Tennis Tuesday: News Roundup

This Week’s Tournaments:
Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters – Monte Carlo, Monaco

Last Week’s Winners:
US Men’s Clay Court Championship – Stevie Johnson
Grand Prix Hassan II – Borna Coric

Borna Coric Wins 1st ATP World Tour Title in Marrakech
20-year old Borna Coric won his first ATP Tour Title at the Grand Prix Hassan II in Marrakech!  Borna had an incredible comeback in the final against Phillip Kohlschreiber, saving 5 match points in the 2nd set and coming back from 0-3 down in the 3rd.  This was Borna’s second final in Marrakech, and his third final overall.   The win puts Borna back in the top 50 of the rankings and up to #2 in the #NextGen race to Milan, just behind Sascha Zverev.  Borna had knee surgery late last Fall after being forced to withdraw from his match at the US Open.  We’re glad to see him back on court and playing well!

Monte Carlo = The Most Beautiful Tournament of the Year
Forget Wimbledon.  The tournament in Monte Carlo is at the top of our tennis tournament bucket list.  The Monte Carlo Country Club hosts the tournament, and center court is surrounded by view of the mountains and sea.  Tune in to Tennis Channel all week for some spectacular views and tennis!

Rafael Nadal Going for Perfect 10
Rafa, the undisputed King of Clay, has already won a record breaking 9 titles in Monte Carlo, Barcelona, and Roland Garros.  He is the only player in the open era to have won a tournament at least 9 times.  Could he go even further and make it a perfect 10?

Stevie Johnson Wins 2nd Title in Houston
After a rough start to 2016, Stevie Johnson has been on a roll since last year’s grass court season.  He picked up his first ATP World Tour Title in Nottingham, made the 4th round of a slam for the first time, and picked up a bronze medal at the Olympics.  Stevie worked hard in the off season, shedding nearly 20 pounds, and it’s shown!   He won the 2nd title of his career, and his 1st on clay, at the Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston.  Stevie took out Jack Sock in the semifinals before defeating Thomaz Bellucci in the finals.   And as is the tradition at the tournament, Stevie celebrated the victory by jumping into the pool at the River Oaks country club!

Tennis Tuesday: Monte Carlo Roundup

Tennis players are always chasing the sun and now that the weather is getting nicer in NYC, we can’t wait to play outside this Summer! It’s been a busy week in the tennis world so let’s get right to our Tennis Tuesday round up.

This Week’s Tournaments:
Barcelona Open BancSabadell – Barcelona, Spain
BRD Nastase Tiriac Trophy – Bucharest, Romania

Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut Win Monte Carlo
The French duo won their 3rd straight Masters 1000 title of the season, securing themselves the #1 ranking in doubles in the process.  We love watching these two play and are thrilled to see them playing so well.  Also, see below one of the cutest post-match photos ever taken.

Rafael Nadal Reclaims Monte Carlo Title
The King of Monte Carlo won the title for the 9th time, defeating Dominic Thiem, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray on the way to the finals.  The final between Rafa and Gael Monfils was one of the best matches of the year so far.  We hope both of them can carry the momentum to Roland Garros!

World Team Tennis Schedule Announced
The WTT schedule was announced last week, including matches with marquee players Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, and Caroline Wozniacki.  We can’t wait to catch the New York Empires at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, including a match with both Andy and March August 9th!  Check out the full schedule at WTT.com.  Check with your local team as tickets go on sale this week!  And remember…Don’t fall asleep on a plane with Andy Roddick or Mardy Fish.

The Friday Five: Adventures in Europe

It’s totally possible to have an adventure through Europe without even leaving your couch.  Here are some of our favorite movies that will take you to Rome, Paris & beyond.

1. The Lizzie McGuire Movie
Ah, Rome.  The Eternal City.  The land where they invented spaghetti. Whatever you want to call it, this movie is like taking a tour through the city.  And no trip to Rome is complete without running into an Italian pop star who wants you to pose as his singing parter who’s like totally your twin and perform at the IMVAs so you don’t loose your record deal, right?

2. Monte Carlo
Sure, it’s basically the same plot as The Lizzie McGuire Movie.  But this one takes place in Paris, and of course Monte Carlo.  And stars Selena Gomez, Katie Cassidy, Leighton Meester, and some really well cast male leads.  Beau-jo-lais, y’all.

3. The Cheetah Girls 2
Sometimes you gotta strut down those streets and let Barcelona know the Cheetahs have arrived.  The Cheetah Girls travel to Spain to compete in a talent show, almost get disqualified, meet some cute boys, and end up having a Cheetah-licious summer!

4. Chasing Liberty
Mandy Moore goes everywhere from Prague to Venice and back with Matthew Goode.  Sure she may be on the run from her secret service body guards, but a romantic gondola ride never hurt anybody!

5. What A Girl Wants
Amanda Bynes goes to London to find her father, Colin Firth and meets a cute British boy, who also happens to be a musician.  Believe it or not, no Christina Aguilera songs are in this movie, despite the title.  (Didn’t you just read the title to the tune of “What A Girl Wants?”  Us too.)
