Artist To Watch: The YRS

The YRS, pronounced “The Years” are an R&B boyband in the most pure sense of the word consisting of 5 guys based in Atlanta, GA (where the peaches grow and the girls speak real slow!)  Dom, Taylor, Jay, Kyle, and Nate are ready to bring their sweet harmonies and perfectly choreographed moves to a city near you!  We caught The YRS when they opened for Austin Mahone in New York at Wester Hall but these guys are already setting their sights of playing much bigger venues on their own very soon.

The YRS not only won us over with their hypnotic dance moves but each guy has a voice as smooth as honey and when you blend all 5 voices together, the harmonies are heaven sent. Dom, Taylor, Kyle, Jay, and Nate got to sing for the legendary Bobby Brown who not only gave them his seal of approval, he joined in!

The guys definitely know how to put on a show because we’re pretty sure every single person who caught them opening for Austin Mahone is now a fan.

They also love spending time with their fans after the show, going live on Instagram, and even invited some lucky fans to film a short video for their new song “Party All The Time” on their bus in New York!

Stay tuned for more from The YRS because these guys are just getting started.  Look out for their first official single “Party All The Time” to be released very soon on Cash Money Records!

Tennis Tuesday: News Roundup

This Week’s Tournament:
Miami Open – Miami, FL USA

Last Week’s Winner:
BNP Paribas Open – Roger Federer

Introducing the (One-Handed) Backhand Boys
Roger Federer may have won the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells over the weekend, but he also won the internet and the hearts of fangirls around the world with the return of the Backhand Boys.  Federer joined fellow one-handed backhanders Grigor Dimitrov and Tommy Haas for a singalong of Chicago’s “Hard to Say I’m Sorry.”  You might recall the trio singing  together back at the Australian Open, and this new video shows they’ve been working on their moves and their vocals.  Tour soon?

As much as we love the Backhand Boys, we think they could use a couple of extra members to make up the classic 5 member boyband!   We’d love to see Stan Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem, Richard Gasquet or Feliciano Lopez join the lineup.  Auditions in Miami?

The Backhand Boys could use a rival boyband just to keep things fresh.  May we present *NSYDE OUT led by some of the best forehands on the ATP Tour: Juan Martin del Potro, Jack Sock, and Rafael Nadal with Vasek Pospisil (he so needs/wants to be in a boyband) and Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Denis Shapovalov Wins 1st Challenger Title
#NextGenATP player Denis Shapovalov won his first challenger title over the weekend in his native Canada at the Challenger Banque Nationale Drummondville.  At 17-years-old, Denis is the youngest ATP Challenger winner so far this year and now the youngest player in the top 200.  Denis defeated his friend and countryman Felix Auger-Aliassme in the semi-finals en route to the title.

Gael Monfils Out With Injury
Gael Monfils is one of the most entertaining players in tennis, with an explosive game and incredible athleticism.   Unfortunately, his big game has led to quite a few injuries over the years, and Gael’s latest setback is a tear in his Achilles’ heel and chondropathy Patella.  He is out of the Miami Open and will start rehab.  We hope to see Gael back on court soon!  (so we can see more shots like this)

ATP University Class of 2017 Graduate in Miami
Every year in Miami, the ATP World Tour hosts “ATP University” for the youngest players on tour.  The 3-day program teaches the players about life on tour including player relations, social media, nutrition, and finance.  It also gives the new players a chance to get to know each other and adjust to their hectic new schedule.  This year’s class included young Americans Reilly Opelka, Noah Rubin, Michael Mmoh, and Stefan Kozlov.

Roger Federer Covers GQ‘s April Issue
Things can be rough for a tennis fan in the off-season.  It’s hard to fill the time normally spent with following scores and matches across the globe with some non-tennis related activities.  Which is how back in December, with no brackets to fill out, tennis fans made it their priority to vote Roger Federer as the Best Dressed Man in GQ‘s Most Stylish Man poll.   Federer won the poll in a landslide, taking out Kanye West, Ryan Gosling, and more in the process.  With his new honor, Federer is on the cover of GQ‘s April issue.  Read the story here!

NKOTB Announce The Total Package Tour with Paula Abdul & Boyz II Men

It’s a known fact among fangirls that NKOTB are notoriously bad at keeping secrets.  Last week when they teased a huge announcement was going to be made on the TODAY show, it took Blockheads about 5 minutes to figure it out.  But if there is anyone worse at keeping a secret, it’s Paula Abdul.  After finishing her set at the Mixtape Festival over the Summer, she quickly told the crowd “I’m going on tour with NKOTB & Boyz II Men next year bye!”  Which left us with so many questions for Paula.  When does it start?  What venues?  When do pre-sales start?

