AJR Kicks off Spring Tour with Headlining Show at Gramercy Theatre

Our favorite band of brothers, AJR, kicked off their spring tour with a headlining show at NYC’s Gramercy Theatre on Saturday, March 15th.  It’s hard to believe this was only the band’s second headlining show, ever.  They played a solid 1-hour set, including a brand new song and some covers that seriously showed off their vocal ranges.

We were first introduced to AJR (brothers Adam, Jack and Ryan Met) at CMJ back in October, when they played a showcase at the Gramercy along with artists like Diane Birch.  At the time, there were maybe 30 people in the audience.  It’s amazing to see how far they’ve come in just a few short months!

The near-capacity crowd at Gramercy was dancing and singing along to every song, even tracks like “The Green and the Town” and “Married on a Hill,” which haven’t even been officially released by the band.  The show also marked the first performance of a new song, “Alice By The Hudson,” which AJR described as “the perfect summer song.”  We totally agree, and love the Beach Boys-influence you can hear in this song.   They also played favorites off their debut EP, 6foot1, like the ukelele-driven “Growing Old on Bleecker Street” and “After Hours,” which was so much fun to hear live.  They followed it up with a cover of Bastille’s “Pompeii” that (as with all of their covers) makes it impossible to go back to the original version because they just do it better!

They even brought back a song from the AJR archives, “3AM,” which was a nice addition to the set and for fans who had been around since they first started adding videos to YouTube a couple of years ago.

As if we weren’t impressed enough already, for their encore AJR sat down on the edge of the stage and beckoned their fans closer.  Without microphones, they did a cover of “Wagon Wheel,” which we could hear perfectly from the back.  It seemed like a fitting tribute to their days busking in Washington Square Park.  They ended the show with their single “I’m Ready,” which had the whole crowd dancing and clapping along.

Having seen them before, we were expecting an incredible show, but we were seriously impressed with this show and how much they’ve stepped up their game.  They have a few more dates coming up this Spring, and trust us, you do not want to miss this!  At this rate they’ll be selling out arenas this time next year.  We’re so excited to see what’s in store for this talented trio! Even more remarkable, AJR are a completely independent, DIY project – they write, produce and record songs in their parents’ living room in NYC and have full creative control.  As they say, No Label.  Just Fans.

The Fangirl Handbook #1: Concert Etiquette

We’ve been to a lot of concerts over the years, everywhere from CBGBs (RIP) to Madison Square Garden and everything in between.   So when it comes to concert behavior, we’ve experienced it all, good and bad.

Here are some simple rules to keep in mind at your next show.

1.  There are people behind you!  This is not the time to break out your finest top hat.  Also, please don’t put anyone on your shoulders, especially if you’re already 6+ feet.  And while we love and encourage dancing, please try not to jump back onto the people behind you.

Fan Girl hand book NO TOP HATS         fan girl handbook NO kids on shoulders

2. There is a time and place for screaming.  If the artist is introducing a meaningful ballad, try to keep the “I LOVE YOUUU!” in for just a little bit longer and you’ll be fine.   If you’re waiting in line to see the band, and you get that first up close glimpse of them, we know it’s exciting but please don’t scream.  You’re simultaneously scaring the band and taking up someone else’s brief time with them.

3.  If it’s an arena show, try your best to arrive before the main artist takes the stage.  There is nothing more annoying than having to wait for someone to shuffle by and locate their seats (and they can never find them) blocking your view while you miss your favorite song.

4. Put the phone away.  Of course, take a few photos and videos, but if you are sitting there texting the entire time, why are you there in the first place?  You can do that at home – for free!  And isn’t it nice to experience things in real life once and a while, rather than through a screen?

5.  Personal space.  You aren’t the only person in the room.

6.  No smoking of ANY kind.  This shouldn’t even have to be said, but you’d be surprised.

7.  Mind your beverages.  Try to keep them in your hand, and off of my purse/coat/new shoes/merch I just bought/head/etc.

8.  Standing is totally fine, IF you are in your own seat.  Do not stand in the stairway.  Do not stand on the barricade at the end of the stairway.  Do not stand on your chair. 99.9% of the time, you will be blocking the view of someone who actually paid for a seat in that section.  Also, if you can’t see because you’re seated and someone in front of you is standing, don’t get mad and rudely shout at the other person to sit.  Stand up!  It’s a concert, you should be dancing!

9.  Posters should only be used between songs, or held up for brief moments.  Again, just keep in mind your giant poster board is guaranteed to be blocking the views of everyone behind you.  Easy rule to follow?  If the band is singing, don’t put the sign up.  Wait for between songs.

10. Do not throw things on stage.  Ever.  This is why we can’t have nice things, like bottle caps at concerts.

11. If you are just arriving to a GA show seconds before showtime, no one believes that your “friend” is holding your spot in the front row.  Most likely everyone in the front has already been there for hours (even days), respect that, and don’t violently force and push your way through the crowd.  Want to be in the front?  You’ve got to put in the time.

Now if we could just get everyone to follow these simple guidelines, we can all enjoy the show!  (Don’t even get us started on tennis watching etiquette…)

Stay tuned for part 2 of our Fangirl Handbook:  How to Meet the Band

Backstreet Boys Announce Summer 2014 North American Tour on GMA

We’re so glad we made the switch from The Today Show to Good Morning America recently – GMA seems to get all of the important fangirl announcements.  Like this morning, when Backstreet Boys revealed they will be heading back out on a North American tour this summer!   We were getting majorly concerned that it was already March and we had no boyband tours to look forward to this year (We even made a list of forgotten bands who could reunite) so we are so excited that Backstreet’s Back in 2014!  This will be their second North American tour since Kevin Richardson rejoined the group last year, just in time for BSB’s 20th Anniversary.   Avril Lavigne will be joining the tour as well, so get ready for a night of early 2000s nostalgia.

Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday, March 21st 2014 at 10am local time.  Be sure to visit BackstreetBoys.com for info about fan club pre-sales, VIP packages, upgrades and after parties!

Austin Mahone Premieres “MMM Yeah” Music Video

Fresh off his first headlining tour, Austin Mahone premiered the music video for his latest single “MMM Yeah,” featuring Pitbull.  We’re a little bummed that there is less choreography than usual (because the kid can DANCE!) but it’s a great video nonetheless.  Check it out below!

And does the video set remind anyone else of *NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye?”  Or is that just our uncanny ability to relate anything to *NSYNC?   We’re calling it another Mahone boy band throwback either way.  Keep it up!

Be sure to follow Austin on Twitter and Facebook for more updates.  And follow *NSYNC and Secret Fangirls while you’re at it!

Join the Hunter Hayes 24-Hour Road Race To End Child Hunger

Just a day after Hunter Hayes revealed the May 6th release date for his new album, “Storyline,” he announced he’ll be having a 24-hour concert marathon to celebrate!

The 24-Hour Road Race appropriately kicks off with an appearance on Good Morning America, and wraps up in Philadelphia the next morning.
