchman has by far the most beautiful backhand in the game, among other things. We’ll be cheering “ALLEZ!”

4.Mardy Fish
We’re thrilled to see Mardy back at the US Open this year, as he’s played some of our favorite matches ever at the tournament. ¬†Sadly Mardy will be retiring after this year’s US Open. ¬†We’ll never forget the crowd cheering “who lives in a pineapple under the sea?” ¬†“MARDYYY MARDDYYYY”

5.Pierre-Hugues Herbert
Or as well call him, “P2Hugz,” thanks to¬†his Twitter handle. ¬†The Frenchman was officially inducted to the French Davis Cup squad earlier this year, and¬†they made him sing.

American Authors To Headline 2015 US Open Arthur Ashe Kids Day

The official kickoff to the US Open is the annual Arthur Ashe Kids Day, a festival full of great music, tennis players, and fun activities on the grounds of the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. ¬†There’s nothing we love more than tennis and music, so naturally it’s one of our favorite events of the year! ¬†This year’s event, on August 29th, will feature headliners American Authors. Other musical guests include Bea Miller, Kalin & Myles, Jacob Whitesides, and Natalie La Rose. ¬†Tennis players include Novak Djokovic and 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, with more to be announced!

The Friday Five: Sexiest Men Alive

One of our favorite Thanksgiving traditions is the release of People’s Sexiest Man Alive issue. ¬†It’s the perfect reading material for your car/plane/train/bus ride home.¬† We can’t help but feel like this year’s list is a little bit lacking. ¬†Here’s who we would include if we could takeover People for a day.¬† (sidenote: if you haven’t seen the episode of “Don’t Trust The B” where James Van Der Beek receives the sexiest man honor, do yourself a favor and watch it now).

1. Sam Hunt
This up and coming country singer was recruited for the NFL but decided music was his true calling. ¬†And thank god because Sam Hunt’s deep voice and his thick Georgia drawl are part of his charm. ¬†He’s a talented singer and songwriter, with a unique sound incorporated his wide range of influences. ¬†Oh, and¬†his rapping skills are on point too. Grab a copy of Sam Hunt’s debut album “Montevallo” on iTunes or Amazon now so you can sing along on the “Lipstick Grafitti” Tour.

2. Austin Mahone
The one man boyband is basically all of your favorite boyband members in one. ¬†He’s currently in the studio working with Max Martin on his debut full length album. ¬†We’re hoping it will capture more of that 90s pop sound we heard on “The Secret” EP. ¬† Since Martin is responsible for “I Want It That Way,” ¬†“Baby One More Time, and “It’s Gonna Be Me,” among countless others, we’re sure it will. ¬† Make sure to pickup a copy of the new Teen Vogue¬†for some beautiful wall-worthy photos.

3. Jake Miller
Florida born singer/rapper Jake Miller definitely qualifies as “sexy” – have you seen his muscles?¬† Any guy who can make a goofy face and still look good is definitely a keeper!¬† Jake is also very good about interacting with his fans on Twitter.¬† Be sure to pick up a copy of Jake Miller’s new EP “Lion Heart” on iTunes or Amazon now!

4. Grigor Dimitrov
HEART EYES EMOJI  all day because not only is Grigor one of the hottest young tennis stars (just look at that backhand!), he also is very sweet to his fans Рhe even stopped a match to help a ball girl who fainted (probably at the sight of him). Grigor also appreciates the finer things in art like art, custom designer travel bags, and puppies!!  Make sure to follow him on Instagram.

5. Ryan Lewis
Ryan Lewis is just a beautiful man. ¬†Not only is he a talented producer/DJ, he’s also been using his popularity for a good cause and launched the charity¬†The 30/30 Project¬†to help aid those impacted by HIV/AIDs. ¬†Lewis is definitely the lesser known member of the Grammy winning duo (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis if you’re totally clueless), as spoofed on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. ¬†That definitely would not have been our reaction to spotting Ryan Lewis in¬†the park.