Luckily for us, that day has come!  On the TODAY show this morning, NKOTB officially announced the “Total Package Tour” with Boyz II Men and Paula Abdul will kick off in May in Columbus, OH!   Tickets go on sale to the public on Saturday, November 19th.  Pre-sales for Blockhead members and Amex cardholders start TOMORROW, Wednesday, November 16th.

NKOTB are the absolute best at giving you all the on-sale info you could ever need.  Head over to NKOTB.com for all the info on pre-sales, VIP packages, and more.  There is even a very detailed plan of the stage to help plan your ticket buying!  And if you struggle with figuring out what “local venue time” means, they have a handy time zone converter.  (Dear NKOTB team, please teach other artists how to do on-sales, thank you.)

The tour is hitting major arenas across the US, along with stops at Fenway Park (which should be another epic show) and Hollywood Bowl.  This is Paula Abdul’s first tour in over 25 years.  She CRUSHED IT at Mixtape Festival!  And NKOTB and Boyz II Men always BRING IT each and every night.  This is one tour you do not want to miss.  Check out all of the tour dates below!

NKOTB To Headline Mixtape Festival 2016

If you (like us) have been going through NKOTB withdrawl every day since your last show (of 3) of The Main Event Tour, you’re in luck!  NKOTB announced they are coming back to Mixtape Festival in 2016!   This will be their only concert in 2016 as they have no plans to tour this year.  (Which only means we can’t wait to see what they have in store for 2017!)   Mixtape Festival is a blast – the fest is at the beautiful Hersheypark Stadium in Hershey, PA – and features all of your favorite 90s artists.  This year’s performers include Boyz II Men, 98 Degrees, O-Town & more!  It will also mark Paula Abdul’s return to the stage.

Pre-sales for Block Nation members start this Saturday, April 23rd at 10am!  As a BN member, you’ll also have access to a special pre-show, members only event on August 5th.  For FREE!  Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, April 29th at 10am.  VIP packages will also be available, including meet and greets and after party access.  Head over to MixtapeFestival.com for all the info!

The Friday Five: Boyband Solo Projects

Nick Carter’s “All American” Tour is stopping in NYC this weekend, and obviously we’ll be there fangirling out.   As much as we love boybands, it’s also fun when they team up or go solo for other projects.  As long as they come back together (DO YOU HEAR US JT?)  Here are some of our favorite solo projects and duets from boyband members.  Basically, Jordan Knight should just team up with everyone.

1.Jordan Knight ft. Donnie Wahlberg – “Stingy”

2. Joey McIntyre – “I Love You Came Too Late”

3. Nick + Knight – “Paper”

4. Jordan Knight – “Give It To You”

5. Nick Carter – “19 in 99”

The Friday Five: Boyband Draft

It’s boyband week over at Billboard.com, AKA the greatest thing ever.  Every week should be boyband week.  In honor of the occasion, Billboard staffers held a fantasy boyband draft, assembling their dream teams.  For this week’s Friday Five, we decided to get in on the fun and do our own boyband draft and create 2 super boybands: J5 and *Big Time Boys on the Block°.  The only rules were that you can’t pick 2 members from the same band.  Check out our picks and vote for your favorite!

Team A: J5 (JC, Joey, James, Jeff and Jesse)

JC Chasez
One of the greatest male vocalists, ever.  He can still hit ALL the notes, and he hasn’t aged a day since “Bye Bye Bye.”

Joey McIntyre
Just watch this performance from The Main Event Tour, and you’ll know why Joey is the MVP of any boyband.  Those vocals.  Those moves.  Those abs.

James Maslow
We knew James was a national treasure during Big Time Rush’s run, but he further proved it in his run to the final 3 of “Dancing With The Stars.”   Enjoy.

Jeff Timmons
Jeff has had the most uh, interesting post-boyband career.  He brings the moves for sure.  Fun fact we somehow just discovered: He was part of a “man band” on VH1 called “Sureshot” with Chris Kirkpatrick, Rich Cronin and Bryan Abrams in 2007.

Jesse McCartney
The most underrated former boyband member (Dreamstreet!).  His last single, “Punch Drunk Recreation,” and the accompanying video (where J Mac basically leads his own boyband) have not gotten nearly enough love.

Team B: *Big Time Boys on the Block°

Nick Carter
Nick has had his struggles in the past but he overcame them and continues to BRING IT every night on stage giving 110% during every show.  He also likes to make up his own moves on stage which is always A+ in my book.

Donnie Wahlberg
Do you watch NKOTV every week on A&E?  NO??  You should.  It’s the greatest night for television and you’ll see why Donnie Wahlberg is my top pick for boyband.  He knows how to treat the fans, he’s great to his wife (secret fangirl: Jenny McCarthy) and his family.  Plus – watch this video for further proof of A+ boybanding.

Nick Lachey
Another former boyband member who has a TV show about his own restaurant (“Raising The Bar” on A&E every Wednesday night.)  Let’s face it, Nick Lachey was the best looking member of 98* and he’s been the most successful – aside from Jeff Timmons’ stripper revue.

Kendall Schmidt
Kendall has seamlessly transitioned into boyband member to acoustic singer-songwriter while not alienating any fans from either end of the spectrum.  He’s got a good voice, and whether he wants to admit it or not – this boy can DANCE!  Plus, he’s got great hair.

Joey Fatone
He appeared on Hannah Montana, dancing with the stars, various food critic reality shows, and he’s still the most underrated member of *N SYNC.  Let’s not forget that Joey was also in “On The Line” with Lance.

The Friday Five: *NSYNC Videos

It’s tearing up our hearts that an *NSYNC reunion hasn’t happened yet.  But we are never giving up hope.  Especially since the band members are all still friends – Lance revealed on Watch What Happens Live that the guys have a group text and talk almost every day. (!!!!)  Last night, E! aired a special on Lance Bass’ wedding to Michael Turchin.  It was a beautiful ceremony, and a historic moment, and we’re so glad that Lance and Michael shared with us all.  Oh, and how amazing was it seeing Joey and JC?  (Chris was there too but we only caught a brief glimpse of him)  We’re still fangirling over JC’s role as the “wedding singer.”  He hasn’t aged a day (sorry Justin, but he was always our fave), and it reminded us just how much we need to see JC, and the rest of the guys, on stage again.

So while we wait for that reunion tour announcement (seriously, the amount we would be willing to pay for tickets to that tour increases daily), watch our favorite *NSYNC videos and try not to drive yourself crazy wanting them back.

1. “I Drive Myself Crazy”
We used to re-enact this video, which we had recorded on a VHS tape.  So many great moments:  Lance and his flowers.  Justin’s hair.  JC’s eyes (swoon)

2. “Bye Bye Bye”
We voted for this video on TRL EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.   If you claim to not know the “Bye Bye Bye” dance, you are lying.

3. “Pop”
All that matters is that you recognize that’s it’s just about RESPECT!

4. “It’s Gonna Be Me”
The video that launched the signature “lean and pop” move (now replicated by the one-man boyband Austin Mahone)

5. “I Want You Back”
We prefer the European version of the video, which takes place in space, and has the guys in tight tops and baggy waggy pants.

BONUS: “U Drive Me Crazy”
Another European video.  Just watch it, we can’t even explain.

The Friday Five: The Main Event Playlist

In case you haven’t noticed, we are insanely excited about The Main Event Tour happening this summer.   NKOTB, TLC, and Nelly performing together on one stage?  It’s guaranteed to be a nonstop party.   Not sure about you, but we’ll be attending at least two shows.  Check out all of the tour dates HERE!  Here are some of the songs we can’t wait to hear this summer!

1. NKOTB – “Block Party”
The ultimate opening song, and NKOTB says it best:  “Leave your troubles all behind only good times here tonight.”  We still know all the choreography from The Package Tour.

2. TLC – “No Scrubs”
One of our favorite songs of the late 90s – we can’t wait for an arena-wide singalong.

3. Nelly – “Hot In Herre”
We’re imagining some sort of onstage collab between NKOTB & Nelly for this song, especially since NKOTB have done some “Dirty Dancing” to this song in the past.

4. NKOTB – “Cover Girl”
If you’ve seen NKOTB on tour before, then you might also know this song as “that song when Donnie rips off his tank top.”

5. TLC – Waterfalls
Throwing it way back to the days when we had to record songs off of the radio to cassette tapes on our boom boxes so we could listen on our Walkmen.  (Kids, if you have no idea what we’re taking about, watch this.  You have no idea how easy you have it now)

The Friday Five: Have A Boyband Christmas

‘Tis the season for boys in matching chunky turtlenecks and festive headwear!  If you’re searching for the perfect Holiday music to add to your playlist (or any playlist), you can’t go wrong with some classic boyband songs.

1. 98 Degrees – “This Gift”
Is it okay if we say this is our favorite 98 Degrees album?  (Sorry, “Microphone.”)

2. *NSYNC – “Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays”
The most iconic Christmas music video of all time.

3. NKOTB – “Funky Funky Xmas”
They performed this on the Arsenio Hall Show in 1990, and Jordan decided his Christmas gift to you would be to take his shirt off mid-performance.

4. Big Time Rush – “Beautiful Christmas”
Confession: we will listen to this song year round if it shuffles on our BTR playlist.

5. Backstreet Boys – “It’s Christmas Time Again”
BSB somehow managed to avoid releasing a full Christmas album (although we would love that guys, get on it).  They did release this single in in 2012.