Austin Mahone Mets Post-Game Concert 9/27

The New York Mets couldn’t have picked a better night for the final show of their concert series.¬† It was a perfect late September night that kicked off with hundreds of young dance and cheer squads from the tri-state area doing a fun routine to songs by Demi Lovato and Ariana Grande.¬† Dance Cheer Night meant there were significantly more teenage girls than usual in the stadium – oh, and the fact that Austin Mahone was performing after the game!¬† Between the cheerleaders and the fangirls in attendance, it’s safe to say that it was one of the loudest crowds Citi Field has ever seen (especially whenever Austin Mahone showed up on the big screen).

P1010768 copyAfter the game (which the Mets ended up winning 2-1 in the 9th!), a stage was quickly rolled out behind 2nd base for the concert, which started just after 10:30pm.¬†¬† Austin performed a 12-song set, including an acoustic section that showcased his vocals and guitar playing.¬†¬† And we all know he can dance!¬†¬† The one man boy band showed off his smooth choreography to hits like “Banga Banga” and his latest, “Secret,” which sounds like a 2014 update of a 90s Backstreet Boys song (and is the Secret Fangirls theme song).¬† Austin even invited 1 lucky fan on stage to serenade during “U.”¬†¬† We always knew he was a great dancer, but this was the first time we got to see his choreography up close, and we were majorly impressed.

1. “Banga Banga”
2. “Say You’re Just A Friend”
3. “Shawty Shawty”
4. “Shadow”
5. “Human Nature”
6. “All Of Me”
7. “Secret”
8. “Till I Find You”
9. “U”
10. “All I Ever Need”
11. “What About Love”
12. “MMM Yeah”P1010067 copy

We can’t wait to see who the Mets will have in the lineup for the 2015 concert series!¬†¬† Besides Austin, recent shows have included Boyz II Men and Third Eye Blind.¬† It’s a fun way to see your favorite artist, and to spend a perfect summer evening with some baseball, music and BBQ (or Shake Shack, or a burger‚Ķthe food options at Citi Field are endless).

Hockey for Fangirls…A Mighty Ducks Sequel in the Works?

Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs are tonight at Madison Square Garden!¬† While tennis is generally the only sport we watch (it is the ultimate fangirl sport), we have been known to tune into a hockey game now and then.¬† Especially when our home team, the New York Rangers, is playing a must-win game against the Los Angeles Kings.¬†¬† As casual hockey viewers, we like to break things down into terms we can understand.¬† And as 90s fangirls, this means “The Mighty Ducks” trilogy. ¬†Especially now we hear that there are talks of making a Mighty Ducks 4! ¬†(Check out this amazing¬†Oral History of “The Mighty Ducks” Trilogy¬†on Time.com!)

D3-The-Mighty-Ducks-DI-DI-to-L8
Unfortunately, none of the players are as adorable as Team Captain Charlie Conway or Adam Banks, AKA the original Bansky.¬† And you generally won’t see many closeups of Coach Gordon Bombay, stressed out and cheering the team on from the bench.¬† You also won’t be seeing Julie the Cat Gaffney or Connie on either team – men only in the pros!¬† Most goalies, like Goldberg, will fall down.¬† A lot.¬† Don’t be afraid to sub in a new goalie – it just might win you the tournament!

We have some advice for the Rangers:¬† Try a flying V!¬†¬† It works every time.¬† And if you’re in trouble, you can always call in Randy, AKA Kenan Thompson, to hit one of his infamous knuckle pucks!

Just whatever you do, don’t mess with Iceland, they play dirty. (The Kings even have a player with the last name Stoll – look out for him)¬†¬† Learn from the Bash brothers – it may seem like a great idea to knock out anyone that gets in your way, but that will land you time in the penalty box.

And Remember:  Ducks Fly Together!

Maybe a little “We Will Quack You” will pump up the team?

Watch the Stanley Cup playoffs between the New York Rangers & the Los Angeles Kings tonight on NBC at 8pm EST!   Or you can just rewatch The Mighty Ducks trilogy on Netflix.
